not too often does he feel guilty for leaving without saying goodbye. life was a lot easier when he didn't care. or when he could pretend he didn't. he's not so good at pretending anymore. "i'm sorry, elizabeth. if you want me to go, i'll go."

a heavy sigh pushes from his chest, a wince mars his face when he covers the wound with his hand, trying not to bleed on heugh's shit anymore than he already has. logan takes the towel with a grumbled "thanks" while pressing it where his hand was.
weary, only his eyes move to give jacob a look while he stifles down every sarcastic word in favor of telling the truth.
"no. just needed somewhere to be for a while. not long. when the sun goes down i'll go with it."
“what? no i’m not.” he is adamant about that, until he looks down. a deep gash on his thigh is dripping onto the floor. he should’ve smelled the blood. dammit. “well quit standin’ around and get me a towel.”
𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝'𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 . he’ll get one but not without the brief , disapproving cut of his eyes getting slung just once more logan’s way as he passes , disappears , and all within the same beat comes back from the slight he’d taken to dig through his linen closet for a towel he less than cares about .          that bedside manner is to die for . heugh needs more towels .     “    this a social visit ?     “

I was here, when it happened. It’s how I met your grandfather. We hid in there. I heard the stories. My grandfather would say, what happened here was proof that everything in the world finds peace…eventually.

what-the-stark:
Following closely behind as Bruce darted for the medical wing, Tony listened as Jarvis called Pepper, the tinny overlay of shock pushing the voices away until everything was absorbed into the background but the frantic pounding of his own heart. Logan didn’t react as he was placed on the gurney, or even when he was scanned and Tony stepped out of the suit, his expression grim.
“Not recently, but yeah. It’s the adamantium, it’s been poisoning him. All this time.”
Realizing belatedly that the girls were right there as they discussed this, guilt flared and Tony spun around, fighting to school his expression into some approximation of calm. He was terrified, but Laura had to be even more frightened and he didn’t want to start a chain reaction of nope that ended up with multiple crying children and the cheery possibility of still getting stabbed by his ex’s kid.
“Come on kiddos, let’s go set you guys up with a movie — oh, thank god.” She must have already been close. Pepper chose that moment to arrive, almost skidding into the room, teetering briefly on her heels, at least a moderate level of well-controlled panic on her face. She visibly de-escalated as she saw him, only to come to a halt near the girls as she approached, her wide eyes fixed on Logan’s still form.
She swallowed as she recognized him, her brow furrowing, and when she met Tony’s eyes again a long moment later they were already suspiciously shiny. They didn’t even need words, not right now. She knew him so well.
“Hello there, I’m Morgan’s mom.” Blinking rapidly, she summoned a smile as she stopped a few feet from Laura and took her silent daughter’s hand as she tugged at Pepper’s sleeve. “Would you two like a snack? We have cupcakes in the kitchen.” Offering her free hand, she waited patiently for the other child to take it before leading them out of the room.
The look she cast back at Tony as they went out of sight hit him with an almost physical impact, grief and loss and confusion swelling within him and he closed his eyes against it for one long breath, then another. Clearing his throat as he tried again to gather his composure, Tony stepped up to the gurney, his hands gripping the edge until his knuckles bled white.
“He said…it had started years ago. Back before he left.”
bruce is already working, glancing up between the readings on the monitors and down to where he’s got an IV catheter inserted into logan’s left arm. it bothers him that it was so easy to insert. bothers him more that the mutant on the table didn’t react at all to him putting it in. although it was probably a small blessing as well, given how the mutant tended to react to certain things. and with his history of medical experimentation...
“back before he left,” bruce replies grimly, straightining as he sets aside the vials of logan’s blood to take over to the lab. he pushes his glasses up his nose with the back of his wrist and gives tony a long look. “is that why he left?”
it would make sense. bruce was never close to logan, even when they were both hanging around the same spaces in the tower. logan was only ever interested in tony and bruce was just a guy who he occasionally called a nerd and shared a few meals with. what he does remember is how devastated tony was when the man left and how angry it made both him and the hulk to see it.
huffing an irritated breath, bruce shook his head and picked up the tray of samples. “he had two of the biggest brains in the world right here and instead of asking for help he took off. i’m sorry but... he’s an idiot.”
it’s not really his place to say anything, but he’s said it, and he doesn’t regret it. he’s been thrown in the deep end very suddenly, and there is scarily little he knows about logan’s genetic makeup or homosuperior genes in general. and there were other factors here that had nothing to do with genetics and everything to do with horrible things done to logan that he doesn’t even remember.
which brings him to another thought. “who was that girl, by the way? is she with him?”

