Topic of dress codes
dress codes aren’t good because it stops students from expressing themselves through their clothing choices.

Lesson 15, Task 4: What do I Believe in?
The topic of dress codes is something that has been discussed in schools for years. It has been a debated topic between students and teachers for a long time for various reasons.
In this post, I will be talking about the positives and negatives that come from dress codes, and I will be explaining my personal opinion on the matter.
Many schools have issues with students wearing clothing labelled as “inappropriate”. Whether a student is wearing unbelievably short shorts, or is wearing a shirt that shows a bit too much of their breasts, it is a topic that is bound to come up in every school every once in a while.
Many schools have a dress code in place, but, with the majority of these dress codes, they are very unfairly pointed in the direction of the girls. I have witnessed in my old high school, boys walking around with their shirts off, and not getting dress-coded. Meanwhile, a girl could be wearing a tank top that shows her shoulders and she’ll be sent to the principal’s office like some sort of criminal.
In my opinion, the dress codes should just specify that your pants/skirts/shorts must reach at least half-way down your thigh, and that you can wear whatever shirt you want, as long as you’re not exposing too much skin- This would go for girls and boys.
Many schools also try to enforce ridiculous dress code rules about how students can wear their hair, piercings, and hiding their tattoos. Whenever I hear about things like this, it makes me so infuriated. I am someone who has lots of piercings and tattoos, and I even used to colour my hair funky colours years ago. If a teacher had sent me to the office because they didn’t approve of my piercings or tattoos, I would have just left the school;. Thankfully though, my school wan’t like that, but so many schools nowadays are, and its awful.
On a similar topic, many schools also try to control how their students dress by enforcing that all students must wear a school uniform instead of their everyday clothes. To me, these two issues are very similar.
Schools are always encouraging their students to “be yourself” and “show off your individuality”, but if you’re taking away what makes the students feel comfortable in their own skin, and making them dress the exact same as everyone else, you’re really going completely against your initial point.
I think that as long as students are covering up the intimate parts of their bodies, and are’nt wearing anything that promotes hateful behaviors (ie. shirts with racial slurs etc.) and they aren’t hurting anybody with their appearance, then they should be able to wear whatever they want, without fear of being sent home because their tank top straps were a centimeter too thin.

Lesson 15, Task 2: What has Influenced Me?
[Food, fashion, architecture, leisure activities, entertainment]
Food: We are non-religious so we have never been not able to eat certain foods due to beliefs. I also am a huge animal lover, so I don’t like to eat meat very much.
Fashion: The music I listen to, and TV shows i watch have definitely influenced the things I wear on a daily basis.
Architecture: I live in a small town with lots of small, quaint buildings, which I suppose has made me appreciate giant skyscrapers and tall buildings even more when I go to big cities like Toronto because I don’t see stuff like that every day.
Leisure Activities: My family has always been very active, so watching them doing workouts on a regular basis and going for bicycle rides and runs has definitely influenced me to be more active in my own life, and I started working out on a regular basis about a year ago.
Entertainment: The TV shows and movies I enjoy play a very big factor in influencing me to do more art. I draw, paint, sculpt, and more, and I love creating art based on my favorite TV shows, movies, and actors.

