oh to be an aggressive hockey guy who gets into fights during matches and has to be patched up afterwords by the exasperated medic who has a soft spot for me who’s always telling me to be careful and sometimes we fight over my reckless attitude and maybe it gets heated one night and the medic yells “i care about you asshole!!” and i need to reevaluate our every single interaction

Jamie shook his head, waving his hand away at Love's compliment. Any sort of praise about raising Avery had to go to Lily. She was there for most of it while he pursued his career in teaching, writing books. "You can thank my ex-wife, mostly," he told her with a chuckle. "She was a lot better at all the lesson-teaching and everything than I was, ironically. I was more of the fun dad. But that's not all that it sounds like."
It was a miracle that Avery had grown up to be as great of a young woman as she was. And though there were still a lot of things to mend about their relationship as father and daughter, he could at least take pride in that they were growing closer. After all, he was the one who frequently attended the games she coached.
"Oh, I know they got this one in the bag," Jamie said. "Go Spartans!"
-
And the Spartans took the win about 45 minutes later, after a close matchup. Jamie joined the whole school in cheering the team on for their victory, and from across the court, he'd even given Avery a wink as a wordless congratulations.
He jogged down to the court alongside Love, greeting Nico. "Hey, champ, congrats. What was going on with that kid on the other team, the 32-year-old? Jeez. But I knew you could kick his ass."
Tumblr media
Then, glancing over at Love, he said, "By the way. Avery and I are gonna go out for a bite to eat. You two wanna come with?"
Tumblr media
She laughed. That seemed to happen a lot whenever she was around Jamie. He was a delight, and definitely improved her mood anytime she was around him. A person that she had never known before her son started volleyball, quickly becoming one of her favorites.
" Oh god, don't tell me that! I'm in for it, aren't I? " Love appreciated his honesty, though. Most parents would have sugar coated it, but Jamie? Always told it like it was. Honestly, it was a much bigger help than someone lying to her. At least, she could prepare herself for what was to come.
It could be hard at times, being a woman raising a son without a father. But she loved Nico, and would go to the ends of the earth for him. His father, on the other hand...
" It seems like she's grown into a lovely young woman. Nico is always talking about how she is his favorite. I think the whole team agrees. You've done a good job at raising her. " She smiles. A true compliment, because Avery did a wonderful job at handling the sometimes overly rowdy group of kids. " No doubt they're going to win this one. I'd be surprised if they didn't. " Strawberry blonde says the last part quietly, not wanting to upset any of the opposing teams parents that were seated nearby.

She wasn't sure when they started talking about all these sappy things, but she didn't half mind it.
Usually Soleil and Sidney were butting heads, trying not to chew other's off as they tossed insults and see which ones ricocheted. So cozying up on the couch with him, half-watching a movie, talking about feelings... it was nice. There was no one else she could talk to about stuff like this. Times like these reminded Soleil of why they were friends, even if others might've raised a brow at the unlikely pairing.
She never did.
But she was quick to throw another disgusted look at him, her nose scrunching at the thought of dating someone in the movies. "It sounds nice and all but like, no offense, y'all tend to be douchebags more often than not," Soleil responded, chuckling. "Like... if actors were anythin' like they were in Old Hollywood, all debonair and kind and stuff, that'd be different. But everybody in showbusiness today is so... vapid."
Tumblr media
She would know; her endless pursuit of a career in pop stardom spun her around enough.
Now she was fully paying attention to him, the movie in the background completely blurry to her. Her fingers wove through his head of hair and she couldn't help but smile at him. If only she could clone him.
"No, Sidney, you're no knight in shinin' armor, you're right," she said. "But you don't gotta be. I think that's what I like most about you. Is when you're just yourself."
" You wouldn't touch those apps with a ten foot pole, yet you'd give Farmers Only a chance? Either you're fucking crazy or desperate. I haven't decided which yet. "
He looks up at her, brow raised. There wasn't any good in him. If there had been any when he was born, it was long gone by now. Years of being spoiled and getting whatever he wanted had done that to him. Maybe she was crazy, because that should have been the last word used to describe Sidney.
