I hate that so much discourse into fighting climate change is talking about bioenginerring a special kind of seaweed that removes microplastics or whatever other venture-capital-viable startup idea when we have known for forever about shit like digging crescent shaped holes to catch rainwater and turning barren land hospitable

Idk why I was thinking about this today but in the DS9 episode where they have do so the heist movie to save Vic Fontaine's casino from gangsters, there's a really good bit where Sisko says he doesn't like that holodeck program because it's the kind of place where a black man wouldn't have been welcomed in the real world of 1962 america, and as he has a (possibly hallucinatory) first hand experience with 1950's racism, it makes him uncomfortable.

And Cassidy says oh well Vic isn't like that, it's completely inclusive and yadda yadda whatever, which Sisko says is why he doesn't like it, because it's like, whitewashing history and ignoring the ugly parts. Really thoughtful way to handle that IMO.

ANYWAY, in the episode where Vic Fontaine is trying to play cupid to hook up Kira and Odo, he makes fun of Odo's clothes and refers to him as "Nanook of the North" which is like, a stereotype "eskimo" character from the 20's or something, so Vic is actually completely era-accurately racist after all, and Sisko was right, as usual.

So Paul has that black cloak that he wears for the end of the movie, right? We all know the one.

The first time he has it on is after he wakes up from drinking the Water of Life, in the "we're Harkonnens" conversation with Jessica. He wears it for the rest of the movie.

I never particularly questioned how this cloak showed up on the scene cause like, we get it. It came from the Symbolism Closet. Black is associated with the Harkonnens, sure, but it's also the color of the Atreides formal dress Paul wears in Part One and the color the Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother wears. Black is the color of power.

But then I was looking at this production photo from the Part Two art book:

and now I'm obsessed with the idea of the cloak being one of the layers of Jessica's costume--either the dark layer that we can see under the white/gray and brownish fabric, or the layer under that.

Just imagine her wrapping him up in it at some point, as he's recovering from being mostly dead. It's motherly and intimate and it might seem like comfort. But also she's claiming him, because she won. Giving him one layer of the many many layers of fabric that she's wearing by the end, isolating her from everyone else. Literally putting the mantle of power on his shoulders and making it look like love.

Using the bathroom in general is a human right and should be enshrined as such and I'm not joking. Too many groups of people are denied bathroom breaks or the use of bathrooms entirely--disabled people, blue-collar workers, children, homeless people, prisoners, students, the elderly. I'm surely missing other groups. Not using the bathroom when needed can cause serious, long-term damage, not to mention death. Free, clean, accessible bathrooms should be available everywhere. It's fucking cruel to deny someone the use of the bathroom, regardless of the reasoning. I'd rather every student in the world goof off and every homeless person make a mess and every worker "steal company time" than let one person suffer because they're denied the right to fucking pee in peace.

i dont know who needs to hear this but as a general PSA for those who pay people online for goods and services: KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE BUYING. While it might seem funny to write a clever note along with your transaction, any sort of hint that you're buying something nsfw or even mildly suggestive poses a huge risk that the person you're paying is getting their method of payment shut down permanently. transaction services are stricter than ever. "thanks for the boobs" is a pipe bomb that only needs one pair of eyes to be noticed. loose lips sink ships
