The night Eddie goes on his first date with a man, Buck goes out to a dive bar.
He hadn’t planned on it. He’d been home when Eddie left, reassuring him he looked okay and double-checking that Eddie knew he didn’t have to do anything he didn’t want to do.
(“I’m an adult, Buck, I can look out for myself,” Eddie had protested.
“Yeah, but it’s a new situation,” Buck had said. “I just mean—don’t pressure yourself, you know? You don’t have to—check any boxes or anything.”)
And he’d intended to be home when Eddie gets home, too. To hear all about it. To debrief, if Eddie wanted to talk it through. If Eddie needed someone to talk to about his first queer experience. Like the good friend and fraudulent husband he is.
But then he’d imagined the moment Eddie walks through the door. The joy on his face when the date goes well, that dopey kind of happy look he gets sometimes, and the queer euphoria Eddie would feel at finally getting to know this part of himself.
Buck wants that for Eddie. He wants everything for Eddie. He just doesn’t think he can see it happen firsthand, not when it’s so fresh.
And if the date went really well—
Buck doesn’t want to feel Eddie slip into bed beside him with the scent of some other man still clinging to him.
And he definitely doesn’t want to sit at home waiting only to realise Eddie isn’t coming home tonight.

no but like the way he says it…it means that he doesn’t remember and wasn’t conscious when he asked if buck was hurt….like that was such a need, a desperate need for him to know in death that buck was safe. that chris was safe. …what in the fanfiction.
