Remove this comment if you want to, I apologize for ranting, but I feel the need to explain myself. Arya’s like 10 so I get that it’s totally not okay to ship her with a freaking grown man at this stage, even if it is Game of Thrones and weird, non-traditional pairings are all over the place.
That said, THIS PART OF THE SHOW KILLED ME ON SO MANY LEVELS and the undeniable and downright absurd level of chemistry these two had was, in my opinion, the most engaging aspect of season 2.
Jaqen is a Faceless Man. Faceless Men are meant to have no emotion, no identity, no attachments. But (first gif) he does a pretty crappy job of disguising his disappointment when, after he’s gone out of his way to find her on the road, she so hesitantly turns down his offer to travel with him to Braavos. NOT BECAUSE HE’S SOME PEDOPHILE CREEPER MAN . Quite the opposite. He’s chivalrous and polite, even kind, despite being an assassin. I think why he takes an interest in her is that he sees something very special in her–potential and determination. He knows that he has the knowledge and the skills that she wants, and he could teach it all to her.
And Arya wants to go with him, because he’s kind of everything she wishes she could be. There’s an element of frictional power struggle to their interactions (another thing I find so fascinating: she’s a ten-year-old kid but she manages to outwit him, and have a great enough effect on him that he kills Ser Amory when she wants him to and convinces him to help her escape Harrenhal, but I digress)….where was I? Oh yes, at times their relationship is a little bit tense, but when all was said and done, Jaqen made her brave again. She is clearly upset (second gif) when he tells her he must leave. In the book, she resents him for leaving her but can’t quite convince herself to get rid of the coin he had given her because it’s a connection to him. She wants to find him again, even though she’s angry with him. He was protection for her and he gave her courage and power.
