The Controversy of Tattoos on Christians

“Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord.” Leviticus 19:28 (KJV)

The Old Testament Law prohibits tattoos, but these prohibitions were in relation to pagan rituals and worship. If a tattoo is purely for God’s glory, it shouldn’t be a sin.

Me, personally, while I appreciate the art and the talents of tattoo artists, I’ve never had a desire to get one myself. Due to medical conditions, I have an extremely low tolerance to any pain, so even getting a Christian tattoo is out of the question.

The controversy surrounding Christian tattoos is largely centered on the fact that in the Old Testament of the Bible, God forbids Christians from “printing any marks” on their bodies. In fact, tattoos were associated with heathen religion, superstition, and idolatry; a pagan view of salvation that violated ceremonial law.

Those who engaged in these practices would affix a symbol or the name of a false god to their body. However, God demanded that His people behave differently. He reminded His people that He is the LORD, and they were His workmanship. If they were a part of idolatry, they could not have tattoos that glorify God.

Many Christians are skeptical of this argument, but the Christian community itself defends tattoos. Christian tattoos are generally not considered sinful, but they may be inappropriate for some people.

Ideas for Christian Tattoos That Have Meaning

One popular choice for a tattoo is a scripture verse that has a personal meaning to you. While many Christians don’t have Bible verse tattoos, they are a common choice among believers.

Many Christian tattoos are symbols of their faith. Some include pictures of Jesus, renderings of the Last Supper, or the Rock of Ages. The most common outline of a Christian tattoo is the cross.

These designs are a way for Christians to demonstrate their beliefs and bring them closer to God. Although the religious significance of Christian tattoos is often debated, many believe they have spiritual meanings that are relevant to them.

Christian Tattoos Tell a Story and Help Spread the Word of God

Many people get tattoos that tell a story or have some special meaning behind the art. Actually, getting tattoos just for the sake of getting one is rather pointless; a waste of time and money.

Remember, tattoos are permanent. Yes, you can get them covered or removed, by why go through the hassle and expense when you should have given more thought to it before you even got one.

I attended two weddings where the bride had a find a dress that would cover up her tattoos. Now I wondered, if you were so proud of them when you got them, why would you want to cover them up now? I didn’t make any sense to me then or now.

Alternative Ideas for Christian Tattoos

So you have a particularly special Bible verse or image that you love, and you’d get it tattooed if you could. Or you love the saying, verse or image, but don’t like tattoos. You can still wear your favorite artwork… on a t-shirt, hoodie, sweatshirt, or tank top.

Wearing your faith as artwork doesn’t have to be permanent. It’s not something you feel you must cover up for some future event. Simply put it on a piece of clothing! With t-shirts, you can have a different one for each favorite or especially meaningful verse, saying, or image.

Since Christians have access to God’s Word as their source of instruction, astrology and Christianity don’t mix; we are not dependent on astrology or its fruitless predictions.

Is it OK for a Christian to Believe in Astrology?

Should Christians have astrological beliefs and use a horoscope to determine God’s purpose for their lives? It is obvious that people’s infatuation with astrology and horoscopes reflects their need for guidance in the future and knowledge that is greater than their own.

Astrology is the idea that a person’s fate can be determined by the arrangement of the stars and planets at the moment of birth. The Zodiac chart that tries to pin down that fate is known as a “horoscope.”

Astrology in the Christian Bible was Mocked

The Babylonian royal court’s astrologers are mentioned in the Bible, along with their failure to foretell or interpret royal dreams.

10 “The Chaldeans answered the king, and said, “There is not a man on earth who can tell the king’s matter; therefore no king, lord, or ruler has ever asked such things of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean. 11 It is a difficult thing that the king requests, and there is no other who can tell it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.” Daniel 2:10-11

“Then the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in, and I told them the dream; but they did not make known to me its interpretation.” Daniel 4:7

“13You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels; Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and the monthly prognosticators Stand up and save you from what shall come upon you.

Astrology offends God because it gives authority that only God possesses to the planets and stars and because it seeks to determine God’s intent via methods other than those He has designated. God, not astrologers, promises to lead us throughout the Bible:

What Do Christians Need to Know About Astrology?

If we need to know anything to begin with, first, astrology is not astronomy, which is the scientific study of the stars and the universe. Astrology, however, is an attempt by mankind to discover God’s divine will by methods other than those He has designated, and it makes an effort to assign to the stars and planets authority that is only God’s.

Some people accept astrology’s theories with a lot more vigor and enthusiasm. Some people just use it as a toy or fun instrument, similar to a Ouija board. How often have we overheard folks expressing optimism that their horoscopes or Ouija board predictions would come true or not?

According to a Pew Research study:

“One-in-four American adults (25% of the public overall) believe in astrology, including about the same proportion (23%) of Christians. Though the U.S. is an overwhelmingly Christian country, a Pew Forum survey finds that significant minorities profess belief in a variety of Eastern or New Age beliefs. For instance, 24% of the public overall and 22% of Christians say they believe in reincarnation — that people will be reborn in this world again and again.”

Beginning in the 1930s and lasting until, well, even now for newspapers that still appear in print, horoscopes were published daily in printed newspapers. What, though, is astrology? Just the study of celestial bodies like the sun, moon, and stars constitutes it? Or is there more to it?

