Hazel had to struggle between flanking the Captain and shoving her aside, gripping the phaser and watching one--thank God for small favors, just one--drone fall to the floor.
Then she saw the field medic sidled against Mudah in the corner of her eye--the both of them scared, capable, except she would be holding the nurse responsible for anything that happened to that boy. Dr. Byrne not far behind, thank God. Except--somehow in the skirmish the scrawny kid in Sciences tumbled, a clean wound in his shoulder.
"Listen," she barked, firing again. Nothing. "They're not going to assimilate anybody. Too--fuck--too small a group. We gotta take 'em out, that's it."
Unless one of them was worth assimilating in their eyes. Which, at this rate, could happen.
"Captain, Darzi, Olivera--"
She couldn't fucking see Olivera.
She nudged Don's shoulder again, knowing they couldn't be any more than a few paces away from the transporter. "C'mon."
The sound of a phaser being fired made Don shake, in what she could only describe as combination of a rush of excitement, and a shiver of absolute and raw fear.
The gun was out of the holster and in her hand before the security man at her side could even blink.
"What part of move it did you not understand?” she yelled over the fire, just as the clang of metallic feet over the clean floor of the ship resonated all around them, made her clench her jaw.
"Hazel! Hazel you stay with me. Your boy goes with Sciences and Dr. Byrne, get them the hell out of here, quickly. Keep your comm on Line 3," to Ortega, and to Darzi, "you better know how to shoot straight girl, ‘cause you’re staying with us."
Fuck.

"Get back to me when you're not." Hazel turned and shot a glare at the man, along with the littler one lagging behind. Then there were two girls behind them--a little antsier, but she held more sympathy.
If Mudah could lead the rest of security in the back, with the medic protected, weapons and research in the center, it would make for a decent tactical formation, impromptu or not.
In her mind, Sciences plus the woman of the hour slowed them down, although it wasn't really true. That helmsman was trouble and she knew it--so, in a low whisper, she added: "Stay with me, Olivera, we gotta--"
Somewhere in between that, between the scrape of someone's gait or the sound of a tricorder, she felt the weight of a pursuit crash down on her. Borg drones with no fanfare, just advancing mindlessly, like hornets. She did everything in her power not to scramble backwards, the transporter was just the hall down, a scrape away--
She could see the face of something that used to be human, and winced.
"Move move move," and she drew her phaser, firing a few times. If they could just take them out in a few seconds, they'd make it out without a scratch. Somehow she doubted it would be that easy.
Jesús hadn’t even noticed the whirring until the Head of Security snapped at him. What had she told him, he really couldn’t understand, nor focus —but really, it hadn’t take him more than a fraction of a second for all to come crashing down.
He grabbed his phaser, holding it up as he blinked and turned to scan the nearest hallway. Nothing. Not yet. But it wouldn’t be a surprise if they showed up whenever.
"Then let’s move." He nudged Mira, nodding at her to go ahead of them. "What are they scanning for, can’t they hurry up?"

Of course it wasn't her job to tell the researchers to quiet the fuck down, that they should have done their scanning on the way here and not back. No such luck.
They had Dr. Byrne. Getting back to a transporter was the next priority. She couldn't hear anyone in the decks above, hardly the team--she had to look behind a few times, flanking the Captain, checking--naturally--on Mudah.
When Hazel heard whirs, clanking, the flash of green light in her periphery, the anxiety dissolved and hardened.
"Watch it." She clutched her phaser, speaking as quietly as she could. "We gotta move."

[Dumbass. Another one of those kids--even though she knew he wasn't, really, she could have only been a little older than him--with some bullshit going on.]
Tumblr media
Other day he was acting like a rabbit--[and she glanced at her knowingly]--screwing like one, too. We know what happened?
[God. She raises a hand, faltering as she tries to decide whether to pinch the bridge of her nose or rub at her temple. She tucks her hair behind her ear.]
No. Absolutely not. Olivera, [she barks, and she turns just in time to see the man blink and quicken his step.]
Tumblr media
I need to slap some sense in that boy, I swear to God.

Right. [She folds her arms to her chest, falling alongside her and eventually trading a glance.]
Tumblr media
Should we be letting Olivera lag behind like that?
Thank you Hazel.

Now follow me.

Okay, gentlemen, you heard the Captain.
Stay behind us, keep it quiet, and do not put your gun back in your belt. I'm taking questions now, but if you're smart, you won't have any.

