Understanding and Choosing Oriental Design Rugs for Your Home
Oriental rugs are a great way to add personality to your home, and they can also be an asset—financially and otherwise. Many people have no idea about choosing rugs, however, and that’s a dangerous way to make any purchase. Read on for a primer on oriental design rugs and discover what to look for when you’re choosing one.
Persian vs. Oriental Carpets
A lesser-known fact about Oriental rugs is that only those made in Persia (now called Iran) actually qualify to be called real “Persian carpets.” Even though all Oriental carpets are not Persian, all Persian rugs are Oriental, so it’s a distinction you need to take note of. There are lots of other types of oriental designs, too, which are usually named after the towns and areas where the design originated many centuries ago. Real, authentic Oriental rugs can be made anywhere in Asia, but the majority come from the following countries: 1. Iran 2. China 3. India 4. Russia 5. Turkey 6. Pakistan 7. Tibet 8. Nepal The big question facing most buyers of Oriental rugs is whether they are authentically woven in the East or simply a reproduction.
How Rugs are Made
A real, handmade Oriental carpet is created by weaving wool, cotton or silk threads horizontally on a loom. The vertical strands that support the knots are called the warp, and after knotting the threads around the warp a tool called a weft is used to compact the strands together and keep the knots in place. The greater the number of knots per square inch, the finer the weave of the rug. The loose ends are usually left to create a fringe. Designs are inspired by the surroundings and everyday life, or cultural scenes and patterns. It takes months and years to weave a single rug, which is not only uniquely beautiful but practical and very durable.
A Reproduction May Look as Good
Imitation products are called Oriental-style rugs, and these are often factory- or machine-made using synthetic fibers and chemical dyes. They are much faster to manufacture and require less human labor, which makes them far more affordable. It can be difficult to distinguish a machine-made rug from a handmade Oriental reproduction, and Karastan carpets are particularly well-made. These were the first American-made, Persian-style products available, and initially used natural dyes and imported wool from Iran. The quality of materials resulted in the first-generation Karastan rugs becoming collectible items today. While Karastan no longer imports wool from Asia, it still makes use of high quality products.
Knot Count and Quality
The knot count of an Oriental rug tells the buyer how much work went into creating the piece. When you’re purchasing a new rug, one with 300 knots is considered a better quality and will be more expensive than one with only 200 knots. The more expensive rugs, both handmade and machine-made, typically use better grades of wool, good designs and coloration and colors that work well together and are pleasing to the eye. This affects the value of new rugs only, not pre-owned or vintage rugs.
Assessing the Value
Just because Oriental rugs are old, it doesn’t mean they carry a high intrinsic value. For vintage rugs, the resale value is determined by the age and condition, whether it is suitable for restoration, the rareness of the design and how well it works with modern furniture. Currently, popular investment rugs are those with large-scale and overall patterns, even if they don’t have a fine or intricate weave, the Turkish Oushaks, with their pale shades and large patterns, and bold geometrics with primary colors. Recently, there’s also a swing in interest to new, monochromatic rugs with minimal designs that are made in India, Pakistan and Turkey. Caring for Hardwood Floors in Summer
There’s a reason hardwood flooring is consistently the most popular and sought-after flooring choice. It’s beautiful, it’s durable, and it gives your home a kind of elegance and warmth that no other kind of flooring comes close to.
Like so many other beautiful, natural products, however, hard wood floors need to be protected, taken care of and maintained. If you’re wondering what you can do with hardwood floors in summer to keep them in pristine condition for years and decades to come, read on.
Sand Is Bad
If your summer activities include trips to the beach, then you will need to take precautions to keep the sand between your toes, and off your floors.
Sand, if left to accumulate on wooden floors, will literally sandpaper the finish off them in places. So, the key is to keep the sand off the floors as much as possible, and to clean it up as soon as possible if it does find its way into your home.
Tumblr media
To sand-proof hardwood floors in summer, do the following:
Make sure sandy shoes are taken off in your mud room, or in an entrance area. Then store them in a closet or a box where the sand that falls off them will be contained.
If sand does find its way onto your floors, vacuum it as soon as possible. Even a few grains can scratch up your floor badly.
Place mats that will catch and trap sand at entrances where foot traffic is likely to track sand into your home.
Damp Is a No-No
If the sand on your shoes is accompanied by dampness, your hardwood floors might suffer even more.
Whether it’s some sea water on your feet after a trip to the beach, or just summertime humidity, wooden floors do not like too much moisture. Not only can sustained exposure to moisture leave marks on your floors (like coffee mug rings on a table), but constant exposure to humidity can cause floors to cup or crown, which is an unevenness in the boards themselves.
In most cases, cupping and crowning resolves itself when the humidity drops, but you can try fans to circulate air, or if you have it, air conditioning, to remove some of the dampness from the air.
Floors that are moisture stained or damaged however might need professional treatment, so if you haven’t been careful, contact a pro to get the problem fixed before it gets worse.
Sun Damage and Wooden Floors
It’s the other part of the beach trifecta: sun. Aside from sand and water, the other big danger for your wooden floors in summer is sun. If you want to protect your hardwood floors in summer, you should keep the sun off it.
Just like UV rays can damage skin, fade paint and singe plants, the sun’s rays can do a lot of damage to wooden floors.
The simplest way to prevent this kind of damage to your floors is to keep your drapes closed when there is direct sunlight on your floors.
When in Doubt, Ask the Pros
Caring for wooden floors can be tricky and doing the wrong thing can be an expensive mistake. If you have any doubt about the care of your hardwood floors in summer (or any other time of the year!), it’s best to speak to a flooring professional. They’ll be able to steer you in the right direction for maintenance, care and even repair. Quality wood floors are worth the cost, as long as you keep them in the best possible condition.