As many people believe, is astrology scientific? It could appear to be in certain aspects. Astrology makes use of instruments that undoubtedly sound scientific and scientific understanding of the heavenly bodies.

Some individuals make predictions and establish expectations about people’s personality traits and even future events using astrology. They also cite a long list of individuals who feel that astrology has helped them lead better lives as evidence that astrology is supported by facts.

But is astrology genuinely a branch of science? What does the Bible say about “the Zodiac” and astrology, more importantly?

Does the Bible Mention Astrology?

Some have made the attempt to claim that the Bible provides unambiguous support for astrology. In reality, the constellations have been researched and followed for a very long time.

Long before Christ, the Greeks and the Egyptians also used the Zodiac to track the seasons.

But is astrology really a scientific discipline? What does the Bible teach about astrology and “the Zodiac,” more importantly?

A third of Americans say they find astrology to be “extremely” or “kind of” scientific. But does having a Virgo rising and Pisces moon matter in terms of science?

How is the location of the stars at your birth meant to effect your personality and fate? Astrology lacks a mechanism through which it could function. Our astrological signs have moved forward by an entire month due to the motion of the earth. According to studies, astrological predictions are no more accurate than random chance.

Can Christianity and Astrology Be Rather Amusing and Safe?

A lot of individuals say they check their horoscopes for fun. The kindest interpretation is that this type of astrology is only for amusement.

However, more skeptic interpretations, such as that of sociologist Theodor Adorno in the 1950s, contend that faith in astrology facilitates the acceptance of authoritarian norms and a population that is simpler to manage. Why bother making an effort to deal with your mistakes or strive for improvement if your future has already been decided?

To Sum it Up – Christianity and Astrology Do Not and Should Not Mix

Here is the conclusion. What is the exact relationship between whether or not you should make significant decisions in the summer and the stars overhead when you were born? None.

Astrology does not outperform chance in predicting the results of life events. Additionally, it does not offer a method through which it may operate. Only one can predict the future because He already knows the future – The Lord Jesus Christ.

The Whole Armor of God: How to Defend Yourself Against Spiritual Attacks

The Christian life isn’t always easy; we are walking the narrow and righteous road while Satan tries to attack and discourage us at every turn. In fact, he attacks us on all fronts, trying to attack us physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually.

The Whole Armor of God passage in Ephesians 6 tells us exactly how we can defend ourselves against these attacks so that our faith doesn’t fail when the going gets tough.

Stand on His Promises

In the Bible, Ephesians 6 tells us that we are instructed to put on the whole armor of God. The New Living Translation instructs us to “Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11.

It is important for us to remember that when we are saved, our relationship with Jesus Christ absolves us of our past sins and saves us from future sins. He will keep those who have become believers free from stumbling in their faith through temptations.

The Six Pieces of the Whole Armor of God

Let’s take a look at each piece, starting with salvation or what is called The Helmet of Salvation in Ephesians 6. This piece covers our head and protects us from falling into temptation and sin.

The Helmet of Salvation

The Shield of Faith

The Breastplate of Righteousness

The Belt of Truth

The Sword of the Spirit

The Gospel of Peace

The Helmet of Salvation

“…above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” – Ephesians 6:16. In order to put on the helmet of salvation, it is necessary for us first to have faith in Jesus Christ.

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.” Ephesians 1:13

You cannot put on any part of The Whole Armor Of God without first believing in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Therefore, we must first accept His sacrifice for us and rely upon Him for everything in our lives before we can be successful at putting on these pieces.

The Shield of Faith in the Whole Armor of God

A shield can protect you from many things. It can protect you against physical attacks, and it can also protect you against spiritual attacks. In the Bible, we learn that faith is a shield that helps us withstand the fiery darts of the evil one (Ephesians 6:16).

When we put on our whole armor with faith as our shield, we are equipped with everything we need to stand strong against Satan’s temptations.

The Breastplate of Righteousness

The breastplate is a symbol for righteousness and holiness. It is only by being righteous in our lives that we can stand against the forces of evil that are ever-present in this world.

This breastplate provides protection for your heart and is a reminder that you must be pure, even if it means sacrificing something as simple as a favorite food or leisure activity.

The Belt of Truth of the Full Armor of God

Every day, Satan and his demonic forces are attacking the believer’s faith in Christ. They try to convince us that we don’t need Him or want Him.

They try and make us feel worthless, unloved, and unwanted. They want us to turn away from Jesus and give up on our salvation.

That is why it is important for each of us to have the belt of truth around our waist.

The Sword of the Spirit

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12.

The sword is an important part in self-defense because it allows us to fight off spiritual attacks. It protects us against the lies that are being used against us by those who want us in bondage.

To live a life of victory we need to fight back. Scripture tells us that “we are more than conquerors through Christ who loves us” (Romans 8:37). Jesus died for all our sins and rose again so that we could have peace with Him. The devil cannot stop what has already been done.

The Gospel of Peace

We can’t defend ourselves against spiritual attacks without knowing about the gospel. The gospel is the good news that Jesus died for our sins, and whoever believes in Him can have everlasting life.

When we trust in Christ’s work on the cross for us, it frees us from fear because we know that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ.

Understand That We Will Face Attacks

The Bible tells us we will face spiritual attacks in our lives. While it is impossible to always know what will happen or when we will face a spiritual attack, knowing we are covered and protected by the whole armor of God will make all the difference in staying on His path for our lives.
