I feel like in Poland he’s really an indie author. I’ve got lots of friends who are bookworms and read a lot of fantasy but only 3 of them have read some of his books. Or at least that was until last year when I convinced 2 more to read it.
But yea especially in English-speaking countries his fandom is one of the biggest. Even in Poland almost everything he wrote is published in polish too. Maybe except some shorter stories - idk if mistborn secret story is in polish?
I think it’s a really interesting phenomenon that a lot of the Sanderson fandom (especially the more toxic sides of it) considers itself this like niche, quirky little fandom that has to campaign constantly and get after people who criticize the books and just behave like they’re a groupie of a small indie band.
When the reality is that Brandon Sanderson is one of the top selling fantasy authors of our time. He broke kickstarter. He has his own company and can throw his weight around as an author to get things done. He has a two day convention just for himself.
The Sanderson fandom is not niche. It’s not little. He’s not an obscure indie author.
And it’s fascinating to me that people pretend that’s not the case a lot.
