can u plz giv me design tips for sparkledogz?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this applies to sparkleanimals of all kinds! cats are the ones i've always drawn, and am most comfortable drawing, but this can apply to sparkledogs and any other creature you'd like to sparklify
this is not a step-by-step guide, nor is it the one and only way this can be done. i'm giving these tips from my own experience, and i'm by no means a sparklefur expert–i just live here! if you ask someone else for tips you'd get a really different answer, and that's a good thing–i think sparkleanimals should be fun and personal for everyone ^-^ without further adieu (and apology in advance for the long post), here's the tips that i find most helpful in my design and drawing!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for basic construction, such as hair and how chibi you want your style to be, take the artist's style that spoke/speaks to you most and study it. it can be a sparkleartist from the past, or someone who draws in the style today–my style is heavily influenced by sketches and studies i've done of old banitehkitty videos, because those are the first thing that comes to mind when i think of silly sparklecats
but you're probably here mostly for sparkle color theory, which i have a different strategy for! but the tip remains mostly the same–study designs of the past, note how many colors are used in each design? how many times is rainbow used? what are some common motifs and markings (stripes, stars, frutiger-metro vectors) and where do you see them the most?
@oekakidogarchive and @sparklefurever have a good selection of archived sparkleanimals–i'll take one design and show what i've learned from it ^-^
Tumblr media
rainbows are fun, and fun is encouraged! but notice that this design in particular has a very limited amount of colors–it's the markings, the variety, and the repetition and alternation of color that makes it "sparkly," at least, that's why it brings the term "sparkledog" to mind with me (in a positive way!)
Tumblr media
to illustrate the challenge i posed in the last image, and really get that design inspiration flowing, i created a bank of four shades of grey (including black and white) and four different kinds of designs, limiting myself to only those–i want to show how you can use combinations of limited colors and limited designs to create that over-complicated look that makes it "sparkly"
Tumblr media
for the kitty (top left,) i picked only circles/rings for the pattern and all of the colors–when i make a sparkle design, my focus is on contrast, a really different color next to another color, a bright color next to a dark one, etc. i used the rings both with light and dark colors, and i made them look different on the body as i did on the tail
the checkerboard wolf is much the same thing, i only used the checkerboard pattern and i used a variety of colors but only one design. finally, for the fox, i used both stars and stripes as patterns, showing that you can combine patterns such as using a star-shaped (stripe) of color around and inside the star markings
my point with this exercise is that if you can do this with a bank of colors and markings and mixing and matching them, imagine if you could add an unlimited color palette and accessories to things like i've made here!
to sum up how to use the study of colors, markings, and art styles from tip 1:
use contrast! darker against lighter makes things pop
repeat different markings and motifs, it makes the body more cohesive
challenge yourself! i have a good example in the final section
this is a good time to say that not everyone does or has to play by these rules–these aren't rules, there are no rules. especially if you're going for your own thing instead of wanting to mimic the sparklecats of old (which is also totally fine! sparkleanimals can be modern too, my blog just happens to focus on a style specific to a past time period and so i like to improve my work by making it more "genuine" to the time period)
Tumblr media
this is probably most of what you've seen on my blog XD take an object, a show, a concept, just a bunch of colors associated with something and catify it! dogify it! this is my favorite kind of sparkleanimal to make is something based off something else. my supermarket cats are probably the best example i have of this, but i also made one of the sake of this post
Tumblr media
i like doing this the most because i like already having colors that inspire me, and things that i can translate into cat accessories or attributes (like the walmart cats' shopping carts!) but this is going to vary heavily for everyone XD
and that goes for everything i've said! everyone has a different definition of what fits a sparklecat/dog, everyone draws them for different reasons, some people are dedicated to being authentic and others just like to have fun, there's no wrong way to do it and by all means don't take everything i've said here as hard rules. i'm honored that you asked for tips on sparkledesigning and i hope some of what i've learned can help you! mostly i'm just excited to see more people draw sparkleanimals, they're cool :3
i hope this answered your question, and sorry for the long post!
