CRESSIDA COWELL'S FANS I NEED YOUR HELP!
You guys inspired me to read The Wizards Of Once!
And this is really cool and everything, but the problem is me living in Russia... Here i can't just go to the book store and buy twoo books 'cause in my country it's practically impossible to find books in original, not translated (even Harry Potter, i mean), and only first book is translated into Russian, and there are four of them, so well. Even so i don't want read them in translation because after my experience with httyd books when i don't recognize half of characters and should guess who is Thuggory cause his name as every other name and title was translated and i know them only in Russian, i really don't want it again with twoo. And for obvious reasons i can't order books from Britain or USA or wherever...
You may ask - what's a problem, just buy electronic version. But i can't find it! I searched for it for 2 hours and nothing. Well not nothing, i have found pirate site and now i can download all 4 books, but i don't want to steal them! I really want to give Cressida my money, i want pay her for her work, but i don't know how!
Tumblr media
So guys, if you know some site or something where i can buy electronic versions of twoo, please, give me a link, I'll be very grateful 🙏

The Pirogue
This is the 1 part of my comic, which is based on song written by Anatoly Kireev. And my friend, @regulasregulas, with amazing voice and guitar skills was so kind to sing and record it to me! Here's link on her
I have no idea how to post here songs not from Spotify (if someone do please tell me), so i just made a video with black screen and music, so you can listen to the song.
It's on Russian, so translation is under each page with lyrics. Enjoy, i hope you like it!
Tumblr media
Silent clouds are floating, the way is clear.
On it, transparent and light, the pirogue glides.
Tumblr media
The pirogue glides over the ground in the rays of dawn,
and in that pirogue sleeps a boy
who looks like summer.
Tumblr media
He sleeps without knowing where the current is taking him,
and life is not a joy, not a woe,
but an adventure.
Tumblr media
The hand does not touch the oars,
transparent and clean water is carrying the pirogue,
and thank Heaven.

nobody:
literally no one:
not a single soul:
me: the sheer rawness of hiccup saying “i AM older and i still don’t understand” in how to steal a dragon’s sword in response to stoick’s defense of slavery as a necessary evil blows my mind?? the concept that loss of childhood doesn’t have to mean the same thing as disillusionment or letting go of idealism, that idealism isn’t inherently a “childish” trait to have, that you can become an adult and a leader without compromising the moral values you held as a child despite the world telling you that those moral values were a sign of immaturity and inexperience?? and on the flip side how cynicism isn’t synonymous with wisdom or experience, and in fact cynicism is more of a crutch for characters to excuse their own passivity and justify how they are complicit in an evil social structure simply by upholding the status quo?? go OFF cressida cowell

You know what i'm finding hilarious? The fact that people around me (those few who read or to whom I was raving about it for whole last 6 years) keep telling httyd books are children's and they really mean it. I mean yes, i can joke about it but they seriously think so. One of them told me characters are too black and white, they are strictly kind or strictly evil, no third option, and that's why they are unrealistic. Told me Alvin and the Witch are evil for no reason, they have no tragic backstory that made them villains, and it's not how it works in real life, people always have motivation for their actions. Told me humans in books are too stupid and incompetent to rule tribes/countries and stay alive and such things couldn't happen in reality.
You may start asking why is it hilarious, when it's just sad 'cause i have stupid people around me who can't read by their eyes instead of their ass, or just can't read something longer than a tweetter post (not to mention the books) and do premature conclusions. And yes it is. But the hilarious part is me living in Russia. You know, that Russia, the largest country in the world, with Moscow as a capital, bears as pets and people who never smile. That Russia where it's always cold and people drink vodka to keep warm. That Russia where Putin is the president.
