Wip Wednesday! Burning Man AU
Hello we have a hopeful publication date for the beginning of this AU I've been talking about since december 25, 2022. There will be stuff about the series and fun burning man stuff at @burningmanau , run by @toasted-cricket. All i want for Christmas is to get an ask about the series there someday!
This wip clip is from the first story cycle, after Joel's run off from a very confusing and complicated Jimmy situation
And there’s Etho, chatting with some hermits, Joel can’t even process which ones. Etho’s got his back to Joel but it’s Etho and his brain explodes, and then before he can attempt to teleport away one of the hermits says “Hey Joel," and Etho turns and they lock eyes and Joel thinks he might die, actually.
Etho’s got a hardcore dust mask covering most of his face, but Joel’s sure he sees a smile in his eyes. A smile for Joel, a smile because he’s seeing Joel after almost a year, a smile because he recognizes Joel, remembers him. He thought he’d probably exaggerated things about Etho in his memories, in his fantasies, but his eyes were everything he remembered.
Joel felt like if he kept staring into Etho’s eyes he would die; Joel felt like if he looked away from Etho he would die.

This is the Temple Galaxia, from BRC 2018.
I've volunteered as a Temple Guardian for 4/5 years I've been to the Burn. The Temple speaks to me, as it speaks to many others.
People are more respectful and compassionate to each other here at the temple than they are anywhere else at the Burn, and people at the Burn are already twice as open-hearted and generous, in my experience, than 80% of humans I meet off-Playa.
We come to the Temple to Breathe. To Grieve. To Meditate. To Remember. To purge that which we are Done With.
I once saw a woman in a wedding dress hiking out to the Temple with three suitcases, small, medium and large. I later saw those suitcases, with words written all over their surfaces, stacked neatly again a Temple wall, and I heard from a friend that she also stripped off the wedding dress and hiked back into the City in her underwear and hiking boots.
You can LITERALLY leave your baggage at the Temple. 👰💐🧳🎨🎻📨
I write letters and memorials to loved ones and use a 📌to pin it to the walls. You can take ✏️ and write your message directly on the boards. 2018 was the year I learned that an older dance friend, Stan, had died just days before I headed out. On behalf of the community and myself, I wrote his name and his love of dance with a green sharpie, and that we all loved him.
Sometimes you go to the Temple to remember. Sometimes you go to forget. There's as many reasons to spend time there as there are Burners who visit.

Six Sentence Sunday
so much more structure than wip wednesday!
This is from the first Joel fic in the @burningmanau series, written by myself and @toasted-cricket coming to you... hopefully next month??? Joel is sulking and freaking out in a closed turtle-shaped bar at burning man (80k person festival in the desert, see the tumblr for more)
He called out, “We’re closed!” hoping whoever it was would go away without having to risk eye contact.
Joel heard silence, followed by steps coming towards the bar. What the actual fuck? Joel stood up suddenly, read to curse whoever it was out… until he saw who it was.
“Even for me?”
Etho was unfairly cute, that line should be cheesy, he should scoff, but Joel’s heart melted and his brain mostly turned off.
