Had her head not been on his shoulder, he would have given her quite look. He knew he was a sentimental old fool, but he wasn't an idiot. Even if the contact did...well, it didn't feel nice, necessarily, but it was reassuring that maybe things truly were getting better. Not that much better, though. "No," he answered. "You still need to be under my supervision. You'll get it back when we're done with all of this."
Her next question brought a sigh, and it made him...sad. The circumstances were different, of course, and he didn't enjoy locking her up like this, but he was locking her up. There was no way around that fact. "You know why things are the way they are," he said, eyes watching her as she traced the controls.
"This is why I prefer my vortex manipulator," Missy hummed, dropping her head to rest on his shoulder. He provided a constant and she smiled slightly as she let out a deep breath. "Can I get that back by the way? You know, now that you trust me to be let out."
She reached out and trailed her fingers along the controls, thinking back over what the Doctor had said.
"So it's just me you keep locked up then?"

He watched her as she moved, eyes switching between her and the console as he moved, as he set them to a planet he remembered, a planet covered in rainforests. He was sure she would like it. It covered her bases, and it was pleasant.
"My...?" It took him a beat to realize what she was talking about. Oh. "No. They...they live their lives." He didn't keep them locked away on the TARDIS. They normally went home between their visits, lived their lives without him, and eventually he would return to them.
"Just a moment," he answered. "It takes a minute."
Missy tiptoed along the room, peering down at the Doctor with a smirk.
Nervous energy buzzed in her stomach and she pushed it down. It was far more interesting to see her curiosity getting to him.
"Do you keep your pets on board?" Missy asked with a pop of her lips, passing time as the journey progressed. She pressed the heel of her hand to her stomach to try and press down the nervous flutter. She really had been locked up too long. "Or are your pets not housebound?"
Tiring of her curiosity, she returned down the stairs and sidled up next to him, throwing her head backwards. "Are we there yet?"

Unsurprisingly, neither seemed willing to apologize to the other. Not that he'd really expected anything heartfelt, but something would have been nice. Well, he supposed, maybe some day, right? He wasn't sure how much hope he had for that one, though.
"Hm?" he asked, looking up from the console, though he'd heard her perfectly well. "Oh. It's...that'd be where you left it." Not what she wanted to hear, but...well, he hadn't had a key, and he'd been a little preoccupied at the time. Oops.
He did start the TARDIS, though his eyes kept moving back to her. "Probably not. Things like to change every now and then." He wasn't sure how much he liked the idea of her rooting around the TARDIS on her own. Or rather, he was perfectly sure, and he didn't like it. He needed to trust her, though, didn't he? So maybe this was a good time to start. Besides, the TARDIS would keep her from doing anything either of them didn't want her to.
She rolled her eyes at his suggestion that she should apologise to the Tardis. She might be trying to turn. Good, but she had no intention of going soft with a machine. The Doctor would never learn, treating them like equals would only breed contempt. On the note of Tardises, a thought popped into her head.
"Where's my Tardis?" She said quite suddenly. "Did you find it when you brought me here? You know, that time you carried an unconscious Time Lady on board your mystery box, did you look for my home?"
She was talking fast, mainly to distract from the fact that she was still outside of the Vault . She turned her attention back to the Doctor.
"Start the old girl up, then," she hummer, approaching the metal stairway, she hopped up. "I want to have a wee look around. Is everything still the same?"
Still the same as when, she wasn't sure. When had she last been on board his ship. Other than the obvious execution to Vault journey, she wasn't sure.

He followed her, stepping into the TARDIS and allowing the door to swing closed behind him. He felt more at home here than he ever had in his office, even after all of these years. This was his home, and had been for more years than he cared to count. He met her gaze as she glanced to him, trying to look reassuring, but he wasn't entirely sure he could pull that off. This face wasn't one that was made for gentleness.
He frowned to himself as she began to walk towards the controls, though that was less due to a lack of trust than it was a desire to be the one who drove. He didn't need to say anything, though, because the TARDIS shocked her before he could, and his frown deepened.
"Behave, both of you," he scolded as Missy hit the TARDIS in return. "We're all going to have to get along now, understood? All of us." He paused. "Though I accept your apology." He paused. "Though you might want to apologize to her."
But he nodded as he was spoken to again, closing the distance between himself and the console, running a hand over it in what was meant to be comforting. "An alien rainforest," he said, looking to her with a small smile. "I can do that."
She entered, tentatively at first and then with a skip in her step. She forced herself to walk quickly, fearing that if she didn't her fear would paralyse her. She smiled, glanced at the Doctor quickly and let out a low breath. Could he hear her hearts pumping? She could, pounding in her ears.
She smiled again at the Doctor and walked over to the controls, trailing her fingers across them.
"Shall I drive?" Missy asked, a playful smile tugging at her lips. The Tardis gave her a sharp shock, reminded her that she still wasn't trust. Instinctively, she lashed out violently. Still, after all these years of rehabilitation, violence was always her first resort; especially when she felt pushed into a corner. The heel of her hand was still burning from its contact with the console. She looked over at the Doctor, guilt building in her stomach. Already, she'd probably broken one of his rules.
"Sorry. She hurt me first," Missy said. Then, knowing the Doctor preferred a proper apology. "I mean I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that."
She walked back to the Doctor. "Start her up then. I think you should pick some hot. Somewhere with lifeforms that can control their mind. Oh! A rainforest!"

