Something about Dan Schneider’s nonpology that really, really fucking bothered me as a tv worker is when he said “we filmed in a room full of adults and nobody said anything at the time.” As if there is ANY avenue for Randy Set Dec or Cam Op Number 2 to speak up if they have an opinion on a joke. Even on a “healthy” set! Crews are so hierarchical, and you’re trained to stay in your lane to such an extreme extent, there would be a very limited number of people on that set who would have the ability to give that feedback. Now add in the fact that it wasn’t a healthy set, and that number shrinks because now the very small amount of people who should have the power to say something are 1.) afraid to or 2.) also weird assholes or 3.) only care about the money.

And the reason that this specifically bothered me is that a showrunner knows this. He knows that there wasn’t a “room full of adults” who could have spoken up. He is banking on the people listening to his “apology” not knowing this, not knowing how extremely hierarchical sets are about that kind of thing, and shifting the blame to the other people around him. And don’t get me wrong — I’m sure there’s plenty of blame to go around. But him acting as if he doesn’t fully understand that the majority of the people in rooms with him did not have the ability to voice any kind of negative feedback is bullshit. He knew. Any person working in Hollywood knows that. Producers like Dan surround themselves with people who cannot give them negative feedback by design. It gives them power.
