Mobile Song Process
I made this song through the garageband app in which I used my tablet (ipad) to create.
Using Garageband through an Ipad rather than a latop like usual, felt so abnormal and I wasn’t used to it, but a challenge is a challenge! So.. I took on to try it and I ended up liking it more than my laptop. ooops...
So after toggling with the app for a while I decide the approach I was going to take:
I went on to select, “Live Loops,” rather than tracks. I felt that this was an awesome way to approach a new song. It was also the best option to me due to the fact that I felt I had more freedom to choose which beats I wanted to use. And rather than listening through loops like on a laptop, they narrowed it down to specific EDM styled beats. (live track genre I chose)
When making the track, I was able to record a free style of beats; which i listened to multiple times prior to recording. So the beats I used are:
1. Big Room Kick
2.Big Room Topper 02 & 03
3. Big Room Snare 02 & 03
4. Blue Skies Pluck Lead
5. New Day Synth Lead 03
6. Deeper Meaning Bass 01
7. Boomer FX 11
8. Festival Kick 10
9. Together Forever Topper
9. Daybreak Beach Pluck Lead
10. We’re Together Synth Arp
11. New Day Synth Lead 03
12. New Day Chord Layers
13. Magnus
What I loved about using Live Loops was it made me feel like a DJ when making my song. I was able to choose beats from cells and click on them to play whenever I felt they should come in (practically free styling it.)
This was a fun and cool new experience. Probably one of my best yet.
I also messed around with the compressor on a few of the tracks and the track volumes as well.

Self Remix Process
I remixed my first project ever for this class which was called “Just Vibe.”
I always felt as if my song needed a little extra that would get people in a mood to well... just vibe. (punny I know). SO, in order for it to have a better and more head bumping vibe I made a few minor and one major change.
Minor changes:
1. I got rid of Beyond Deep Beat and Heatseeker Synth Layer in multiple sections by cutting the loop short, then pasting it back up later on.
2. I added a subtle loop called, Moving On Droning Bass.
Major Changes:
1. I added two new loops to the song that are super noticeable they’re called, “Bell Ringer Beat” and “Anthem Fever Synth. I added these in place of Heatseeker Synth and Beyond Deep in certain sections
By adding these two it gave the song a twist and even a more EDM feel (specifically Anthem Fever Synth, which I love)
Overall, I would say compared to the original I made, I would rather hear dance and bump to this one.

Sample ethics
Q; Do you think that sampling without permission is morally acceptable? If so, why? If not, why not?:
A; I believe that sampling without someone’s permission is not morally acceptable. Reason being that the person who created the sample took much time and effort to do it, for someone to come in and use it in their own way without permission to then be praised for it is wrong. Although they might alter it in a better way and get more recognition than the original use of the sample, it isn’t fair for the person who first used it. They should give credit where it’s due.

Peer Remix Documentation
For my peer remix i used Emma’s original track called, “Brooklyn Nights.” I chose this song because when I listened to it I loved the vibe it brought. It sounded very magical and I felt like I was surrounded by a bunch of twinkling lights (if that even makes sense).
I did keep some loops that she had but removed one or two (dub step loop was one).
The alterations I made weren’t too many or too extravagant since I thought the song was great already. So the alterations I made were.....
- changed the intro by adding “bending wah guitar” to start off the song with the “sharp dressed bass”
- cut off most of the “moving on bell lead” edits she made and filled them in with “bending wah guitar”, and “Crystal pad.esi” [deep electric piano 1] : which were two loops I added in
- I also added in “pop champagne harp” & “pop champagne stabs” to add a cool strings affect
- removed a loop she had cut called “ dub step”
These are the few I can remember although I did make a few more obvious or recognizable changes. I had fun remixing her song (Emma Patrimonio’s, “Brooklyn Nights”) and thought this was a cool project.

Sample Genealogy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19sAewJH22I1. A song I encountered that has a sample of another song is “Mask Off,” by rapper Future (also one of my favorite songs to bump to even though it curses). The sample in this song comes from, “Prison Song,” by Tommy Butler featuring Carlton Williams. The sample from Prison song was introduced into Future’s track at 0:12 and keeps playing throughout the entire song given that it is the beat for Future’s track. In Prison Song, it is also the beat throughout the entire song. It is clearly sped up for the purpose of it being a fast paced rap song, but you can clearly hear the sample and that it came from Prison Song.

2. Beatles thought they could sneak in lyrics to their song while referring another one of their songs without us catching on.. those tricky guys. Sadly they failed HAHAHAHA. They mentioned a title to their famous song, “Lucy in the Sky [With Diamonds],” in their lyrics for, “I am The Walrus.” They say
“Mister City, policeman sitting Pretty little policemen in a row
See how they fly like Lucy in the Sky, see how they run
I'm crying, I'm crying I'm crying, I'm crying”
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upeMmis6eQE : lucy in the sky
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19sAewJH22I : i am the walrus

Found Sound Song Documentation:
During the process of this song, I tried to combine loops and one or two found sounds that would sound fun and have a good vibe with each other.
The sounds I chose for this project were:
- clock ticking on a snowstorm (classmate’s found sound- Krystelle’s)
- big maracas 02 (love the sound of maracas)
-maracas topper
-left coast piano
-cool sidestep bass
-brixton lights lead guitar
-80′s back beat 01
-blizz (classmate’s found sound- mariana’s)
I decided not to go with my own found sound with this project because I wanted to explore my options and put other’s found sounds into a fun and enjoyable medley.
For this song process, I chose the instruments or use of guitar, bass and a little piano with the maracas to give it a rock yet latin american feel. Also by creating a master track and editing the compression and eq of the song it helped in making my loops sound balanced or even with each other. That way, no sound was louder or stood out more than the others and you are able to hear every instrument clearly.
By having the song start with this mysterious ticking sound, I believe it made it surprising or anxious to find out what was coming which was the maracas. By adding a clapping beat after the maracas gave it more of a dancing vibe to the song. The piano gave those two sounds an extra striking sound or feel. Then by finally adding the bass and lead guitar sounds with the blizz found sound it made it all sound great making the musical context a nice fun vibe.
Given I don’t know much about how compression or EQ even function/work, I still believe with all the effort and love put into it, my song was a success.

