Tòn is the youngest twin of the babies of the Kingscholar family. Sly and calculating, Tòn decided at age 4 that he was destined for greatness and every aspect of his life since then has been dedicated to that end. Happy to let Kana take the spotlight, Tòn takes his work behind the scenes (and into dark alleys, under desks, rifling through cupboards…)

Originally intending on going to Royal Sword Academy, the twins made a last minute decision to attend NRC. Upon Kana’s titling as Housewarden he became her Vice Housewarden. Much of his tasks involve gathering information, styling and promotion. Tòn keeps his actual hopes and desires close to his chest, but he does want to one day be his monarch’s advisor. Quiet and thoughtful, a close friend of the twins maintains he is the scarier of the two.

Sorted into Octavinelle (Leona was beside himself), Kana challenged and usurped the prior housewarden on day 6 and set about turning the Mostro Lounge into a host club. She’s been known to refer to the dorm as “her little kingdom”. Charming and friendly at one moment, Kana can turn cold and domineering at the flip of a coin. She runs a tight ship.

Gigi is the second daughter of the Kingscholar family. She was a shock of energy right out of the gate, running almost before she started walking. A bit of a thrill seeker, Gigi loves speed, sports and beautiful women. In that order.

Where Falla is more disengaged, Gigi tries to take on a more ‘big sibling’ care taker roll with the twins. She’s not sure if they listen to her though… Currently vice-captain of the NRC Spelldrive team, she hopes to go pro one day (following in her father Ruggie’s footsteps). But she needs to get her grades up…

First born daughter to Leona, Ara and Ruggie Kingscholar. A quiet and serious young woman who prefers the company of plants to her peers. Currently a senior at NRC interning with a tropical botsny research lab. She has a special interest in resurrecting extinct species.

In general, she lets her more rambunctious younger siblings do what they want. However, her wrath is well feared and often a glare is all it takes to put them in line. She doesn’t favor any of her parents, though Ruggie sometimes worries she’s not getting out and making trouble as much as a young person should.

Ara and Sebek:

Well. Funnily enough. :T Sebek is the one member of the cast Ara has real beef with.

It all began when Ara tried to join the Equestrian Club. She was like "Mounted combat would be a useful skill to know..." Rat of course tagged along as well. The thing is...horses do NOT like Hivechildren. They're somewhere alien between a beastman and a human and it weirds horses out. So after an afternoon of getting bucked onto her ass, Riddle finally talked her into giving up ("investing her skills elsewhere" as he put it). Sebek was PRETTY UNHELPFUL through that process and FAIRLY SMUG that she was sent packing. Rat meanwhile found the horses didn't mind him so much, so he started helping out quietly when he could. Mucking the stalls, helping feed the horses or brushing them down after practice. He was pretty enamored with watching the three club members practice, especially Riddle. It blew his mind seeing someone as small as he was be able to command such a large powerful beast so effortlessly. After many weeks of working up his courage he finally asked if he could properly join the club. It turns out that he had a bit of a talent for it, but he also REALLY irked Sebek, who started to ride his ass pretty hard. Something about his timidness and lack of self confidence just bothers Sebek, so he goes after him often. Things like "WHY WON'T YOU SPEAK UP!" or "STAND UP STRAIGHTER WHEN YOU SPEAK, CREATURE!" and "HOW DARE A HUMAN AS LOWLY AS YOU BUMP INTO MY LORD MALLEUS". Rat already rides a fine line between 'functional' and 'terrified' on a good day, so he was ready to quit when he finally told Ara what was going on. Guard Dog Ara immediately went to have a candid conversation with Sebek, thinking they could sort it all out no problem but well...he's Sebek...so things did NOT in fact de-escalate and it ended with Ara popping him in the jaw. Of course Sebek was HIGHLY AFFRONTED AT THAT and they got into a little bit of a brawl... A couple bloody noses and a few 'Off WIth Your Head's later and things were settled, though Sebek still gives Ara a wide berth and she still scowls when he passes by. For the record, Yuuri thinks this was very good for Ara! uvu Look at her, forming her own opinions and letting herself dislike someone for the first time! Malleus and Lilia also find it terribly amusing (Silver not so much).

