People who have only seen the how to train your dragon movies: you have no idea how insane the books get
- The later books are mostly about slavery. Hiccup was enslaved for a whole book
- Dragons are almost all sapient beings with their own language that only hiccup speaks
- Some of the dragons are like eldrich gods that can see the future, have telepathy and live for centuries
- Alvin the treacherous has attempted genocide many many times
- Hiccup spends an entire book with a poisonous fang lodged in his arm; the dragon it came from tracks him down and tries to kill him
- Hiccup has killed dragons while being swallowed by them multiple times
- Detailed descriptions of how certain dragons will murderise anything they touch
- The dragon guarding one specific maguffin was a nightmare creature that had giant periscope hands with eyes on each finger that it used to see things on the surface of the desert then grab them and pull them down, then it preserves its meals by covering them in sand and melting it into glass
- Snotlout was shot in the chest with an arrow and died
- Toothless is a tiny baby dragon with no teeth but also one of the god dragons
- Hiccup’s mum has tried to kill him at least once
- The dragons declare war on humankind.
- I can’t find the full lyrics of the dragons’ war song but one of the lyrics is “run red your claws with human blood”

Plotlines, details and moments from the httyd books I would have LOVED to see in the movies/TV shows:
Hiccup and Snotlout being cousins PERIOD
I think it would have been SO funny if Sharpshot (Hiccup's Terrible Terror in Riders of Berk) actually acted like book Toothless and had book Toothless's book 1 arc of being disobedient and then saving Hiccup at the end
The dramatic sword fight that reveals Hiccup is left-handed
Hiccup inexplicably speaking perfect Latin and French as well as Norse
Fishlegs's lobster claw necklace. Where was the lobster claw necklace DreamWorks 💔
The quest to find the vegetable-that-should-never-be-named (aka The Great Potato Heist)
Hiccup's mom's ex showing up on Berk, becoming his bodyguard, and then immediately trying to kill him
Hiccup celebrating his "third" birthday
Hiccup and Co having to break into a heavily guarded library to steal another copy of a book Toothless ate
Participating in a swimming race where they swim in full battle gear and the winner is the last person back
Fishlegs writing an illegal love letter that Hiccup pretends he wrote (and proceeds to immediately become Engaged)
Fishlegs's entire character arc about who his parents were and being adopted and coming to love his found family and (LISTEN I JUST LOVE FISHLEGS OKAY)
Hiccup and Fishlegs being kidnapped together because someone said to "kidnap the heir to the Hooligan Tribe, he's the most pathetic looking boy in the group you can't miss him" and the kidnappers couldn't decide which boy looked more pathetic
(Just,, more instances of Hiccup being downright pathetic,, sopping wet cat of a boy 😂)

Also at least mention Grimbeard the Ghastly, Hiccup's ancestor who was once king of the entire archipelago and a fearsome pirate

Hiccup and the other vikings singing. That was so important to me
The absolute blatant fact that Hiccup was not only a runt but was an "accident" and his name "Hiccup" literally means "accident" and his parents were technically not supposed to keep him
I've got more but this post has already gotten pretty big 😂
