As a huge Rex fan, 4 seasons has been one of my favorite songs ever since I heard Apricot Princess. I would even go as far as saying that it’s the best song he’s ever released. The track takes you on a roller coaster of emotions, and you can feel Rex attempting to dig himself out of his depression.
The song starts out slow and mellow with an intro verse that is composed of just his voice and light background electronic notes. In the beginning, Rex is questioning himself and his identity, unsure of who he is though his friends have seemed to figure it out. He finishes the short, spoken-word-like verse with one of my favorite lines, giving the listener a glimmer of hope for Rex’s situation:
“Even though I’m a walking emotion, and I can’t go a day without you. I saw myself as less, but you so high above me, but I hope that you can learn to love me.”
I fucking love this line. This line highlights Rex’s insecurities in his relationship, and gives context to his depression that he detailed in the beginning. Rex is so worried, frustrated, and just an overall emotional wreck. He sees this girl (likely referring to his longtime girlfriend, Thea) as the key to getting him out of this horrible phase of his life, and thus he is just hoping that she feels the same way. He just wants her love. At this point in the song, the strings come in and bass line come in, as Alex raises his voice.
After this verse, the strings crescendo and cut rapidly, as Alex continues into his second verse. Here, he adopts another quiet, sad sound, this time with a faster cadence, almost like he’s rapping but not really. By the middle of the verse, the bass is back and the drums finally kick in. Alex mentions that his girl has made him less awkward and he can’t wait to see her. Things are definitely looking up for him.
The second half of this song is a lot more upbeat and a mix between positive and negative, as Rex compares his relationship with Thea to the loss of his grandfather. Throughout, he repeatedly says the line, “But if only he’d remember my name one final time.” This is referring to the idea that he wishes his grandfather would’ve remembered him before he passed away, as he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
Rex is saying that the likelihood of his relationship with his significant other eventually ending is guaranteed (whether it be by breaking up, death, etc….), and this “frightens” him. But, in the same vein, he realizes that he can’t hide/prevent this ending because, like he says, everything eventually dies whether it be people (aka the passing of his grandfather) or relationships.
I absolutely love this comparison; it is completely unexpected and therefore so creative and does an amazing job of comparing past and the present in life. Alex’s songwriting ability definitely shines here, as well as his creativity in by not following the typical verse 1, chorus, verse 2 chorus song format. All in all, amazing song where you can truly feel like you are with Rex on his emotional journey.
If you enjoy this song, some other songs I would recommend are…
No. Taylor Swift is not a slut, Selena Gomez CAN sing, Lady Gaga is not a creep, Katy Perry is not a flop, Ariana Grande DOES look like a woman and IS a woman not a child, Demi Lovato is not a crackhead, Beyonce is not annoying, Halsey is not a whore, Billie Ellish is not problematic, Adele is not a fat whale, Rihanna is not ugly, Lana Del Rey is not over party, Nicki Minaj is not cancelled, Cardi B is not a copycat. Stop criticizing and attacking female singers. Stop sexism. Feel free to add more.
