Airbrushing, How to Start...

Things I will not be telling you today…

· What’s the best airbrush

· What paint to use

· Air pressure

Assuming you have a canvas that is already with the background color requested by your customer, you ask how do I get the design down and start using my airbrush?

There are so different ways to start.

First off, I do my research and find as many high resolution reference photos as I can even if they are not exactly what I am painting, as long as if the same subject(s). I will usually have these reference photos printed and taped up close to where I am working so I can quickly glance at them while I am painting.

Now here comes the fun part, what technique am I going to use to at this point to ensure that my airbrush work will look like my reference photos and that are many techniques at your disposal.

Am I going to…?

· Freehand the whole design and only rely on the reference pictures?

· Create a stencil by cutting a photo up?

· Transfer the image by using transfer paper and tracing the image onto the surface?

· Use a projector to project the image onto the project?

· Lightly draw it on and use that as a guide?

The options are almost endless when it comes to this part of the whole process. When I decide the technique that I am going to use prior to me picking up the airbrush I consider the surface that I am airbrushing on. Not every surface is going to flat like a canvas and that must be one of the deciding factors in the whole custom paint and airbrush process.

I do a lot of airbrushing where the proportions must be correct or it throughs the whole composition off.