And maybe we could all stand to be a little calmer in a state of emergency.
Who says I’m not keeping a cool head? I’m just as calm as everyone else.

Watch it.
If you don't keep a cool head, neither will the whole damn ship.

Think of it as detective work. If he had all those tattoos, what did he do before this? They're not cheap. And he'd have had to go back and get at least one of them on his arm finished.
Just something to think about next time you swing into medbay. Or the bridge.
[She hadn't told him who the other offending member was, but it didn't matter.]
Tumblr media
Yeah, well. I wasn't gonna tell you, but I saw him talking to some blond android chick. You know how they are. If you ask me, dude looks like too much of a dork to be playing the field like that.
Been such a goddamn gossip lately, but it's hard not to when you see everyone. [She pats him on the shoulder with a bit more strength than necessary.] Sorry, babe.
I don’t think I want to see him completely naked. But, thank you, [or something. That was a lot of tattoos, of which he hardly saw the point, but that was just his Romulan side showing.]
Tumblr media
[And just like that they were talking about him. Mudah blinked at her, shifting on his spot.] Well —I was drunk. Too fast. [He got scared out of his goddamn mind.] I dunno. I’m good, though, I promise. Pinky promise.

I dunno why they couldn't make it to their own damn room. Y'all kids aren't patient and it always bites you in the ass.
[Then again, they weren't kids. Olivera was just a year younger. But she knew she came out on top in the end, so it didn't matter.] Their kind, at least. Anyway, I'd say about five, six. You wouldn't see them unless he was stripped down. Which he was.
Tumblr media
[Hazel wrinkled her nose, a little guilty that she'd gotten him flustered, but fuck it.] What happened to you two?
Tumblr media
Oh my God, [yet he raises his hand and high fives her back, because he may be stunned out of his fucking mind but he still knows better than missing out an opportunity like that.
She’s going to kill him someday, but it will be an awesome death.] Oh my God. I’m —I don’t —he’s not my boyfriend —how many tattoos, [no! He does not want to know that.
But it’s valuable information though.]  Who was, you know? Who else —why would they in a rec room?! [That’s the only question that has ever mattered. Ah well.
He’ll never set foot on that place again.]

From what I can tell, he does, but I'm not always right. And I like him the same way I like pizza--if there's some pizza, and it's not anybody's, then I'll take it. But I'm pretty sure I can't have a slice this time around. [She winks at him, and pushes back in his chair.]
God, no. That man's got an icicle so far up his ass nobody's dick's gonna melt it. [Somehow she doubted the idea of anyone's dick being remotely near there in the first place. You could tell he liked women by the fact he had no idea how to treat them.]
C'mon, you got one more, Moody. Getting warmer.
Holy shit.
Tumblr media
[So who’d go around exposing themselves. That was kinda hard to guess, he would have liked to say he knew a lot of high-ranking crew members. But really, the one he was familiar the most was Hazel.
The things she must’ve seen. He kinda still wanted to peek at the videos. He was curious, so what.]
Wait, like, the Captain’s assistant has a crush on her? Do you like her assistant? [That was not what he should’ve focused on, but, whatever.]
Okay. Uh. The First Officer?

Yeah, the whole nine yards, kiddo. [She put her chin in her hands, wrinkling her nose, and realizing she'd have to undergo some sort of brainwashing to get the image of the CMO's skinny ass out of her consciousness.]
Donovan? Yeah, I wish. [She rolled her eyes.] That assistant dude's following her around like a damn puppy, and if she doesn't hop on that soon, so help me God I will.
You got two more guesses.
[Oh! No wonder she didn’t want him to see. But really, he was a security officer, surely it hadn’t been that bad? No one could have been so obvious.]
Tw—high ranking officers. [Dang.] Like, private, private time? The whole deal? Huh.
Tumblr media
[He still wasn’t discouraged, though.] The Captain? [And he winced right away, because no way was the woman so indiscreet. Besides, he knew she and Hazel were good friends. Hopefully she wouldn’t take it too badly.]

Just had to monitor two high-ranking officers having some private time on the 4A rec room sofa. Wanna play three guesses as to who they were?
[He smiles when she says his name, and maybe he jumps on his spot a little bit. But then he looks confused —and naturally, his eyes flicker to the monitor room.]
The security cameras? Why, what happened?

Afternoon, Mr. Mudah.
Tumblr media
Fine. Just be thankful you weren't watching the security monitors. You're too damn pure, I don't wanna wreck that.
Hey, Miss Crosby.
Tumblr media
Uhm, everything okay?
