I love Stefon, but I always feel bad because I’ve never done it without breaking because John would put in different things, or he’ll tell me as I’m walking out, and it’s just like, throwing stuff at me.

Q: “There’s a specific scene, kind of like farther in season one of Barry […] where you punch the glass and you kinda do this with your hands. What is your process for a scene like that?”

Why does no one talk about Barry’s season 2 sound design?
Seriously, there is so much season 2 story conveyed in simply integrating the sound of wind. I mean, check it:
The first time we hear it is when Barry first meets Sam in episode 3 and realizes just who he is (around 3:15 in the video).
youtube
And the first time you hear it, it means nothing. It just goes toward the atmosphere of the scene. The world going quiet as he puts the pieces together.
Then, it happens again.
The sound of wind plays in the opening shots of the very next episode (2x04). Specifically, when Barry is glaring at Sam during the dinner. Now, what’s so clever is it be would be easy to just associate the sound with Barry’s rage. We hear it tied visually to the desert when Barry yells at Mayrbek for goofing off. Then, again, when he tells his actual story to Cousineau at the point he targets the innocent civilian. An event, we later learn Fuches made disappear.

But you know where we don’t hear it? When Barry decides to kill Sam for Sally.
As we learn in Ronny/Lilly the sound of wind is associated with the moment Fuches takes Barry under his wing. His “deal with devil” as it were. It’s a way of letting the audience in on a secret Barry isn’t ready to accept about himself yet (despite both Fuches & Cousineau warning him). His inner darkness has very little to do with his capacity for violence.
Which isn’t to say the traits aren’t mutually linked. Out of habit, violence is the first thing he reaches for. Because of this, Barry mistakenly associates his personal darkness with Fuches, assuming it as something the latter corrupted him with through contract killing. Putting the cart, as it were, before the horse. Hence, why moments of rage early in the season are associated with Fuches or criminal activity when we hear the motif.
However, as we see with Sam, Barry’s rage and propensity for violence can be channeled in a good way. Okay, outright murder isn’t good, but the idea it’s evoked from a desire to protect Sally is a step in the right direction. While his initial, instinctive fight response is tied to the motif (conveying Barry’s mindset that violence is the root of his darkness), the audience is informed this isn’t the case. Because the sound of wind is quite quickly dropped from the Sam situation. The use of of violence, while an inappropriate decision, wasn’t truly born from a place of darkness.
Tumblr media
The real turn, however, is Sally’s play. We hear the wind motif transfer from violence associated with Fuches (again, family friend who got Barry out of trouble) to the selfish killing of Moss. A point later spelled out by Fuches himself. Unlike the previous scenes, however, the sound isn’t associated with anything violent. It’s Barry actually getting in touch with his emotions. More devastatingly, wind plays one last time at the crossroad of the play and saving Cousineau.
Tumblr media
This moment is about as gut wrenching as the wide shot establishing the gun Barry hid in the season one finale. Because it’s Barry finally realizing what five episodes of sound design have been telling us. He isn’t a good person. There is darkness inside him and it’s got nothing to do with Fuches, or Cousineau, or his skills, or any of the excuses he justifies for himself. It’s just this brilliant fusion of great, plot-driven and medium-driven storytelling and the sound editors on the show are fucking amazing. Give them all of the awards!
