You know what’s more fun than worldbuilding that makes some fantasy races EEEEVIIIIIIILLLLL!!!!? Worldbuilding that gives the different races cultural differences that help explain why there’s a lot of conflict between them:
Goblin culture doesn’t have a concept of “Property”. A stick on the ground and a tool in a locked shed are equally up for grabs if a thing needs doing. They casually take and leave things all over their communities, eat from communal pots, and genuinely Do Not Understand why the Core Races are so Angry and prone to Violence all the time.
Consequently Goblins who live near Core communities develop a reputation as “Thieves” despite not even having a *word* for that. (The closest word they have is more like “Greedy” and it means a person that hides things so nobody else can use them, and it’s a surefire fight-starter to call a Goblin that)
Common Orc Spiritual beliefs hold that a Soul can only grow stronger by overcoming Challenges in life, and see intruding on another person’s Challenge unasked for as not just Rude, but Deeply Harmful. You’re Stealing their chance to Grow. Asking for help is deeply personal and doing so can be both a way to grow closer with them or a too-personal intrusion, depending on your existing relationship with them. An exception is Children, as far as most Orcs are concerned, all Children are fundamentally the responsibility of the Whole Community, regardless of whose child they are, or even if said child is an Orc at *all*.
This means that Orcs who live near Core neighbors often seem Rude and Standoffish if not outright hostile, because they neither ask for nor offer aid even in times of trouble, and respond to unasked for aid themselves with Anger. There are even rumors that they Steal Children, because if an Orc finds a child lost in the woods they’re pretty much immediately going to start feeding it, and if they can’t find where to bring it back to, or it doesn’t seem to be well cared for, they’re just gonna keep it.

A sudden, terrifying thought
When you see an animal with its eyes set to the front, like wolves, or humans, that’s usually a predator animal.
Tumblr media
If you see an animal with its eyes set farther back, though—to the side—that animal is prey.
Tumblr media
Now look at this dragon.
Tumblr media
See those eyes?
Tumblr media
They’re to the SIDE.
Tumblr media
This raises an interesting—and terrifying—question.
Tumblr media
What in the name of Lovecraft led evolution to consider DRAGONS…
As PREY?

some inns at the edge of the world:
Bed, Bask, and Beyond: made entirely of thick frosted glass; it’s damp and muggy inside, full of tropical plants, with heat lamps hanging from the ceiling. staffed entirely by lizardfolk and yuan-ti. you swear you hear live mice skittering around but the bartender hisses and you mind your own business.
Emerald Bay Inn and Resort: a stereotypical tropical hotel with spa, hiking tours, a private (nude?) beach, drinks served in a coconut husk, etc. located in the frozen tundra. penguins huddle for warmth near the sauna.
The Thrifty Shifter: a rickety-looking tavern run by three doppelgangers: Joe, Moe, and Bobo. Joe is eager to please, offering all the inn’s amenities and discounts–but he seems sleazy. Moe is a buffoonish fellow, endearing if a little exasperating. Bobo is clearly running the inn as a front for the Fantasy Mafia.
Briggs, Briggs, and Bridger: run by a polyamorous triad: Briggs and Briggs are an orc and a dwarf, respectively, while Bridger is an elf. their bed and breakfast hosts drag shows every other Friday night and their crepes are to die for.
The Nestled Trollhouse: tucked under a woodland bridge, the Nestled Trollhouse is run by one exhausted, overworked troll named Greg. His true passion is baking, and he is always trying out new chocolate-chip cookie recipes. Tastings are free of charge. They’re usually burnt.
Inn & Out: has a Fantasy Yelp page, everyone is talking about it, and the food is incredible–like, five Fantasy Michelin Stars–but it’s so popular it’s always booked solid. they have an open reservation for the honeymoon suite in eight months.
Wyrd Sisters Hotel and Casino: founded by a trio of witches five centuries ago, but you’re pretty sure no one with magical power actually runs the place anymore. the desk clerk offers to read your palm while you wait for the bellhop but she always predicts “big winnings in your future.” Each room is decorated with a different Major Arcana card motif.
(as always you can steal any of these and modify them however you like for your own campaign!)

