     IF SHE THOUGHT HER  actual father had a bit of a distasteful role in life, she couldn’t have predicted the being that would take her under his wing being a hundred times worse. blood became a daily part of life she aimed to avoid, disgust twisted her stomach every time she caught a glimpse of an unfavorable scene.

     she often doubted if he could care at all. while not human herself, she did hold humanity. although he must have cared, at least a little bit. or maybe he just wanted an apprentice and cared not for her well-being, and that was why he’d done something akin to adopting the spirit. whatever the reason, she wasn’t expecting a hand on her back when the closest thing to tears she could manage soaked her cheeks. it wasn’t a big deal, just a simple bullying stunt by some other students that thought her peculiar or found enjoyment in pushing her shy nature. but it was enough to rise unpleasant emotions, and priest’s attempt to comfort her was greatly appreciated.

     RAMBUNCTIOUS, WASN’T HE ?  it was something she noted a long while ago when johnny initially got freed from his three-thousand year detention. a lot of students feared him, her . . . not as much. well accustomed to the makings of fear, twyla felt more intimidated than threatened. she steered clear of most students she was unfamiliar with, and johnny was seldom an exception to that. he was just another stranger, just with a bad reputation on his tail.

     there’s a barely noticeable amused smile tugging at the corners of her mouth when the greaser hops off the stage, excitement & pride in his stride. she pondered what it might be like to parade around so boastfully, the spotlight unshakably focused on you whenever you pull a new stunt. a quick shiver crept up her spine. now that was scary.

      he was floating through the first row of the crowd and high-fiving each and every one of them (  as if he was at a concert, and not a talent show  ) and she hesitates slightly when he reaches her. hand raises instinctively and is hit with a gusting force, a nervous laugh escapes. “  you did a pretty good job up there, johnny.  “
