CritRoleStats Announcement, November 2023

After 8 years of pouring our hearts into our work and being one of the premier sources of third-party Critical Role information from live play-by-plays to collected data sets to digestible lore to encounter strategies to any other random fancies that crossed us, this will be the final quarter of CritRoleStats. As of January 2024, our team will say goodbye to the site and all the responsibilities we’ve taken on. We’re all completionists at heart, but despite our stubbornness, there was always a point where we had to recognize when we were ready to move on.

2023 isn’t over yet, though, and we’re still going to be hard at work throughout the rest of the year. Here’s what we’re doing, and what our future plans entail.

Four of them go by chosen names. Beau’s dad wanted her to be a boy, and is disappointed that she isn’t. Fjord remade his personality to mimic the only father-figure in his life. The two strongest people in the party are both girls. The person with the long pink hair and undercut and teal/pink mushroom aesthetic has the deepest voice in the party by a COUNTRY MILE. Caleb grew his hair long and shaved his beard as soon as he felt it was safe enough. Mollymauk Tealeaf is there.

I know this is really only relevant to me and a few others, but I do think it's functionally hilarious that widobrave has been left off of ship polls for not being shippy enough and simultaneously left off of platonic polls for being too shippy. they are truly schrodinger's ship. the ship is in the eye of the beholder and NO ONE can agree

Endless TLOVM

Know some people may not agree but I do honestly prefer the line being ‘my heart is someone else’s’ over it being something along the lines of ‘my heart is my own’. Obviously, massive shipping-bias disclosure, but I feel it also works very well from a character standpoint. I’ve already rambled here about how refusing Saundor’s deal based on a love she believes is unrequited represents Vex placing value in her feelings and thereby herself. I just realised, though, that while a ‘I don’t need to give my heart to anyone’ line would work to assert that this character is an independent woman who has value outside of who she loves, from an in-story perspective, that’s never been Vex’s struggle.

Sure, she and Vax are very overly-reliant on each other and need to outgrow that, but that’s a mutual thing and her being willing to give her heart to someone else is a sign of growth in that regard. Vex loves very deeply and struggles to let attachments go (see: her relationship with Vax, her still being so affected by Syngorn years later, taking in Trinket, her grief at losing the Keep) because of that, she doesn’t let herself get attached because she’d just be giving whoever it is the power to hurt her. She literally says ‘Nobody likes needing someone’ to Scanlan in ep85. It’s not exactly uncommon to see people with self-worth issues try too hard to be independent, especially when those insecurities come from past experience of not being respected. I don’t know if that’s excatly what Vex has got going on, she’s not exactly afraid to let people know she relies on Vax and she doesn’t lancer it up going off by herself. But, if she’d asserted her heart was her own, even while saying that she is worth more than Saundor she’d be leaning more towards that impulse to isolate in the same way he does.

By admitting she loves someone in front of her friends, in front of the person she’s talking about, she’s making herself vulnerable, opening up further when she’s already been torn into. She needs agency and control over her own life, to be respected, to not be around creepy, manipulative archfey, so she needs to reject him for her own well-being. She also needs to be loved, cared about, and treated well. In that moment, she struggles to accept either of those things, because ‘need’ and ‘deserve’ often feel abstract and it’s easy to trick oneself into believing certain things need to be earned. But Vex is very familiar with wanting, with being considered a bad person because of how much she wants; and, in this moment, when she’s had her heart, soul, and memories carved through to display just how awful she is, she might as well admit to this love that’s been building secretly in her heart. She needs and wants connection, and by admitting to that she stops herself falling down the same path as Saundor.
