Wellbeing Wednesday: Tall Poppy Syndrome
Have you heard of the phrase Tall Poppy Syndrome?
According to Wikipedia it is “the cultural phenomenon of jealous people holding back or directly attacking those who are perceived to be better than the norm, ‘cutting down the tall poppy’. It describes a draw towards humility”. It is a term commonly used in Australia and New Zealand
This is a syndrome which can affect a workplace due to it’s negative effect on employees through either “harsh criticism of any performer, or celebrating the downfall of someone whom many might consider to be a cut above the rest.” Also according to Human Resources Director here are signs of tall poppy syndrome in the workplace.
Employees who feel they are being judged severely for simply doing their job should look for the following signs of TPS among their colleagues:
Criticism over minor details
Social exclusion
Downplaying other people’s achievements
Jealousy manifested in snide remarks
According to Well+Good the person afflicted may feel like it’s a personal attack but in reality the issue is about projection, triggering feelings of inadequacy, insecurity, fear, jealousy, and anger that lead to the desire to cut others down. Knowing this fact the it isn’t personal doesn’t make dealing with people’s unkind comments or behaviour any easier. So Well+Good have shared 6 pieces of advice for how to handle a bout of tall poppy syndrome, which I am sharing below
1. Practice compassion toward others
Because tall poppy syndrome comes about as a result of the people who are trying to dim your light, Dr. Humphreys says it’s important to cultivate and practice compassion toward others. “It comes from a place of deep hurt, pain, neglect, unworthiness, and suffering,” she says. “They are not happy within themselves or comfortable in their own skin. Allow them to be themselves as they are today, and strive to love them, no matter what.”
2. Remove yourself from harm
“Remember: Being compassionate does not mean availing yourself to being someone’s punching bag,” Dr. Humphreys says. That’s why, if you’re in this type of situation, she advises removing yourself from it and ending contact with the person or people.
3. Do what makes you happy—no matter what
Don’t let the naysayers stop you from going after your dreams and desires. You can decide to not let them bring you down. “Do the thing you want to do, and then no matter what happens from there, you can be proud you followed through on your big calling,” Parker says.
4. Gather a support squad
To keep your spirits high when others are trying to tear you down, ensconce yourself in a group of people who are distinctly different from who you are. “Surround yourself with amazing people who love, support, and honor you for who you are—well beyond your achievements or what you do,” Parker says. “They can make all the difference at times when others are being unkind.”
5. Don’t waste energy fighting back
Your energy is a finite resource, and when it comes to haters, critics, and toxic people, most of the time, it’s just not worth your time and effort to fight back, argue, or try to defend yourself. “Your time is better spent just getting on with the business of being you and creating your great work in the world,” Parker says.
6. Remember, it’s out of your control
The way others react or perceive you and your accomplishments is beyond your control. Your only job, Parker says, is to do what lights you up and share it with the world, regardless of what others may think or how it makes them feel.
And, even if you were to give in by dimming your light to avoid outshining others, doing so won’t necessarily protect you from critics, either. “We can hide, and people may still criticize us for doing so,” Parker says. “There is always the potential that critics will criticize; however, there is the same potential that people will love, support, and cheer us on.”
Have you been effected by Tall Poppy Syndrome? Or have you ever dismissed someone else’s accomplishments? What advice would suggest to help other people. Email me at [email protected]

Wellbeing Wednesday: OCD
Wellbeing Wednesday: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
One of the core beliefs of Brighton Bricks is how play is good for our mental health, for ur wellbeing. I also believe we need to be more open about our mental health, which is why I will regular post about mental health issues and putting a spotlight on disorders to help start a conversation. If you have any ideas or suggestion for Wellbeing Wednesday posts let me know at [email protected]. This week I am looking at Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD for short.
You will have obsessions, compulsion or both if you have OCD
Obsession. An obsession is an unwelcome thought or image that you keep thinking about and is largely out of your control. These can be difficult to ignore. These thoughts can be disturbing, which can make you feel distressed and anxious.
Compulsion. A compulsion is something you think about or do repeatedly to relieve anxiety. This can be hidden or obvious. Such as saying a phrase in your head to calm yourself. Or checking that the front door is locked
How can I get help and treatment?
See your GP, and
Get talking therapy by contacting your local NHS talking therapy service
You can download a Factsheet about OCD from ReThink Mental Illness