what-the-stark:
Rushing over to the other side of the car before the situation escalated, Tony reached to touch Laura’s shoulder to calm her and divert her attention before thinking better of it. She was on edge and he really didn’t need her going like an MMA fighter at Bruce, or changing her mind about shanking him, either. And they definitely didn’t need both of them laid up. The poor kid was obviously terrified, and rightly so. He tried to comfort her a little, as best he could, though he knew the words of a stranger were a shockingly poor substitute for anything she should have right now.
“Ningún hospital, lo prometo. Vivimos aquí, y mi amigo es médico.”
A few steps put him in between the little girl and Bruce, and Tony didn’t bother schooling his expression. Waste of energy. Bruce would see right through any attempt at dissembling immediately anyway.
“It’s Logan.” Throat tightening until he couldn’t speak for a moment, Tony swallowed, the fear that had ridden him since he’d first seen the man flaring until it eclipsed the bitter anger, the grief, both old and new, that had dominated his mind in the park. His thoughts raced recklessly, and he could barely gather his words enough to speak, probabilities and possible solutions racing in his mind, crashing upon his knowledge of Logan’s personal physiology only to be rejected again a moment later. He needed more than theory for this, and he wasn’t sure that even existed anymore.
“He’s…God. It’s bad, Bruce. Please, I’ll get him inside if you can set things up?”
Not waiting for him to reply, Tony called the suit again, waiting a few moments for it to enclose him before he moved to lift Logan’s still form from the back seat. “J? Call Pepper, please. On the priority line.”
Logan was completely limp in his arms, and he couldn’t help himself from taking a moment to scan him, to check the limping, hesitant beat of his heart that made Tony aware of his own aching in return.
“Girls, follow us inside now, okay? Everything’s gonna be alright.”
He’d always said he would never lie to his child, but he was already lying to himself.
“logan?”
everything was so chaotic, it took a moment for bruce’s brain to catch up. but when it did, his eyes went wide while he looked between tony and the unconscious man in the car.
“wait, logan? your logan?”
it only dawned on him after he said it that he shouldn’t have, but it was too late now. he could apologize later since, clearly, there were more pressing matters to attend to. it was hard to imagine what could be wrong with a nearly indestructible mutant, but bruce knew he would soon find out.
nodding, he watched tony get the man out of the car. in the light of day it was clear just how bad he was. the sound of logan’s breathing alone told him plenty. they were running out of time.
“got it, got it!”
without looking back to make sure morgan and the other girl were following (since he assumed pepper was on her way to look after them), bruce took off running toward the compound. every door he approached until the medical labs opened for him thanks to JARVIS and the security protocols put in place to recognize him, so he was there in no time, prepping a gurney and bringing up the holograms that would monitor logan’s vitals. there were some things he did like to do the old fashioned way, and so he grabbed his stethoscope where it hung on the wall with his lab coat.
bruce had a lot of questions, some of which would have to wait. but he’d been there when logan had disappeared. he’d seen first hand what it had done to tony and how long it took for his friend to get over it. although given how wrecked tony currently seemed, maybe ‘over it’ wasn’t the right phrase.
once logan is laid in place and JARVIS began to get readings, bruce finds himself staring at the various monitors looking horrified. nearly every part of the mutant is lit up red. as if his whole body is shutting down.
actually, it is.
“jesus,” bruce mutters, flipping quickly through screens and taking in vitals. “last i knew we couldn’t draw his blood but something tells me that won’t be a problem now.” he’s already grabbing syringes and needles, ripping open sterile packages. “i’ll hook up an IV, get some fluids in him and take samples. did he say anything to you before he wound up like this? did someone do something to him?”