Ara and Vil:

Ara did not have much interaction with Vil until after book 6, when they ended up at STYX at the same time. She mainly knew Vil as Leona's ex and sort of friend, and because of Rook who had taken to chasing Rat around campus in his free time (a guy has to have hobbies). Through the events at STYX Ara became a little enamored with Vil. He's always so cool and confident and put together u_u. And beautiful of course. Ara grew up in a literal cave and feels VERY SHY and unconfident when it comes to testing out how she wants to express her femininity. After she worked up the courage she asked Vil if he might consider teaching her a bit about make up and Vil was like A NEW PROJECT YOU SAY? Vil discovers Ara occasionally sings at the Mostro Longue and starts hounding her to put on a bit more of a show, which Ara finds she really enjoys. In the end, Ara ends up looking up to him as an older sister figure. Leona wishes he'd stop trying to convince Ara to dump him though B(

but the devotee just doesn’t get it. they don’t understand what they’ve done to receive this treatment or why the other character looks at them like they’ve just seen salvation. they fear they will never live up to the devoted one’s expectations and sometimes they wonder if their s/o is even in love with them, or if they’re really in love with the perfect version of them that they’ve created in their mind.

Act I Scene XI

On Kisses

Ara has never really given much thought about kissing, but lately, it’s been on her mind.

It’s terribly annoying to be honest. The thoughts plague her when she’d much rather be focusing on lecture or listening to her friends or working to keep her body in shape for the STYX evaluations. Instead, she finds her thoughts drifting, gone before she even realizes she’s strayed.

She doesn’t even think about kissing on the lips all that often. That still seems too much, somehow. It makes her chest feel tight and her face hot and it becomes obvious to observers far too quickly where her mind has gone. Instead, she finds herself thinking of trailing her lips over soft freckles in tender places: the inside of his wrist, the nape of his neck, the dip in his hip that reveals itself when he stretches and his shirt rides up just a tad.

And as if that were not infuriating enough, lately she’s been thinking about kissing another as well. It hasn’t stemmed the passion for her first crush. If anything, it’s seemed to add to it. When she sees them together, arm draped with lazy affection over a shoulder, or heads bowed together snickering at some unfortunate party, it makes Ara’s heart choke and her head lighten. She begins to think of him kissing her too: in the valley behind her ear, down the line of her spine, over the inner softness of her knee.

Yuuri has shown her the movies. Sweeping romances, with swirling scenes and lifting music and dramatic arguments that end in desperate confessions. In these movies, the feelings seem fun, desired, even needed. Ara isn’t quite sure what she’s doing wrong, but her madness certainly isn’t fun.

These movies never end in the way she wants either. When there are two loves vying for a maiden’s heart, she always picks one over the other. Never does she take both hands and draw them together, or fall into the safe embrace of two sets of arms. It seems a waste, Ara thinks, but perhaps that is just her desperation for hope speaking.

“You should make a move,” Yuuri tells her after the movies end. Ara never answers but she knows Yuuri sees the fear in her eyes because the girl always sighs and gives her a hug before leaving her to her thoughts.

Then one day, she doesn’t. She just narrows her eyes and leans in to scrutinize Ara in a way that makes the lethal young woman feel decidedly small.

“They love you too, you know,” Yuuri finally tells her, and Ara frowns. Of course they do. They’re some of her dearest friends. It’s clear Ara is not understanding her and Yuuri gives a dramatic sigh.

“At some point one of you is going to have to get brave,” she tells the girl, “And you better hope it’s not Leona because he’s not going to be sweet about it!” Ara tries to hide a smile and Yuuri grins as well, before shaking her head and putting on a stern look again. She stands and comes to glare down on Ara with her hands on her hips.

“I thought,” she challenged, “That Hivechildren weren’t afraid of anything.”

Except Rat, Yuuri thinks.

Except Rat, Ara agrees.

“You can take a hit from a blade without flinching but you’re scared of a boy?” Yuuri went on, “You’re giving them much too much credit.”

With that she pressed a kiss to Ara’s head, and left the girl to herself.

Ara sat there alone for a long time, but by the time she finally lifted herself to walk to bed, she had made a decision. It was true.

Hivechildren weren’t afraid of anything.
