Fast-forward to the Ghostfaces - Stig tells Hal he wants to stay with Tecumsah and Hal just doesn't understand what he's saying for a sec because there is no way
I just love how, one day, Stig decides I am going to follow this kid to the end of the world and doesn't regret it once.

Is it me, or is the sinking of the Nightwolf a bit sketchy? Like we-are-gonna-fake-our-death-and-start-a-new-life-on-the-other-side-of-the-world-kind-of-sketchy?

I think that's the problem, tho - both of them are used to doing things alone. I think they are both gradually getting better as the story goes, but really, Lydia may be an important part of the team, but she usually works alone eventhough it's a part of the team plan. Jesper, on the other hand, usually works directly with the team, but I think his best moments in the books are those where he takes the responsibility and does something alone - kind of in Lydia's style (but better) - that's when he trully gets to shine
Something’s that’s been bothering me is that Flanagan seems to have completely forgotten about Jesper’s abilities.
In the first few books he is responsible for the sneaking and scouting missions. I’m especially talking about before the battle of Limmat. When him and Hal are preparing for the invasion, his abilities to be unseen is described similar to those of the rangers’s.
But then Lydia shows up and she takes over all scouting missions. Now, I’m not complaining about giving Lydia assignments (Flanagan’s inability to believe that she can be of any value to the crew when they are sailing is another rant).
But several times they want someone to go with her to “be the muscles” is case anything goes wrong. Most of the time that’s Hal. I understand he wants to survey the area because he’ll be the one to make the plans. But something Jesper should be the obvious choice.
Honestly, justice for Jesper whose main asset was forgotten after the second book.

As someone who’s worked on a lot of ships I actually love Flanagan’s description of what Edvin’s does on the ship
Having the medic and the chef be the same person is very common. Their job is about making everyone else able to do their job to the fullest of their ability.
They are an essential part of the crew. A common saying is that it’s even more important for the crew to stay on the chef’s good side than on the captain’s good side. Because if you don’t, they’ll make food that no one likes and it will demoralized everyone
(On a ship you live for your next meal)
Anecdotally, my watch once ended up annoying the chef and I have never been on a more miserable trip
I don’t know if this makes much sense to anyone else but me. But Edvin is very close to my heart and I just want everyone to know how important it is to have someone like him in your crew

Hi, anon! I can totally see where you are coming from! I am afraid that... it's a bit my doing... sorry for that. Anyway, almost all of BB headcanons started somewhere here on Tumblr and I think I can find most of them because, you know, I was there, Gandalf, 3,000 years ago... so don't be afraid to drop any BB related questions into my chat, I'll be glad to try to help!
The main surname post is here
but only a few of them are regularly used in the fandom. For Stef, you can often find two different surnames - both of them headcanon-related, and I like to think that both can be used in different circumstances - Hildegrassen (aka Hilde's grandson, because the fandom gave him (I think it was @thelastranger, correct me if I am wrong) a really badass grandmother. And Hafsaerling, this time because of a headcanon that his mom is a sirene (I can find those posts for you, if you'd like.)
Anyway, here is the fic that gave Jes his fandom surname:
I've been in the RA fandom for quite some time, but I prefer BB. But the problem with joining this fandom is all the characters that you people have made up (not in a negative way). For example in the RA fandom most of the posts are just about well known characters like will and halt. But I've been scrolling in the brotherband tag for maybe 30 minutes and I'm so confused. I don't recognize a lot of these names, you guys make content about the most minor characters ever and all the characters suddenly have last names that I didnt know existed. I mean no hate with this, just something I've noticed :p
Ah, hello there!
So... the made-up people and names and facts and headcanons and whatnot. Yes, yes; the liberties we take to help the Herons along.
Which specifically did you mean?
I'll start: Ansgar Leatherfist is my guy; he's a jeweler/metalsmith that I created so he could adopt Jesper, because that boy needs adoptin'.
The Herons have brand-new shiny last names courtesy of the Brotherband fandom here.
Thanks for the ask, Anon; we're all quite pleased to have you! Anyone else want to take this up?

"Mike, I swear, you have no idea what your kid is up to AGAIN -"
"I know, I know, I know, I deserve all the insults you are definitely throwing my way now, but I hope you saw the look on Erak's face because it was totally worth it. Anyway..."
"I taught Jes one of your tricks today. It took me a few tries to get it right. You know how I've never could switch the hands as quickly as it's needed, but he caught up quickly - "
"Gorlog, I bet you're so proud. I am. And I am dead sure Erak is. And don't even get me started on Svengal and the crew."
"Stefan heard somewhere one of your songs and played it at tonight's feast. It's changed over the years slightly, and he plays it slower than you did, but still -"
"I've been thinking about Karina. More than usual. And well, I think I should tell you before I tell Hal-"
headcanon i came up with like now - angst incoming, beware. everytime a skandian leaves their crew willingly, they take their shield with them. however, when a crew member dies, their shield stays hanging along the side of the ship, nobody ever repainting it, the colours cracking and slowly peeling off until a new member steps up in their place and the shield is replaced by a different one. the old shield is then hung in the great hall of hallasholm alongside many others. the wall behind some of them is bare and empty, but most of them hide letters for their bearers written by their loved ones