Production Analysis
As you can probably tell by now, I am a big fan of Ed Sheeran and his music. The song I chose for this post is, “,” which is a love ballad of course (classic Ed) that has the power to make anyone have the urge to burst into tears and sing along to at the top of their lungs!
This song uses different kind of sound sources to help it all come together nicely. The song starts off with an acoustic instrument or in other terms a guitar. Then suddenly Ed’s vocals come in as he begins to sing the song. This combination of vocals and acoustic instrument continue until 0:31. Then at 0:32 the drums kick in and we hear the combination of a drum and cymbal along with the guitar and Ed’s vocals. This continues until 0:53, when a piano (or what sounds like an electrical keyboard to me) is beginning to come in. Now all 4 of these sound sources are playing a beautiful melody together. At 2:14 the background vocals begin to play lowly in the background. Throughout the song as a whole, Ed’s voice seems to be the sound source that is the loudest and overpowers every other sound. The great thing about this song is that these same instruments are being used throughout the whole song, keeping it balanced and “collected.” I do not believe that this song used any samples or synthesizers given the fact that there were no crazy or impossible beats that any musician could not play live. I believe it was recorded using live instruments in a studio.
The producer of this track is Jake Gosling, who has worked with many artists and has been producer of several of Ed’s songs.

Real vs Hyperreal vs surreal:
1. Realistic Recording: “Shape of you” - Ed Sheeran Live @ Grammys
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPvARJW_iVI
- What makes this song sound so realistic is the fact that Ed Sheeran is standing on a stage at a famous award show and playing instruments and singing all on his own, with a machine that plays the loops so he can accomplish this “one man act.” He does not use any previously recorded sounds or background sounds recorded prior to the show. It all occurs in his live performance.
2. Hyper Realistic Recording: “Can’t Help Falling In Love” - Hailey Reinhart
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZkih54evUs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZeU7S2xKpA
-What makes this song sound realistic although most likely practiced over and over and recorded in a studio, is her voice and someone accompanying her on the piano, playing the music, as she sings into the microphone. The thing that makes it sound manipulated is how perfect or practiced it sounds. If this were live you would be able to point out a little flaw here and there compared to a beautiful and well practiced recording such as this one.
3. Surrealist Recording: “Only One” - Kanye West
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WibQR0tQ0P8
-What makes this song sound like it was definitely not recorded live is that fact that Kanye’s voice is auto tuned and fixed up. In the video (2:02) we hear Kanye singing as the vocals that were recorded continue to play. His singing sounds completely different than the one he has recorded using technology to make it sound much more pleasing to listen to. I would still love the song if it were created live with acoustic instruments, but the vibe or message the song conveys wouldn’t have the same feeling or ring to it. I would not be as interested in it if it were performed live using acoustic instruments.

MIDI experiment
My MIDI came from a website (http://www.midiworld.com/files/); where you are able to download so many different MIDI for free! The software instruments used were mainly drums and a bass. I chose these to give my song (using MIDI from B or W by Michael Jackson a continuous rock feel that it already has). I believe the end wasn’t that great and that with more time and experience I could definitely make it sound so much better. I would add vocals and a little more sounds effects as well.

Groove Pizza Experience
https://apps.musedlab.org/groovepizza/?source=pub&museid=rJv9Q1dtx
This is the beat I have created. I chose the trial and error process and messed around with the genres and BPM (which is supposed to be 84 not 124, it won’t stay at 84 no clue why).. But I believe it belongs in the genre of rock.

My first time using Garageband wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. When making song 1, I chose five loops that appealed to me. These were (beyond deep beat, heatseeker synth layers, contrails bass, afterburner synth lead, and aftershock synth lead). The reason behind me choosing such loops is because they gave me a nice vibe and got my head to bop up and down the minute I started playing them. I thought of making the structure with a short intro then slowly introducing other loops into the song, then in the middle have almost every loop come together. I then there began to take away one loop at a time to end with one loop, a different one than in the intro. I do feel this is a legitimate form of creativity. Although we didn’t create the sound of the loops themselves (already offered to us), we are able to put those loops into different orders or use them with other different loops to create a song other might like (besides yourself).

Song Structure Analysis:
Song: Warriors
Artist: Imagine dragons
Intro: ( 0:01-0:08) [measures 1-4]
Verse 1: (0:09-0:33) [measures 5-20]
Chorus 1: (0:34-0:57) [measures 21-36]
Verse 2: (0:58-1:22) [measures 37-52]
Chorus 2: (1:23-1:47) [measures 53-69]
Break: (1:48- 2:11) [measures 70-84]
Chorus 3: (2:12-2:37) [measures 85-100]
Outro: (2:38-2:50) [measures 101-106]
The song, “Warriors,” by the famous and incredible (also my favorite) band Imagine Dragons, uses the most common song structure.. This structure is the ABABCB structure. This mean it starts with a verse (often short to quickly introduce the chorus) which then continues to the chorus, then another verse, then the chorus again, a bridge or break in the song, then the chorus one last time, and finally the outro of the song. The ABABCB structure is most popular especially in this century’s way of writing music. Although it does have the structure of a pop song that you normally hear every day, this song is filled with powerful beats and vocals that can just simply get you stirred up in the moment. It makes even the most basic of structures sound amazing.