what-the-stark:
Emotion was running high, to say the least, yet despite the conflicted relief that coursed through him, Tony hadn’t even tried to blunt the edge of his anger. Striking out like this was pointless, and even as he let Logan have it, that keen edge bit back, flashes of acute empathy striking with each flinch, with each pained reaction to his words. He hadn’t had a chance to brace himself, it was just so immediate, all of this, memories rushing back, everything that had been muted by time and acceptance of the truth suddenly turned on its head by the fact that Logan was alive, alive and here, but not for long.
Not for long at all.
Tumblr media
Tony had closed his eyes for only a moment, and Logan took the opportunity to escape. Or to try for it…. he only made it a few steps, bumping against him, wavering visibly before he crumpled, legs folding beneath him. Instinctively, Tony caught him and cursed, staggering, immediately compensating with his prosthetic arm when the weight that he’d forgotten, the weight of the metal that was killing the other man, pulled him back down towards the earth.
If it hadn’t been for the arm, he would have dropped him or fallen as well– the irony had not escaped him– but with it he managed to lower Logan to the ground before summoning his suit. The panels assembled around him as he straightened, and his furrowed brow smoothed with some effort as Morgan reached for one armored hand, her little face visibly concerned.
“Daddy? What’s wrong with him?” Laura had abandoned her post in the truck when she’d seen Logan go down, and Tony lightly squeezed his daughter’s fingers as the other little girl approached, the look on her delicate features fierce enough to raise the fine hairs on the back of his neck.
“He’s sick, sweetheart. We’re gonna take him and get some help, okay? You girls go ahead and climb in, I’ve got him.” Glancing at Laura, he knelt beside Logan on the pavement, his expression openly entreating.
Please, kid. Make this easy on all of us.
Surprisingly enough, she did. He couldn’t have wagered why, maybe it was the first aid, maybe Logan had told her something about them, but either way. She got in the car with Morgan without protest and Tony released the breath he’d been holding as he bent to gather Logan into his arms. Thank god. He was grateful not to have to try and fight a small angry version of his ex in front of his own daughter while lifting a man that weighed as much as a small horse into the backseat of his car. Even in the suit.
What could he even do? This entire situation seemed hopeless, but Tony had sworn he’d never give up on Logan, and he damn well wasn’t going to start now. He needed help, but he wasn’t without resources, obviously.
Pulling out of the park and onto the highway, first he went ahead and called the guy that always ended up sciencing with him at some point during every misadventure anyway. As much as he knew Bruce appreciated his privacy these days, Tony thought maybe he’d appreciate an opportunity to save Logan’s life even more. He knew this wasn’t a two person job, they needed experts, proper facilities, maybe a fucking miracle, but it was a good start. Hard to go wrong with the smartest nuclear physicist in the world as your tag team partner.
He hoped.
“Hey buddy. You free? Could really use your help over at the lab.”
it was a rare occasion that bruce wasn’t free when tony called, just because it was tony. they were like family now, and tony had been better to him than his own, actual family had ever been. so when the man reached out, bruce was there without asking what or why.
when tony pulled up, he was there, sitting on a bench waiting. on his feet before the car stopped, he moved closer but lingered back a bit, brow furrowed with curiosity as to what it was he was there for.
the front, passenger door opened and morgan got out, and while she smiled at him, he noted the serious expression on the rest of her face. “hey, morgan, how’s it going?” she only shrugged and turned to look back into the car expectantly. bruce leaned just a bit, and leaned right back when another girl got out. a little taller and a little older than morgan. he had no idea who she was, but there was blood on her shirt, and he was immediately alarmed? “uh, hi? are you okay?”
the girl said nothing, only pushed her pink sunglasses up her nose before slamming the door shut. then she moved to the back, passenger door and pulled it open. tony was out of the car now and bruce, bewildered, shook his head and peered into the back, eyes going wide with what he saw.
Tumblr media
“holy shit,” he said, voice hushed as he moved closer. whoever it was, he wasn’t moving. the guy looked dead and for a moment, bruce thought he was, but then his chest lifted with a breath that sounded strangled.
“jesus, tony, why the hell did you call me? this guy needs a hospital!”
“no!”
the girl, the one bruce didn’t know, spoke up, putting herself bodily between him and the man in the car. she pushed her sunglasses up to the top of her head so she could glare at him. “no. no hay hospitales. no le gustan los hospitales.”
again he’s baffled and looks to tony for help, for a clue, an explaination. something.
“seriously, who is this?”