Lesson 15, Task 2: What has Influenced Me?
There are many factors that have come into play over the course of my life that have influenced the way I am today. In this post, I will be focusing on these five main cultural influences: Food, fashion, architecture, leisure activities, and entertainment.
To start off, I will focus on the topic of food. My family is non-religious, so we have never really avoided any specific foods due to religious beliefs. However, I have always been a huge animal lover, so eating most meats makes me kid of uncomfortable, and I prefer not to eat it whenever I can avoid it.
I have seen so many horrible videos of animal being abused and neglected in farms before they are killed for their meat, and they have definitely influenced my decision to stay away from meat.
Tumblr media
Next on the list is fashion. I think that the music I listen to, and the TV shows and movies I watch have definitely influenced the things I wear on a daily basis. For example, I listen toa  lot of bands in the “emo” or “punk” genre, and oftentimes, what the members of the bands are wearing really speaks to me, and I am influenced to buy similar things.
I also love to collect merchandise from my favorite TV series ‘Supernatural’. My collection includes collectible figures and models, posters, DVDs, photo ops at conventions, and of course, clothes... lots and lots of clothes.
I have so many shirt, sweaters, pants, gloves, hats, scarves and other various clothing items that I wear a lot of the time. Whenever I wear these things, you could say I’m influence by the show because I have the show’s designs, characters and logos all over me.
I have even been influence in my fashion choices based on what certain characters wear on the show. For example, my favorite character is named Castiel, and he wears a trench coat. Since I have started watching the show, I now own three trench coats at the moment.
Tumblr media
Next up for cultural influences is architecture. Since I have lived in a small town my whole life, you probably could’ve guessed that I have mostly been surrounded by small, quaint buildings and houses whenever I go outside or look through my window.
I think that this has made me appreciate more complex structures even more. When I go to places like Toronto, I am always so intrigued by the fancy buildings and giant skyscrapers all around on every corner. I don’t see stuff like that everyday, so when I do, its very impressive and interesting.
Tumblr media
When it comes to how activities have influenced me in my day-to-day life, my parents have always been very active. From taking me on hiking trail trips around town, bicycling all over, and seeing them exercise on a regular basis, it really influenced me to better myself as well.
I started working out consistently over a year ago, and it has definitely helped me out, not only with my physical health, but with my mental health as well.
Tumblr media
Lastly, in the entertainment category, the TV shows and movies I enjoy play such a huge factor in influencing me to do more art. I love creating art based on concepts from my favorite shows and movies. Countless times, I’ve been watching Supernatural, or seen a photo shoot with the actors, or a screen cap someone took during the episode, and immediately said to myself “I need to draw that!”
The things I watch have given me the extra push I need to draw more often and, as a result of that, have helped me progress my art skills over time.(My drawings are below)

Lesson 15, Task 1: Where do I live?
2016 Population:
93,830
Sex Distribution:
50.7% Female, 49.3% Male
Since there are around 68 150 people in Grey county, it can be difficult to find jobs since a lot of the jobs around here are family-owned and operated.
In our community, we have a local YMCA, and other establishments that are here to help citizens find occupations that will fit their needs, such as transportation and accommodations for disabilities.

Lesson 15, Task 1: Where do I Live?
I live in the town of Hanover in Ontario, Canada. Hanover is located in Grey county, which is what I’ll be focusing on in this blog post.
Tumblr media
Grey is a county, mainly compiled of small, close-knit towns. According to the census done in 2016, there are approximately 93,830 people living in Grey county. I was honestly surprised to find out that the county I’m in has so many people. The town of Hanover alone only has about 7 000 people in it, and Grey county just doesn’t seem very big to me, so 93 830 seems like a very big number for the amount of people here.
When the 2011 census was done, there were approximately 92,568 in Grey county. The population in our county has not changed very drastically at all. In fact, the population change in Grey county between 2011 and 2016 is only 1,4%.
I think the reason why the population of Grey county hasn’t changed all that much is because, most of the people who live here have been living here for a while. Not many people who are originally from out of Grey county are moving here because it’s so small and doesn’t have what they would probably find in a city.
Grey county is a nice, small county, which is great for families. Although, the prices of real estate in Hanover have dramatically risen over the past few years, and I highly doubt many people would pay so much money to live in a house in such a small place.
Tumblr media
Even though Grey county is small, it is a nice, quiet place to live in my opinion. It’s definitely a lot different then the city. We may not have many big malls or fancy stores, but Grey county has a lot to offer in terms of nature and surroundings.
Tumblr media
Just in the few small towns near me, we have at least five gorgeous walking and hiking trails nearby- many of which are filled with beautiful wildlife you can observe from afar. With these trails and conservation areas come so many fun things to do. You can walk around and see all of the different animals you can spot, you can go snowshoeing in the wintertime, ride your bicycles down the trails in the summertime, and you can even go fishing and enjoy the pleasant solitude while looking over the long stretch of rivers and lakes nearby.
Tumblr media
I think that there may be some issue in terms of finding occupations in Grey county. I work in a coffee shop in Hanover, and it took me a while just to find a jobs round here that I would enjoy going to. Not because there were a lack of things that I was interested in, but because so many of the businesses are family-owned and operated, or they already have a lot of staff and aren’t looking for more.
Since Grey county is not a really big place, yet we have almost 93 850 people, some people are bound to have trouble finding good jobs. Even though this may cause some people to have problems when looking for an occupation, there are many places around this county which can help. There are various YMCA locations and more that can help you find a job that best suits your needs and wants, such as distance and accommodations for disabilities. There are even job fairs held in local recreation centers so you can find out more about the jobs from people with first-hand experience.
Tumblr media
Overall, Grey county is a pretty great place to live, with lots of beautiful sites and fun things to do!
