The University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), which was the original name of the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai (ICT Mumbai), was established in 1933 and has since grown with the aid of numerous businesses and benefactors. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council and National Accreditation Board awarded the institute, commonly known as ICT Mumbai, a grade of "A++" accreditation in 2017. The Ministry of Human Resource Development's ICT status changed from Independent Institute to Deemed University in 2008.

Each program's admissions procedure at ICT Mumbai is organized differently from the others. The application form is available to students, who must complete it online on the official website. Students applying to undergraduate programs are judged and shortlisted based on their grades in the JEE Main or MHT CET evaluations.

The Institute's written exam, the Institute's Merit List, and the candidates' GATE/GPAT rankings are used to evaluate and shortlist applicants for PG programs. A written entrance exam and an interview round administered by the Institute are used to evaluate and narrow down the pool of candidates for the Ph.D. program. This institute offers a wide range of programs at various levels, including undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees.