I won't tell you everything Putin did wrong because even a life is not enough for write it down. But let's just talk about the last events: the war in Ukraine. No one will win this war - Ukrainians and Russians are already dead, Ukrainian cities are already distroed, so Russia's world relationships and rep are. Ukraine and Russia both have become more poor and unhappy. So why? Why Putin started it? What he want to achieve by it? What is he gonna do after it? No one knows. Yes, we here in Russia have no idea too. One of my favorite political YouTube channels has a joke rubric "guess what's going on in Kremlin's mind" and they practically never guess. Putin just... do things. And that things aren't good for people or for him, they aren't even logical, they just ruin everyone's life. He is just evil, for no reason, like the cartoon villain. Even Alvin has more reasons to be evil than him. I mean Alvin at least lost some of his limbs...
So when someone in my surrounding is trying to tell me something in my favourite books is "not realistic enough" i just laugh in their face 'cause, dude, we live in Russia! Everything is possible! As you prefer, there is no impossible, only improbable, but you know, in a bad way.
Why do i even bring it up? Oh, our government just has broken another bottom. Putin announced mobilization (that means they will make all men over 18 go and die in their meaningless war) yesterday, and i were on demonstration against it (and police beat us again, but hey! at least I'm not arrested, lucky me) and made antiwar flyers, and got green ribbons ready (it's antiwar simbol) again (i were doing it after the war started), because you know, i don't want my male relatives, friends and teachers go there and die.
But all we are doing is useless. We can't stop them. We couldn't even save only one person from prison last year (if you're interested, google Alexey Navalny)! And now I'm doing it again but... Does it really makes sense? I'm furious, frustrated, depressed and exhausted now, and my hands are sinking. I'm only 18 but i can feel my country is sticking and dying and so do i.
In childhood we read books about heroes and we are sure we will be heroes too one day, and I'm not an exclusion, i did too. I were reading httyd books since my 12, and always wanted to be like Hiccup, a person, who uses his mind instead of muscles and makes people follow him by his words. This is the type of power i always wanted to have. And now i see that it really reflected on my personality: I'm arguing with people, trying to change their minds by logic arguments, question my own beliefs and looking for the truth. And the thought that i can be more like Hiccup really supports me, he is still my hero after 6 years. And i know one of his most important distinguishing features is that he never gives up. But right now? Right now i don't feel like Hiccup. I feel like Fishlegs in books 9-10. I did right thing but it didn't lead anywhere - everything has become even worse, and now I'm in prison, all my friends are prisoners too, we are ruled by crazy cartoon villain, and i can't change anything.
So does it really costs it? Should I keep trying? Or maybe it's time to give up and go dipper down the fandoms to escape from reality? I don't know. I'm loosing hope.
Sorry for this stream of thoughts, I just need to merge these feelings somewhere.

YES! The disappearance of such a huge number of predators in such a short time would destroy the ecosystem not only of the archipelago, but presumably of the whole world, because just imagine the increase in the number of insects that spread diseases, fish that would just eat absolutely everything in the ocean, herbivores that would eat everything that grows. It would be a catostrophe of the dinosaur extinction level!
So in modern life Hiccup would be an ecologist, change my mind
Httyd books realisation
I just realised that hiccup was right not to kill all dragons, not only from an emotional/moral standpoint, but also logical standpoint. Any ecosystem is an interconnected web. There are clearly many dragons in the archipelago. Taking out a part as massive as all the dragons could be potentially catastrophic. I don’t know, maybe I’m applying too much logic to a fictional world, but still.

