He flicked his tongue over his lip, giving a low chuckle. She was cautious, which would make her more of a challenge. He was beginning to wonder why he’d wanted someone easy. challenges make life spicy, after all.
“Huh. No fuckin way, I’d let all that go t’waste.” He gestured at her, appreciating every last inch of her in her dress. “I got you for two hours and I plan on makin the most of it.”
She slides off her barstool like some old noir movie femme fatale, all confidence and sex appeal. Lead the way she says, like she knows every fucking move he’s going to make and is going to enjoy them. goddamn, she’s good. He doesn’t think this is something they can teach, either, this careless self-assurance. Somewhere under that skin and that dress and the curved red lips, she’s probably scared or bored, but it doesn’t show. She’s a professional, and she radiates confidence.
He grins, writing his room number down for the bartender to charge the drinks. He steps to her, putting a hand to the small of her back, pretending to guide her through the bar. “Right this way,” he purrs close to her ear, lips nearly touching her. He lingers just a beat too long to intend anything but seduction. Then he pulls away easily, casually, like he’s not hoping to make her knees a little weak, like he doesn’t care. But he watches her reaction from the corner of his eye, a half-smile on his lips.
Gooseflesh erupts on her skin and something hot twists her stomach. For all her neuroses, she’s still a hot-blooded woman and there’s a thrill in the way he looks at her, in the way she’s suddenly thinking about how his voice would sound in her ear, throaty and dark, instead of Nicole.
A little frown creases her brow, though, and she studies him. Tries to make heads or tails of this proposition, because what a curious thing it is. Theirs is a transactional arrangement; he’s bought and paid for her, but he’s still asking for her consent. Still defying expectations.
“Assuming you don’t go all Buffalo Bill on me–sure, I’m game.” It’s not just because of that transaction. He’s piqued her interest, because while she doesn’t doubt his first request, she’s starting to think ol’ Ross here is looking for something beyond carnal pleasures. It’s stupid, and she can hear all the warning bells going off, but it’s that thrill–addiction of the worst kind, and she wants to know what game he’s playing, if she can beat him at it. Figures the first john she gets isn’t normal.
Rachel downs half her drink and leaves the rest on the counter, and then slides off the stool, her clutch in her hand and shaking her hair over her shoulders. “Lead the way.”

She’s not some dumb kid, that’s for sure. The look she gives him is sharp as surgical steel, incisive. For a moment he thinks she can see him laid bare, all his sins and all his flaws spilling out so she can catalogue them and file them away. He has to take a breath, tip her a wink, take the upper hand. The corner of his mouth goes up, half in amusement and half in relief.
She’s not seeing him. She’s seeing Ross Battaglia. And that’s just fine, it’s how he wants it. Nicole is probably an alias for her, too. It’s cleaner this way. He orders a whiskey and throws it back, setting the empty shot glass on the bar. He turns to her, grinning. His eyes go over her, slow and hot.
“What I’d like t’do is take you upstairs and fuck you,” he drawls, his voice low so the bartender doesn’t hear. “But first I’d like t’ask you t’do somethin for me. You can say no, don’t feel obligated just ‘cause I’m payin.” He hears the words and wishes he could take them back; sometimes he wishes he had a little more finesse. One shoulder comes up in a careless shrug, though; Ross isn’t bothered. “Th’ only obligation you have is to come up to my room for two hours. That’s what I paid for and that’s what I’ll take.”
She doesn’t look at him, not until he speaks, and then it’s a quick side glance that flickers with something sharp. Incising. It’s an old skill born from an old hurt. There’s no better teacher than experience, they say, and experience has taught her to read people quickly. The madam told her it’d be useful in a trade like this. She hoped it wouldn’t come to that.
“Well, I like to defy expectations,” she says, avoiding his comment about her name. Nicole had sat next to her in population genetics. Nicole was blonde and beautiful and wholesome, and was probably married by now, driving a mini-van full of blonde, beautiful, wholesome kids in some beige suburb. It had been the first name that popped into her head, which was insane because she hadn’t thought about Nicole in years, but tonight she was all Rachel thought about.
Her eyes dart back to him and this time there’s a little bit of mischief there. A dare. He’s not what she expected either–he’s good-looking, self-assured, and so far not putting off the creepy-rapey vibe. What did a man like that need with a call girl? He’s wealthy if he can afford her. Maybe he just doesn’t like complications. That makes two of us, buddy.
“Ross suits you,” she says, pouting out her lower lip just a bit. For once, it’s not a rehearsed look–she’s actually evaluating how the name settles on him. Then she raises a finger and the bartender reaches for her glass. Club soda with lime. She’s been playing it cool, keeping a clear head, but now that he’s here and this is all very real she thinks it’s time for a bit of liquid courage. It’s only sex. It’s only sex. It’s only sex. You have a ten blade in your purse and know where all the arteries are, you’re fine.
“A little bit of gin this time, please,” she says, and finally turns to face her date. “So, Ross–what are our plans for the evening?”

He’s not nervous. Maybe he should be; a decent man probably would be. but then, a decent man wouldn’t hire an escort. A decent man would die of loneliness in a city far away from home, or pick up a decent woman in a hotel bar and make mediocre love to her. He’d let her stay the night and then let her order breakfast and be polite while she leaves.
Matthew’s the kind of man who won’t settle for mediocre, though, and he’s nothing close to decent. Not in business and not in lovemaking. Hell, he treats lovemaking like business; this way, with escorts, it is business. It’s clean and easy and no one gets hurt. But he’s got a proposition for this one that involves a little more than mutual indecency. He figures there’s no harm in asking, and if she says no, he’ll still pay her for he time.
It’s the decent thing to do.
he spots her right away, looking slightly out of place. not touristy, not fish out of water; she’s comfortable enough sitting at the bar, looking bored or a little worried. And the dress she’s wearing- designer, he guesses, it has that look to it- looks like every sin the devil himself ever invented. She draws the eye, is the thing. He’d been thinking that he wanted someone regular looking, normal. Easy. This girl gives off an air of trouble, or maybe danger. She’s an edge over an abyss. A risk.
He grins. He’s never one to back down from a challenge, after all. He slides onto the stool next to her and nods to the bartender. Nonchalant, he doesn’t glance at her. “You ain’t exactly what I was expectin, I’ll tell you that. Y’don’t look like a Nicole.”

Pride is a terrible thing. More kings have been dethroned, saints dirtied, hearts broken by pride than by anything else. There’s a reason it’s the original sin–before the Garden, before Eve, it was Lucifer’s pride that led to the fall.
Shoulda paid attention to that one, Rache.
Pride leaves her here, in an Upper West Side hotel bar, wearing an expensive dress and more make-up that she ever normally bothered with. Pride leaves her stubbornly bludgeoning through on her own instead of asking for help. Pride, and its counterpoint, shame. If she asks for help she’ll have to explain, and explaining means pulling on a thread she’s not ready to unravel. She’s all duct tape and bandaids wrapped up in Versace and pride is the only thing that’s really holding her together.
She tells herself over and over that it’s just sex. She’s used people before, tricked them with a smile and an act. This is no different. Except that it is.
Her heart’s beating too fast and she checks her watch for the third time in five minutes. She’s early, but if he’s late she doesn’t think she can keep herself from bolting. Even pride has its limits.