He knew, of course, that it was very possible that this was not a good idea. Anything could happen, from the smallest mishap to the largest disaster, and it was likely that something would. Maybe not her fault, and maybe not his, but it seemed that something always happened when he was involved, and something certainly always happened when the both of them were involved together. That had been true for centuries, since they were children together. Perhaps, this time, they would at least be getting in trouble together.
Lead the way, she said, and so he did, leading her out of the Vault and up the stairs. He couldn't say he wasn't nervous, but he felt...optimistic as he led her to the TARDIS, as he opened the door and stepped aside for her to enter.
She smiled and ran her tongue along her lips. This was new for them, or at least it was new to her, actually caring about his emotions; making sure she got it just right.
She nodded, eyes looking from the Doctor to the Vault doors. Other than their excursion to his office, she'd not ventured outside the doors for decades. It had been even longer since she'd been somewhere for the sake of visiting it.
"Lead the way," Missy gestured as she smoothed down her skirt.

He didn't find her concern amusing, but had misread it. He hadn't realized that she was worried about it, that she was truly concerned. Had he, he wouldn't have been so flippant. Even for him, it was a little much to be making jokes when she was truly concerned. Just a little. Probably. It was probably just a little bit too much for him to laugh at her when she was showing true concern. He just didn't realize that she was.
"A few," he admitted. There were certainly places that didn't like the Doctor. Not as many, he assumed, as those that didn't like the Master, but he wasn't going to say that.
He smiled again, assuming again that he was meant to, and hopefully being correct this time. "Alright, then." They would start slow. maybe. Go somewhere gentle to start. The last thing they needed was to get in trouble already.
She bristled slightly at his smile, picking up on his amusement at her words. She couldn't help but worry that he found her amusing, that he found her brief concern trivial. And anyway, he had taken her to Skaro before and left her there. Well, to be fair to him he hadn't known it was Skaro at the time...
Shaking her head, she fixed her smile and approached him.
"Well, you know there are several places I can't go to. I'm barred. I suppose there's places you can't go either."
She considered his question and shook his head. "I've never really visited places just for visiting them. I'll trust your recommendations."

"I don't know. Maybe the place I told you about, or maybe we'll find somewhere knew. There's always Barcelona." He wasn't taking it as seriously as she may have liked, and certainly less seriously than he should, but when did he ever? "Why?" He looked at her, and he thought about it for a moment. Why? Because he was tired of sitting around here. Because he was bored. Because he wanted to see how she would react if he took her off planet. Because. "Because I want to."
She mentioned Skaro, and he smiled, just a little bit. It wasn't a good memory, of course, but the idea that he would take her to Skaro at all was enough for him to find amusing.
"No, no Skaro." A beat. "Is there anywhere you want to go?"
"Where?" Missy said instantly, standing and tightening her grip on the edge of the piano. "And why now?"
She felt her hearts beat faster, adrenaline running to her head. She did want to go out, but at the same time, she didn't. She thought of the previous times in recent decades- before her incarceration- that they'd gone somewhere together.
There was their lovely trip to UNIT and then their not so lovely trip to Skaro. That made her shiver involuntarily.
"Not Skaro," she said. To him, it might have seemed quite out of the blue. It was, after all, the kind of thing that made the humans think her quite mad, but she hoped that he would at least be able to keep up. "And not earth. Somewhere off planet."

He didn't dip into her mind, the same way that she didn't dip into hers, but he still felt that she, too, felt lighter today. Not that it was difficult to be lighter than they had been, but it was still pleasant. He understood that there would be good days and bad days, but he would accept that. Of course he would. He wouldn't expect her to be good all of the time. He would like it, of course, but he wouldn't expect it.
"Sure," he said. "Met him a few times. Got into a couple of fights with him. Brilliant man, though." He would always be brilliant, despite their fights. "Very famous, among humans." There was a pause, and he spoke again, hands clasped in front of him. "I was wondering if you wanted to get out of here for a little while."
She smiled broader, actively trying not to read his thoughts, but picking up on his mood. He was lighter, optimistic she felt and he was hopeful for her. He almost seemed pleased to see her. And, she was pleased to see him.
She watched keenly as he entered her space, just checking all was well. Then, she turned her attention back to her book.
"Nothing very interesting," she hummed. "It was written by a human. Dickens. Have you heard of him?"

He thought about the last time they had left the Vault frequently. It had, he felt, opened his eyes to quite a few things about her. Her anger, her grief, her sadness, all of which were important, all of which were so deeply human. And while they hadn't had any more moments like that, it had given him hope, a hope that remained as he approached the Vault now.
"So I am," he said, smiling just a little bit and giving a small nod towards the book she'd just put down. "Reading anything good?"
@capaciityforpain
Missy stretched, clicked her back and took a sip of her tea. It was still piping hot and burned her throat as it went down.
She placed her book face-down and tapped against its spine. It had been three months since the last time she'd tried to leave the Vault. What a disaster that had been. Still, she was happier now, more settled despite her restricted life.
Then, she heard the door opening. She half turned.
"Honey, your home."

He sighed knowingly, and he nodded. "I know," he said. Perhaps not personally, as he didn't do the things that she did, but he did know what it was like to need to find something to get the feelings out of him. "Why do you think I'm always running?"
But then she glared at him, and he felt that their moment was over. Perhaps their entire visit was over, which was something that left the Doctor feeling unexpectedly sad. He'd rather enjoyed their visit. He wasn't fond of the look in her eye, though, and he was rather sure that her words could be counted as a threat, so he thought it was best to take her advice.
"I'll be back later, then."
Missy nodded. It wasn't the answer that she wanted, though she didn't know what answer she would have wanted.
"It didn't stick around when I forgot about it," she sighed. "When I'm busy doing all the things you don't like, I forget."
She looked at the Doctor accusingly, suddenly feeling like all of her pain was his fault.
"I want to hurt something now."
She said it matter of factly, stating it because if she kept it hidden, it would bubble under the surface and she'd lash out and then he'd be annoyed.
"Maybe you should go"