Book Hiccup and Co potential scars n stuff
Finally getting to this post lol
Ok so like i said the other day i wanted to make a post talking about the various kinds of scars and other permanent damage Hiccup and Co could have gotten
Some of these are stated in the books, some are just whats highly likely, and others arent necessarily likely, or even really possible irl
But since this is a fictional series, adding a lil bit of spice, a lil bit of pizzazz to things ya know
Also not everyone scars the same, not everyones skin reacts to same to stuff
One person might get bitten by a dog and have little to no scarring, while someone else might get a big scar from a papercut
So you can go bigger, smaller, you dont have to include any of this at all
These are just what seem likely (and interesting) to me, for anyone who might want a bit of inspiration lol
Putting this under a cut because it might be long and also theres going to be images of various kinds of scars n stuff, as well as spoilers so
Alright starting with Hiccup
So in book 1 he was bitten on the calf by a dragon, probably not too deep, but definitely could still leave a scar
Likely would look something like these
Tumblr media Tumblr media
----------
Book 2 the Skullion scratched his chest, and it says that the scar stayed his whole life
Probably looked something like these
Tumblr media Tumblr media
maybe a bit bigger, more jagged if ya want, but definitely similar
----------
Nothing really happened in book 3-4
----------
Book 5 hiccup got a lava burn on his heel, could look like this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
----------
Nothing really books 6-8
----------
Book 9 it said Excellinor scratched up his arm and hands so he could have a bunch of thinner scratchy scarring from that
Cant really find any good reference images for this kind of scarring:/
----------
Book 10 there was the whole Amber-Slavelands-Dragon, i talked about this here, also this is very good fanart :P
Honestly the acid scarring might cover up some of the legs scars from book 5, and book 1 depending on if it was shallow enough so
----------
Book 11 theres the Vampire Spydragon, the thing bit him twice so it definitely left a scar
Probably would look like these, except 2 deeper spots where it left its teeth
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
----------
Book 12 theres nothing really specific but Cressida does draw him with some scratches across his face so that could leave some scarring as well
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think these are in book 11 too but
----------
And those are whats mentioned in the books
He also probably had a bunch of random other smaller scars, whether from dragon scratches, bites, people trying to kill him, getting cut on branches, rocks, etc
-----------------------------------------------
Now as for things other things that also could have caused skin changes, not specifically just scars
Hiccup has at least 1 black eye from before book 10 to book 12
And while black eyes arent permanent, theres something called hemosiderin staining which can be
"Hemosiderin staining can essentially be regarded as a very severe form of bruising. Staining happens in areas where a significant amount of bruising has occurred as a result of severe injuries, hemorrhages or, in certain cases, after a particularly invasive surgery.
When damage occurs, the surrounding tissue is flooded with blood and a bruise forms. The more severe the trauma, the more blood that leaks into surrounding tissues, signifying a greater presence of hemosiderin."
And for the most part this isnt a permanent thing, but if it lasts for long enough, it essentially tattoos the skin, and so it pretty much just stays
"Over time, certain hemosiderin stains will fade naturally as the body slowly uses up the stored iron. This hands-off process can take several months or even years to completely remove all traces of the stain. Generally, stains that last more than 12 months cause permanent marks as the skin has essentially been tattooed."
And normally this happens in the lower legs, or places with poor circulation but
This is fiction and i think it would be interesting if something like that happened due to the repeated black eye Hiccup had
It could look something like this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Technically these are birthmarks but you get the idea
Actual hemosiderin staining can be reddish, brownish, bluish, look like an actual bruise, etc
----------
On the arm where the Vampire Spydragon bit him, could also consider some discoloration around where the teeth left in would have been, whether just a darker color, or some permanent purple staining
Also could be some purple at the ends of his fingers on his left hand, his left ear, just like some of the extremities on his left side ya know
I dont know if its realistic but I think itd be interesting
Like these
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Except this wouldnt be because something wrong with circulation or a disease or something, just staining from the dragon bite
----------
And general there could be some hyper/hypopigmentation in various spots over his body, there are various causes for that, so its not particularly unlikely
----------
Thats about all i can think of for Hiccup so now onto
-----------------------------------------------
Fishlegs
We never really ever get told anything that could cause scarring but he has eczema, as well as rashes from allergies, so almost definitely he has scarring and discoloration from that
----------