Still, it made him feel some sort of way. One of the many reasons why he kept Soleil around, and why he would do anything for her. She saw the good in him. Believed in him. Even though he didn't, she did. Probably the first person to. His parents had given up on him long ago.
" I wouldn't hold your breath. I'm no knight in shining armor, and I don't think I'll ever be. Just not who I am. " It was comforting, feeling her hands run gently through his hair. Made no attempt to move in her lap, and didn't care to look at the TV. Whatever was playing, he had lost interest in long ago.
" You need a good guy, Sol. Not someone shitty like me. Maybe I should play match maker. Try to find you someone real nice - in both the looks department and personality wise. What do you think? I know a couple of people in the movie scene. Sure one of them would want to go on a date with you. "

Joey.
If the first time he'd seen his baby brother since all this shit went down also wasn't the same time he'd seen him throw away a precious bottle of alcohol, Jeremiah might have actually shed a tear.
As it stood Jeremiah didn't see Joey that often. Joey lived full-time in the United States; he'd only moved here about six months ago. He saw their oldest brother more than anyone else, and that was only because as Angel said, he was his bitch boy. The two were close when they were children, given that Jackson was quite the jump in age from them. But the older they got, Jeremiah always found himself relating more to Jackson; seeing himself more in the eldest, while the youngest partied and went off to college.
But if you asked him—Joey was his favorite brother.
He looked at Angel and remembered that they were in a sort of panic moment and gave her a shrug. It wasn't his plan for the other O'Connor to be here, either.
Tumblr media
Joey was more than suspicious of the small girl who'd just walked in. There was no way he could keep track of his older brother's romances—out of all three brothers, Jeremiah was most notorious for having the most conquests—but he had a feeling that whoever this person was wasn't really an ex-fling of his brother's.
Not because she wasn't pretty or anything—she was probably the prettiest one he could remember meeting—but because there was something about her that was just outright different. She didn't seem like a part of Jeremiah's world.
And while anyone else would've insisted on investigating, pin her as some sort of gold digger or thief who just wanted to drain Jeremiah of what he owned, sell it all for some cash. He'd had his run-ins with a fair share of women like that, whether by story or firsthand. But something tugged within Joseph to believe her, even though she was clearly lying. He deadpanned her for a second before letting out a chuckle, circling from behind the kitchen counter to reach a hand out for her to shake. He'd play along for now and he figured that things would make sense eventually.
"Yeesh, I'm sorry for your loss," he told her. It was both sarcastic and sincere; he'd somehow struck a balance. "Yeah, I'm Joey. Jeremiah's baby brother. It's nice to meet you, too. So, uh... how long did you know each other?"
Tumblr media
Celeste was a nice girl. A bit of a ditz, if Angel were being honest. But nice. She felt bad for lying to her, but since her shadow wouldn't be walking the Earth again any time soon - she figured it wouldn't hurt to give the receptionist a confidence boost. He couldn't deny it, so she could live her life happily thinking that Jeremiah had been madly in love with her.
With a final wave, she makes it over to the elevator. Letting out the breath she had been holding as soon as the doors closed. Not saying much as they rode what felt like into the sky.
" If someone is in there? " She repeats him, eyes wide. " You said no one would be! I asked you, and you said you were sure...I swear, there better not be a soul in there, or I'm finding some way to bring you back to life just so I can kill you myself. " Girl says through gritted teeth.
The doors open and honestly, Angel thought she was going to be prepared for what she was going to see - but she wasn't. It was hands down the nicest place she had ever been in. It wasn't tacky, nor was it bare. She was surprised. Although, if there was one thing she had learned about Jeremiah these past few days, it was that he was all about image. It made sense that his penthouse suite was as gorgeous as it was.
She steps in but the sound of someone rummaging through cabinets makes her stop dead in her tracks. Looks over her shoulder, giving Jeremiah the angriest glare she could muster.
Fuck.
What was she going to do?