Homebrew Distillery: Ocean Domain Cleric
Tumblr media
The sea brings to mind many contradictory images. It can be gentle waves lapping lazily at the sandy shore, or a bottomless pit of water ready to suck you under to the fathoms below. It can be a beautiful blue-green, or black as a kraken’s inky heart. It can be a bountiful provider of food and economy, or it can be a cruel impassable boundary that divides the people of the world. Gods of the sea tend to have very similar reputations. Capable of great serenity and destruction, of great beauty and heinousness, or of compassion and selfishness. Clerics of the Ocean Domain understand the sea’s constant back and forth nature, and respect both it’s beauty and its unpredictable ire.
1st Create or Destroy Water, Earth Tremor 3rd Gust of Wind, Misty Step 5th Tidal Wave, Wall of Water 7th Control Water, Watery Sphere 9th Cone of Cold, Maelstrom
Gift of the Depths
When you choose this domain at 1st level, you gain a swimming speed equal to your walking speed, and you can breathe both air and water.
Atlantean Weaponry
At 1st level, you gain proficiency with tridents, nets, javelins, and spears.
Channel Divinity: Fathoms Below
Beginning at 2nd level, you present your holy symbol. For 1 minute, you can create an aura of sea water within a 10 ft radius of you. This water hovers in a perfect sphere and is treated as Underwater, and creatures within the sphere apply the mechanics of underwater combat. If creatures cannot breathe underwater, they treat the aura like difficult terrain. Creatures with an innate swimming speed inside the aura can move freely at their normal swimming speed in any direction. As an action, you can cause the water in your aura to become turbulent. Creatures within your aura make a Strength saving throw against your spell save DC or take 2d8 bludgeoning damage and are pulled toward the center of the aura.
Catch and Release
When you reach 6th level, you can throw an enchanted net to snare another creature. As an action, you can cast Hold Monster at its lowest level without using a spell slot.
Divine Strike
Starting at 8th level, you gain the ability to infuse your weapon strikes with oceanic energy. Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can cause the attack to deal an additional 1d8 cold damage to the target. When you reach 14th level, the extra damage increases to 2d8.
Torrential Tides
Beginning at level 17, as an action, you can open a portal to the elemental plane of water, allowing water to rush out. Open the portal at a point you can see within 30 feet of you. The portal faces away from you, and creates a surge of water that is 30 feet wide, 10 feet thick, and 10 feet high. The deluge travels 40 feet in the direction you are facing away from you. Creatures in the path of the wave must succeed on a Strength saving throw against your spell DC or take 6d8 bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. On a successful saving throw, they take half damage and are not knocked prone. Regardless of their success with the saving throw, the tidal wave pushes all creatures in its path to the the end of the wave’s range. After this feature is used, the terrain becomes difficult due to the flooding. This feature can be used equal to your Wisdom modifier between long rests.

yes, I’m a DM, yes, I love writing, no, I don’t know how distance works. Is that building 100 feet away or 40 feet away? Should you be able to see something ten minutes down the road? Is 1,000 feet long? Is 30?? Is 6??? Could you walk across the continent in 2 weeks or 2 years? I hate this. I hate travel. I hate measurement. Fuck you.

okay i’m doing a thing again
reblog this with a picture of your oc (or reply with your oc’s tag) and i will draw them for a warmup.
however i will put my music playlist on shuffle and draw that oc for the duration of whatever song comes on.  when the song ends, i put the pen down.
so don’t expect good art.
(also i’m capping this at 10 for now so i don’t get a repeat of last time.)
(also also i’m only doing the ones with specific references provided.  i’m not digging through people’s blogs again looking for ocs lol)
