man pokemon shield/sword just reminded me why i HATE scotland being used in any sort of way in any media
people online just use it as a chance to laugh at how we speak and talk and our own language and culture. scottish people have become a literal joke online and a totally acceptable country to rip on for their language/accents, ykno, historically oppressed languages we had to fight for the right to speak in our own country
its nasty and wreaks of english colonialism.
scotland is home to some of the most famous authors, fairytale writers, novelists, and poets in the world. we arent illiterate just because our language is phonetic and our accents are strong.

I think im lost. Im not really in the pokemanz scene. Whats all this scots drama about the pokemon trainer? Sorry if I sound rude or ignorant or anything! Id just like to know whats going on 😁

Basically like, Scottish people are seen in a pretty bad light because we’ve been in a constant smear campaign from the English government,, this includes being seen as violent or stupid or any number of things for our accent and the Scots language. (yes it is a language)
Since the female trainer is seen as the Scottish trainer people have been quoting famous Scottish Twitter posts with her as the subject, one American (as far as I know) voice acting this character as such in a, pretty bad, Scottish accent.
The problem is that this is just showing how the world sees us again, summarised by these tweets in a native tongue that is seen as gibberish by the major public because they can’t understand the slang in Scots.
Every Scottish person I know is getting,, pretty pissed about this, me included. We just want to have our culture represented fairly and have people not use this as an opportunity to say ‘hurr durr this is what u guys sound like’ while still probably believing in a lot of the stereotypes that have been peddled against us.
I know this is long but, in summary, if your not Scottish- making assumptions about our culture or impressions of us is just fueling the long and painful discrimination we’ve dealt with for centuries and it’s Not Fun. Let’s just play Pokemon.