Probably there would be hyper/hypopigmintation, Post-inflammatory pigmentation which is just another form of skin darkening, and something called Lichenification which is caused by chronic scratching and rubbing, looks like this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and it can leave pigmentation that looks like this
Tumblr media
Heres a page that gives some basic info on all of these
----------
Also even in general Fishlegs probably has some rash, redness over his face/arms/legs that comes and goes in different areas due to the eczema and allergies
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
----------
For scarring there would the the usual eczema scarring, as well as probably those scars that can happen when you scratch at scabs and bug bites constantly and they get open and infected, the circle-ish ones, i cant really find a pic unfortunately but kinda like these
Tumblr media
----------
Then there would probably be scarring from being in danger a lot, dragon scratches, bites, rocks scrapes, stuff like that
(Also because we know that whipping and generally hurting the slaves wasnt exactly frowned upon, theres the potential for some scarring from stuff like that, especially because of the fact that he's Hiccups best friend, people alvinandsnotlout might have been extra mean to him so)
----------
Thats pretty much it for Fishlegs so now
-----------------------------------------------
Camicazi
Again we never really get told anything that would leave scarring, and she doesnt have any skin conditions that were told
So she probably just has kinda the general scarring from viking life, being in a war, and also being a mischievous lil shit who likes to cause problems lol
----------
She also could have some hyper/hypopigmentation spots across her body
-----------------------------------------------
And thats pretty much it
This took a lil bit longer than i had intended :p
But i hope yall find this interesting, hopefully i didnt miss anything major but yeah
----------
Just some general stuff for references
This site has some pretty good pictures of a lot of different skin conditions, and articles about a bunch of stuff as well
This one similar to the last
This has a lot of random different scar pictures
This is a site for various textures and they have a section for human skin
I might add onto this if i find any other good sites but for now thats it

YES YES THIS!
Book Hiccup is my fucking hero! Have you ever watched fictional character and thought "i don't want you to become real and solve all our problems, you have your own, but i really REALLY want people know about you and follow your ideas bc it's exactly what we need right now"? Yes this is what i think watching Hiccup. He is fucking the best and i want more people to know about this books.
I LOVE an idea that knowing foreign languages saved his and his friends lifes so many times, and it really is poetic how the one who spent his whole life trying to understand other cultures and languages (let's not forget that Hiccup learned Dragonese by just listening how dragons were speaking) and exploring other spicies and nations become a King instead of the one who was too arrogant to see differences and get them or try more than once (like, Alvin never tried to learn Dragonese again after book 3). And this speech is culmination of everything Hiccup was fighting for, and the fact that he speaks language of his apponent is like icing on the cake.
Tumblr media
Let’s talk about this moment from How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury, shall we?
See, the thing that has always struck me about Hiccup speaking in Dragonese is the fact that, nine times out of ten, he doesn’t really need to. Throughout the series, it is clearly shown that almost every single dragon Hiccup meets can understand Norse, even if they cannot speak it themselves, and every other Viking gets on fine training and working with dragons without ever needing to speak in the dragons’ own language. Consider the beginning of How to Cheat a Dragon’s Curse, in which Hiccup attempts to get the Sabre Tooth Driver Dragons to help the Pirate Training Programme boys by speaking to them in Dragonese, only for Snotlout to barge in and yell-and-whip them into following orders, speaking only in Norse. This is just one example of how Cressida shows us that in everyday life, actively speaking in Dragonese doesn’t really help Hiccup all that much.
Of course, understanding what the dragons are saying themselves is a different matter: it allows Hiccup insight into what Toothless is thinking and feeling, and indeed has saved his life numerous times when he came across dragons that could pose a threat to him. Additionally, he has repeatedly managed to get out of scrapes by manipulating the dragons he encounters through speech when they were unlikely to have been among the dragons that understood Norse (the Monstrous Strangulator in How to Be a Pirate, for example, had probably never even met humans since being placed in the cave by Grimbeard).
However, while speaking and understanding Dragonese is clearly incredibly useful, when it comes to ensuring that dragons understand what Hiccup is saying, then like I said, nine times out of ten it is shown that speaking to them in their own language isn’t necessary - and arguably, if both humans and dragons generally understand Norse, then in some cases it would seem most logical to speak in Norse, wouldn’t it? I’m sure almost all the dragons Hiccup addresses in his speech here would understand him speaking in his own language, and even if not then there would be enough dragons there who understood to fill in all the rest.
