Today's motivational/emergency moth is the monkey slug moth, Phobetron hipparchia. It's a species of cup moth (Limacodidae) named after it's fantastic looking caterpillar, which you can see below. (I think cup moths as a group are named after the shape of their egg cases, it's not that they can't get by without tea or anything.)
Anyway... May this moth bring you joy today, may we one day achieve it's level of fluffy sass.
All the images are from the late Andreas Kay, whose work lives on via the extraordinary archive of pictures he gave us of Ecuador's wildlife. Find more of his pictures of this moth here.
a resonant cicada (Megatibicen resonans), doing what he does best... being really loud
resonans is the second-largest cicada in North America, surpassed only slightly by its close relative M. auletes, and i‘m pretty sure they’re some of the loudest out there as well
I’ve been seeing some WASP NEGATIVITY lately so just a reminder that insects are important and interesting whether you find them “cute” or not. Which btw wasps are cute actually but anyways… (also sorry for the US-centrism)
entomologists are the most fucking wild people ive ever met
i pointed out a cool wasp to one and she just picked it up with her bare hands and started showing me different features she was using to identify the species
on a walk with another one he just paused, turned, violently shoved his hand into some rotting wood and offered me a tunnel web spider like oh okay i guess-