it’s a good thing he is who he is, with all the abilities that come with it. otherwise he would’ve been pissed to be bothered and left wondering who knew he was there. but since he is who he is — a mutant with hightened senses, among other things — logan knows who is at his door and that she’s bleeding before she even knocks. “jesus christ, kid.”
he shouldn’t call her kid. she’s very much not. but he’s thrown to see her in such a state and even more so when he has to catch her so she doesn’t land face first on the floor of his motel room.
without thinking logan scoops lilly up into his arms as if she weighed nothing (practically true for him) and carried her to the bed. if she bled on the sheets, well. he didn’t give a fuck. wouldn’t be the first time he’s wrecked a motel room and probably won’t be the last. he only leaves her side for the few seconds it takes to fill the ice bucket with water and grab a couple towels and washcloths and then he’s back, setting the bucket on the nightstand and the towels beside her before he sits. he’s got a laundry list of questions running through his head, but some would have to wait because he’s afraid she’ll pass out. our worse. so he begins checking her over with his eyes first, then carefully, starts looking for the source of the bleeding.
“give me one good reason not to call an ambulance.”
it has long since been acknowledged between the two of them, that whatever they had was — flexible, fluid even, something comfortable that fit snugly into the unknown of their lives without having to talk or worry about it. she was there if he needed ( or wanted ) her and vice versa, no matter how long it had been, or how long either one of them stayed.
but tonight she doesn’t have her phone to call him, she’s soaking wet from head to foot, and the drops of water falling off her are colored a concerning shade of red. knocking lightly on the door, lilly waits a moment before speaking.     ❛ logan? ❜     her voice is strained, hoarse, as if from screaming.     ❛ i’m sorry, i couldn’t call i — ❜     leaning against the doorframe for support she’d laugh incredulously if her ribs could take it,     ❛ my phone got smashed, so i sorta just. made an educated guess of where you might be. ❜     when he opens the door logan will find one very wet and pale looking lilly, who is currently trying not to look like she’s in pain. or that she’s afraid ( she is. deathly. ).
it’s been a while since she’s been scared.     ❛ i would’ve brought snacks, but wouldn’t you know i got mugged? terrible business. ❜     the mugged part is a lie, what happened is much worse, but as she half-stumbles forward into him all she can think is: at least the part where all my money is gone is true.

"yeah, that's the point," logan replies, as if it should be obvious. was certainly clear to him. "if it tastes terrible then i don't have to share." without asking, he snatches the bottle back from spock and takes a swig. "doesn't effect me either, unless i drink a few gallons."
Tumblr media
Spock looks at the bottle in his hands, the liquid like amber, gold flecks against his skin, “ ⸻this has no effect, ” which was not precisely his goal in this moment. Curiosity: was largely its only compelling factor. “ And the taste is utterly detestable. ”