Angel didn't have much time because soon, he spotted her. It was clear he was confused. Hell, anyone would have been. Why was some random girl showing up at his dead brother's place?
" Uh, hi. " Smiling, she takes another step forward. Well, there was no turning back now. She couldn't even use the excuse of 'oops, wrong room' because she had been given a key specifically for this suite.
" I have a few things here that I needed to pick up. Jeremiah and I...we were close. " Fuck, fuck, fuck. What was she supposed to say? Do? She didn't know how close the brothers were. What they told one another. " We were dating. Secretly. Secret lovers. We didn't go public with it or anything because, well...he was older than me. Thought it might be a little too scandalous. So we kept it a secret. Yep. Secret lovers. " Now would be a good time to cry, if she was upset about the loss. She sniffs and thinks back to one of the saddest days of her life - and the tears came easily. " I'm sorry, I'm just not dealing with this too well. Joey, right? I'm Angel. "

He was glad there was no fight about it. Palmer could've easily demanded to know what happened to her, avenge her upset feelings, and sleep soundly knowing all was right in the world. But he was glad that, despite how downright backwards it felt to let this slide, he did it anyway. One thing he learned from growing up with his parents was that sometimes, somebody had to be the one to focus on the fact that at least we have a boat rather than be the one panicking that they're stranded in the ocean.
"Yeah. Sure, kid. Milkshakes."
-
He didn't think much of the way Luna walked arm-in-arm with him toward the diner. She was able to have fun with things like that, gallivant; meanwhile, he looked in all directions to assess the safety of it all. He'd never been to this diner before, but he'd driven by it once or twice. It just so happened to be in one of the more desolate areas of the city, closer to the outskirts.
"Looks like someplace truck drivers would hang out," he said, nodding. There was a small row of them all parked beside each other in a further corner of the lot, near the dirt. The highway was about two minutes away from here, so it made sense.
Once inside, the smell of bacon grease and salty fries filled Palmer's nose. He remembered then that he had skipped dinner, and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich had been waiting for him in the fridge back home. The diner was indeed still stuck in an era long passed: The booths were made of that hard plastic with those shiny red and white tufted cushions on top. The floor was covered in that black-and-white chessboard tile. Even the waitresses were dressed in those old-timey dresses and aprons.
They secured a booth by the door, Palmer's car in sight and easily accessible just in case. He thanked the waitress with a soft smile, half-heartedly picking up the menu. Honestly, he was still hyperaware of Luna's emotions. She seemed alright...
"Order whatever you want, yeah? It's on me. Looks like they have a couple milkshakes to choose from," he thought out loud, deciding to focus on eating for the meantime. "So you said your dad used to take you here when you were a kid?"
Tumblr media
You don't totally look fine.
That's because she wasn't. Far from it, actually. What was the point in lying to Palmer? She might as well rip off the bandaid, let him know why she was so upset.
But then she was afraid of what he might do. She knew how protective he was over not just her family, but her as well. It didn't take a genius to figure that one out and while she'd love to see Vince get his ass beat by a man ten times his size, she didn't want Palmer to get himself into any trouble on her account.
" Yeah, sure. Food sounds good. " Although she wasn't sure if she'd be able to stomach anything, with the way she was feeling. But then she gets a small glimmer in her eyes as she looks over at him. " Somewhere that has milkshakes, please? " Because she needed something comforting and what was more comforting than a sweet that reminded her of her childhood?
When they arrived at a cozy looking diner, Luna's mood seemed to lighten. She was still upset of course, but was welcoming the distraction - an evening with Palmer and good food.
" I think my father used to come to this place when he was younger. He was a truck driver, you know. " It was clear she was talking about her biological father, not her politician step-dad. " Perfect spot. You couldn't have picked a better place. " Although, she had kind of forced him to stop here.
She gets out of the car. Waits patiently for the man to get out, and then grabs his arm. Pulling him close to her side as the two of them walked in. " Like, how cool is this place? I love the retro vibe it has still, despite the rest of the world changing around it. "
