I guess the thing about the discourse I'll never get is how it is so, so easy to love Ed.
Like, the text of the show is so extremely sympathetic to him. Obviously not everyone has the same taste but readings of the show that don't like Ed and treat him with sympathy are actively going against the text. We're supposed to love him. He says he's not a good person and he's unlovable and we're supposed to be sad for how much he's hurting and wanting to help him because we know that's not true.
OFMD really takes us by the hand and it shows us the most lovable man ever and it says "this guy is so scared he's unlovable that he's going to try to drive away the people who love him, he's not going to think life is worth living, but he's gonna be okay because he's so, so incredibly loved." And yeah if you miss that somehow then I think you've missed the point of the show.

Beginning to suspect that they cut the boyfriends/zaddy/catboy scene simply because it took away too much from the intended emotional weight of Izzy's death. With every scond of bts footage I see I keep thinking "okay, so this is why Izzy said he wanted to go, he had to listen to Ed call Stede his zaddy and then ramble stream-of-consciousness about how Zheng was like three super cool stealthy cats." It makes it too easy to understand why his will to live drained from his body. If they'd kept it all in then everyone would've been nodding along when he died like "yeah this is probably what he would've wanted"

just something about the show letting the characters breathe. Stede looking back on the moonlight almost kiss after realising he's in love with Ed and it was always reciprocated? recontextualising that beautiful moment in his mind later probably going "oh my god we both wanted each other"? Probably worrying that it's now lost forever and how things would've turned differently if they'd just taken the leap? And then being swept off his feet by Ed later bringing it back? Taking that step this time to steal a kiss from him under the moonlight 🥹
Ed thinking back on their co captains moment and marmalade in the cabin and being cared for and made to feel safe, and deciding he'd show Stede how he loves him by speaking his language? Bringing him breakfast in bed, trying not to freak out? But then ultimately having his efforts acknowledged after a scary night that had a beautiful conclusion 🥹
the way this show lets its characters come to conclusions slowly and at their own pace, not rushing their journey of not just realising how the other person deserves to be loved - because loving someone else the way they love each other is easy, it comes naturally to both Ed and Stede - but also how to cut yourself some slack, to take that small step towards self love. Now that is something beautiful and rare to watch

Ok but this makes both times they refer to each other as ‘friend’ make so much more sense. This is David’s beloved ‘rule of threes’ in action. Stede calls Ed his friend in 2x06, Ed calls Stede his friend in 2x07, Stede calls Ed his boyfriend in 2x08. Set up, call back, payoff. We got the setup and the callback but the payoff was cut. But at least we got it now.

I love that Stede has been struggling with being a "good pirate" for weeks and Ed's measure of a good pirate is "still alive."