So why does Hiccup do it? Why, in every single exchange with a dragon Hiccup ever has, does he bother to speak in Dragonese?
The answer is simple: it is generally accepted that speaking to someone in their own language is a sign of respect.
Look, I live in England, and while I am proud of my country on a lot of issues, language is not one of them. My foreign language education at school has been patchy at best: we only began getting any foreign language lessons at all when I was about seven or eight, and while we had timetabled French lessons at middle school, for the first three years we suffered from a hugely inconsistent teacher. At high school the only foreign language options available for GCSE were French and German, and most people only took one of these to complete what was called the English Baccalaureate, rather than because we had been filled with passion about foreign languages. While the picture is not as bad all over the UK (I went to very small country schools with limited resources, whereas my city cousins had teachers available for language lessons since they started primary education), the general sloppiness of UK foreign language education compared to the foreign language education in place in other countries has left us apologetically relying on the impeccable English of foreigners to get by whenever we venture anywhere beyond our borders.
This is something that has always really frustrated me, not only because I feel naturally vulnerable when I can’t understand everyone around me, but also because every time I’ve ever relied on someone switching to my language for us to be able to communicate it has felt like an insult to them. English is such a widely spoken language that as a country we’ve become lazy. It is because of all this that I am choosing to study French at A Level, and potentially at university, because I so desperately want to be able to show my respect by putting in the effort to speak to someone in their own language.
Hiccup? He understands this. He, at a very young age, realised that the best way to show respect to the dragons he loved was to speak with them, not just to them, using their own unique language. This is evident throughout the series - why else would he work with dragons and train them through speech when he could just as easily make himself understood in Norse? He even speaks to Stormfly and the Wodensfang in Dragonese, despite knowing that they can speak Norse themselves. It all harks back to Hiccup’s fundamental belief in equality - if dragons can put in the effort to understand Norse, he can put in the effort to understand Dragonese.
This is something I find extremely cool in and of itself: the demonstration of the power of language and the portrayal of such a humble and compassionate hero in a children’s series is amazing. However, I also love the significance of this simple, everyday choice by Hiccup in his wider message and ambitions for his kingdom. There is a quote from A Hero’s Guide to Deadly Dragons that really sheds light on this, just after Hiccup discovers that Stormfly can speak Norse: “Long ago, the bards say, dragons and men spoke together as happily as you or I. Now, Hiccup was one of the only people he knew who spoke Dragonese, and although dragons generally understand Norse (which they call ‘lumpentongue’) Hiccup had never before met a dragon who could speak it.”
Clearly, when the rift grew between humans and dragons, their skills of communication dwindled. Eventually, humans were so sure of their superiority and so powerful over dragons that they stopped putting in any effort to converse with the dragons as equals. It was down to the dragons to understand the humans - why would it ever be the other way around? We even know that Stoick banned the speaking of Dragonese. All of the glory of the original Kingdom of the Wilderwest fizzled out into everything that Hiccup knew was wrong, with slavery and inequality rife. Yet the simple speaking of Dragonese is one of the clearest and most powerful ways that Hiccup tried to reverse this and build a better world, even from the very beginning, at ten years old, when he knew from the start that he wouldn’t be the sort of person to train his hunting dragon by mindlessly yelling at it, but instead by speaking in its own language.
Dear Thor, there’s so much in this. This series is so deep and important and powerful. And never has this beautiful message been more evident than in the moment in How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury when Hiccup asks Stormfly to translate his speech.
For one thing, it makes it very clear that Hiccup is speaking to Furious, appealing directly to his enemy with a message of respect, compassion and love, in the only way he can. Most of all, Hiccup’s choice here means that the dragons are forced to listen to the human voice, and the humans are forced to listen to the dragon voice.
This is the speech that ends the war, and begins a new era, one with a future that is brighter and better, and Hiccup chooses not to use his own language to gain power, but to begin this new future alongside a dragon, with the two languages intertwined and equal.
It’s poetic. It’s beautiful. It’s powerful. And it makes me love him all the more.