Best LEGO Sets of 2020 - The Competition Begins!
What has been your favourite LEGO set of 2020?
I thought I attempt to see what people think, especially as 2020 has been a challenging year
So how am I going to do this?
According to Brickset (one of the best LEGO sites!) over 785 ‘sets’ were released, which i think would be a bit too big a selection, so I decided to go for the top 128 sets rated according to Brickset’s overall rating (I did exclude a few things like Polybags and CMF so we could include as many sets as possible) (Date of rating was 31st October 2020)
How is this going to work?
Each of the 128 sets will be matched against another set, and polls will be occurring on our Facebook page to decide which ones you prefer, and then that set goes to the next round. Sets will be ranked and as in any good competition, we will be creating the matchups according to rankings, i.e ranked 1 vs ranked 128, 2, vs 127 etc. This will keep going on until we are left with just two sets and then one will be picked as best set of 2020 (as according to Brighton Bricks!!)
As we will be going along, I will keep updating this page with Brickset links for details about the sets, as well as details on what votes are coming up, and the results of previous votes etc.
What sets are we including?
So the 128 sets are
Mandalorian Battle Pack - Brickset Link
Golden Mech

One slight issue is the volume of storage inside the bins is slightly smaller than first impressions of the outside. I have several of these bags, and it makes tidying up very easy. I also use these bags for my LEGO & DUPLO workshops as it helps really easy to transport the bricks. https://amzn.to/3kVorwo
Really Useful Boxes
Really Useful make a wide range of storage boxes in different sizes, very useful to storing and organising your LEGO. Especially the 16 x 0.14 Litre Container, which is very useful if you need find something to store all of those small pieces

Chestnut Tree House Wish List
Chestnut Tree House Wish List
One of the charities we supported with out #brightonbricksbuild challenges was Chestnut Tree House, a Sussex based charity providing hospice care services and community support for children and young people with progressive life-shortening conditions.
They care for 300 children and young adults from 0-19 years of age, both at the hospice and in families’ own homes. They
The charity have a wish list on Amazon, where the gifts will go to help the children, young people and families cared for by the hospice
On this list is a lot of LEGO items, and I think it would be cool if people could support Chestnut Tree and buy stuff for the kids.
I am thinking of some fundraising ideas to help raise money to buy some LEGO. If you have any ideas let me know.
If you like to know more about Chestnut Tree House visit their website

We have had two series of Disney CMF so far but there are so many characters which haven’t been made. So here is what I would love to see in a series 3. I have no idea if LEGO will ever make a series 3 though.
What figures would you like to see in a series 3? Or let me know what Disney LEGO sets would you like to see?

This challenge is done in partnership with Sussex Wildlife Trust
Sussex Wildlife Trust are a conservation charity for everyone who cares about nature in Sussex. Focus on protecting the wonderfully rich natural life that is found across our towns, countryside and coast.

#BrightonBricksBuild LEGO Board Games
#BrightonBricksBuild LEGO Board Games
Challenge
Find ways of combing board games & LEGO either by creating LEGO version of board games, or use LEGO pieces replacing board games pieces
This challenge is done in partnership with Dice Saloon, a board games shop / cafe in Brighton, and where we had our first ever Lego show back in 2017. Four of us got a couple of tables together showing our Lego displays and it was great to see so many people come along to the show. The highlight was the Lego modular MOC with modular sets and custom build modulars all together.
For me board games and Lego go so well together, so it was a no brainer we did our first show at Dice Saloon, and it has been great to see how they have expanded over years and with their new venue on London Road hopefully opening this year, it is a great time to be a boardgames fan in Brighton
Due to the lockdown and the fact they were in the process of moving locations they are not able to operate either physically or online button so they have a Pay Not To Play Support Donation

LEGO Helping Through Play. Mental Health Awareness Week 2020
LEGO Helping Through Play: Mental Health Awareness Week 2020
This week it is Mental Health Awareness Week, and one of the reasons I set up Brighton Bricks was how LEGO helps me with my mental health problems, and I know play can be a really important way of keeping a positive mental health wellbeing. We have done several events for previous mental health days (photos below)
If anyone is having mental health issues, I wanted to share a few links with useful information, which hopefully will help. One of the main things to remember is to talk, and not be silent. Talk to a friend, family member, or contact a organisation like The Samaritans, just talk.
For me personally I love LEGO as it helps me with my anxiety issues, it calms me down when I follow instructions. And that is also why I love LEGO as there is no wrong way to build, some people are set builders and enjoy seeing something being created step by step, and others are free builders, creating their own masterpieces and MOCS. You deal with LEGO the way you feel the most comfortable.
So here is some useful mental health information
