It is so hard to put into words just how much I fucking adore Dragon's Dogma 2 without just devolving into mad rambling. So I'll try and keep it brief.
My only real genuine points against the game is that the controls for spellcasting can feel unwieldy (not being able to toggle a more precise aiming method like you could in the first really bites,) and that most of the soundtrack is missing that little something something that made the first game's soundtrack so iconic.
And Capcom's insistence on adding useless microtransactions to the storepage purely to prey on people with poor impulse control is a blemish on the game that can't quite be shaken off. On my PS5 there's always the 500 riftcrystals listing for $0.99 is always gonna be staring at me on my home page and it's ugly and I hate looking back at it.
Everything else is fucking immaculate though.
It's not for everyone and I'm glad for it. I'm so fucking relieved that they didn't try to "fix" Dragon's Dogma for a "modern audience." It's everything that made the first game peak fiction with some minor adjustments here and there to really focus in on what the first was going for.
It's hard to recommend it to someone who isn't familiar with DD's funny little tricks, especially at the high price tag, but if you're willing to deal with some wack ass shit and really give it the time it's asking; I can almost guarantee you it's gonna hit just right.
After playing it twice, I can safely say that Dragon's Dogma 2 is barely put together, story doesn't make sense unless you're crazy, enemies love to beat up you for no reason all the time, it takes forever to get anywhere, first half of the game us boring compared to the second, most of the cool and interesting things are so easily missed you'd be forgiven if you thought there were only 5 sidequests, your companions never ever ever shut up, framerate is shaky at best and abhorrent at worst, soundtrack is just passable, the level curve is non-existent past level 40, and worst of all the less than useless microtransactions are a blight on the storefront.
so overall
GOTY 2024 best damn game I've played in years and I'm already planning a 3rd and 4th playthrough holy shit it's badass.
