finished the first case of AA5 which is... turnabout countdown... i think... the case names are forgettable to me lol. anyway, as tutorial cases go, probably the worst since 2-1. I loved and missed Phoenix so it was nice to play him, but as tutorial cases go it probably would've made more sense to just have me keep playing Athena, with Phoenix showing up to pitch in and help her out.

the puzzles were ok i guess, mostly i was a step ahead of the game, which is fine. I didn't think the story was particularly compelling even with Apollo getting clobbered and an explosion happening. possibly the biggest plot twist in ace attorney history is that someone actually wrote their killer's name in their own blood while dying. unprecendented!

Athena is fine, she's feisty and likable enough, but this case wasn't exactly designed to let her shine. (And if criticism is to be believed, neither is the rest of the game...) I think her "superpower" is ambiguous and nonsensical but I guess so is perceive lol... I think there's a few things AA as a franchise decided needed to be "its thing" that it could've retired, and on the list is the gimmicky superpower stuff. Spirit channelling felt interesting and unique in a way that perceive and ???? hearing .... tones of voice .......???????.... doesn't, and it wasn't even Phoenix doing it. I thought we'd get to use mood matrix more in this case to test it out, but nope.

other than that I don't think there's much to say about this case. AA3 and AA4 have such good strong opening cases this felt pretty forgettable in comparison... which, if the internet is to be believed, sets the tone for the game.

Obsessed with the vibe that both Ryunosuke and Phoenix were built to be the most easily underestimated guys ever and they’re always set up against people who would eat them alive if given the opportunity. They’re also distinctly different flavors of visibly pathetic, Phoenix has more of the ‘ridiculous stupid reckless crybaby’ thing going on while Ryunosuke is a ‘tiny nervous woodland creature begging to be hunted for sport’ kinda vibe.

While there’s no way that it’s all a facade, it would be interesting if they were at least self aware. Phoenix does his puppy eyes in court at the judge and at Gumshoe to get into the crime scene and Ryunosuke just forgets to draw attention to the fact that he constantly has a sword on his person, while Kazuma uses it for intimidation Ryunosuke rests his hand on it for support and that’s it.

During the 7yg Phoenix tailors his persona specifically to double down on the idea that he’s shady and down on his luck and this feels like a choice that he’s made rather than him actually giving up and we know that he never gave up. That’s like… his whole deal.

Stronghart takes one look at Ryunosuke and immediately dismisses him, no one can turn this little runt into an assassin. He’s not a threat if he mutters all his thoughts to himself and is visibly anxious all the time.

I just think it would be funny if they weaponized it and are constantly pulling the ‘im a little birthday boy’ move.
