I made a post similar to this before but if Stargate: Atlantis was airing today the McKay love would be so intense. Heā€™s literally THE blorbo blueprint. heā€™s wet, heā€™s pathetic, heā€™s whiny, heā€™s a coward, heā€™s the bravest man in the world, he has incredible character growth, he accidentally destroyed a solar system, he saved the world countless times, heā€™s annoying, he cares about his friends, heā€™s nd coded. heā€™s such a fully developed and complicated character played by a genuinely talented actor.
donā€™t even get me started on McShep lol. the only reason it lost the shipping poll so bar (rip) is because itā€™s an older fandom. McShep makes me feral fr fr.

let's all talk about supernatural. i'll start. in 2009 kim manners told misha collins it was gay to sit on a bed. due to the lack of distance. he was right. and misha collins did it anyway. what followed was 12 years of television subject to different directors writers and actors all with different opinions on the subject of whether or not dean and castiel were gay. because of this rotating list of minds and directions the messages you receive are varied. but crucially. there is groundwork laid in closeups. standing five feet apart in bobby's kitchen filmed as if they're face to face. across the room from each other in tmwwbk but cuts between close up to close up. now you could easily argue that camerawork that rejects this method is trying to convey a different message of less empathy. but. we are not working only with camera work that conveys distance. we're working with a foundation of intimate conversations filmed as intimate closeups . followed by intimate conversations filmed with yards and yards between them. for an amv i was trying to use the s8 talk where cas is sitting on the bed and dean walks over sits down and says talk to me and i eventually had to scrap it because they're never in the same frame. i was going frame by frame in that scene trying to get maybe three seconds where you can see both of them but you never can. in the scene where dean sits a foot away and asks. what's wrong. you can tell me. you can talk to me. and cas proceeds to bare his soul. which is one of two things: bad directing, or purposeful directing. bad directing requires us to operate under the assumption that people who work on supernatural are bad at their jobs (likely). purposeful directing requires us to operate under the assumption that people who work on supernatural are good at their jobs, and given an intimate conversation, looked for ways to dilute the emotion in it, and did so. this is also likely. when supernatural shows me castiel telling dean i love you, and does it with shoddy camerawork, they are practicing tell not show. they are turning to the camera and telling me. this means nothing. disregard this. dont you see how they're a good court length apart from each other. doesn't this distance make you feel like you should interpret this with a platonic lens. but what they are showing me. is castiel telling dean winchester. i love you. which comes across even through the janky disjointed shots. the diluted effect still has an outsized emotional impact. so my takeaway is not. well i guess this means nothing. it is. i see the tricks you are trying to use on me. and they dont work on me because i know how to interpret storytelling and i'm not young and shiny and stupid. my takeaway is . wow. dean and cas., are in love for real, and they put it on my screen, and i am going to plant dynamite in director richard speight's home

There is a certain level of humor and frustration felt through the first half of this episode as Lucius returns. We find that he's cobbled an identity together based off of Sheppard to gain the fame and recognition he longs for.
The frustrating thing is that Sheppard, Rodney, Teyla, Ronon, and Carson have been heroic. They've saved towns, risked their lives for people who don't know them, been bruised and bled for countless others, and they've never gotten the kind of adulation Lucius is getting in this town. He's using Ancient tech and their stories. Praise is lavished on him. Yet the people who are actually heroic, actually the good guys get hardly a glance on a good day, and run out of town on a bad day.
And then, look, they go and be heroic anyway. No praise. No nothing. They try to tell the town the truth, and they get derided, but when Kolya shows up they make sure they're not risking the town. (After a minor John! from Teyla.) They all try to die for Rodney. Sheppard not only saves his team but helps the town stand up after telling Lucius not to try and be a hero, because he knows that's dangerous.
It starts out frustrating to see them unacknowledged yet again, and then reminds us who and what real heroes are. Also, we get the cathartic moment of Sheppard finally putting Kolya down and ridding the Pegasus galaxy of that constant danger. Can you imagine? After the torture, Todd, and what Kolya put Weir through, to finally see him go down? Nice.
Also, this episode made me think of these:

The publishing industry has changed A LOT in the last 25 years, along with education standards, which is why it's really concerning seeing younger people online tslking about how they won't read "old books" bc [insert problematic reason].
I am begging you all to read books published before the rise of social media emedia. 25-30 years, at least. You want to appreciate clever prose, you want to actually improve your vocabulary and reading comprehension in the natural, non-studying way? Go read books published back before it all went to hell!
Iā€™m so sorry but in the nicest way possible do yall actually read books or just read words??? Cause Iā€™ve been seeing that trend of people not understanding how ā€œsnarledā€ and ā€œeyes darkenedā€ and ā€œeyes softenedā€ etc. was used in a book and likeā€¦
Genuinely, do yall just not have imagination?? Or not understand figurative language??? Also eyes do literally darken and soften have you not lived a life??? How do you read with no imagination? Is this how you get through so many books in one month - you simply donā€™t take the time the understand the words as they are read?

Saw a 50 year old lawyer, a partner in a firm, talking about how she can't afford to live in the same apartment she had when she was in school and waiting tables.
fuck inflation. just saw a listing for an appartment complex we lived in when we immigrated to canada and my parents had miserable jobs. we can't afford it now.

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."
The thing I keep coming back to, with all the *gestures expansively* is that real life doesn't have peaceful epilogues.
Every single win has to be defended. Forever. I'm sorry. It sucks. The Nazis lost until they stopped losing. The US had abortion rights, and then 50 years later it didn't. Empires fall, and then they invade other countries again. Oppressive regimes are overthrown and replaced with other oppressive regimes. You will never finish the work etc etc etc. Which is why it's so fucking important to be able to acknowledge and celebrate progress, when it happens. The people who came before you didn't put in all that work for nothing, and you aren't, either. You can't save it all for the Ultimate Victory because there is never going to be an Ultimate Victory. There's no such thing as a time when everything is good, and ours shall not be the commune of Heaven.
