it feels like J Helzer Jr in GUE 5 is an attempt to grapple with Bad Enders directly. Compared to the more subtly written cast, he comes across as melodramatic and whiny. Even characters with similar anxietys and fears like Mel and Astrid are put off by his attempted monologues about the profound realization about life that he had in his own series. He's given the ability to completely change his form, but as we see, his change or realization from part 2 meant nothing. He's the same no matter what his special ultra tecnique form is. He's a more nuanced look at the same thing: it's easy to feel like you've solved life after having an epiphany like he has at the end of Bad Enders, but they never feel permanent. They feel embarrasing later, like you let go of a balloon only for it to fart around the room and shrivel up at your feet. "that's it?".
Based on your Maturity Comic, it seems like that's a pretty big fear. You dislike Bad Enders for being a bit childish, too earnest and clumsy and trying too hard, exactly like Helzer still is here. But for that reason he's my favourite character of yours by a mile. He feels so much more "real" in his cringe attempts to be meaningful that ultimately mask a huge insecurity. Perhaps despite your intentions, it's made me appreciate Bad Enders more for exactly the reasons you dislike it. And I hope we eventually, far off into the future, get to see Helzer find whatever he's looking for
This is a very perceptive analysis! Great work.
I talk about this kind of thing a little bit in a patreon-exclusive behind-the-scenes video, if people are curious to hear my thoughts on the matter (and the creation of GUE 4 generally). Check it out here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/101145625

GUE CHAPTER 4: LIVING DEAD
[But first: a brief message from the creator, which would have appeared BEFORE the comic, if I didn't just barely slide in under tumblrs 30 image limit]
Hello Everyone,
I was in the process of inking this comic when I suffered my debilitating hand injury, which set me back nearly a year. Even before I injured myself, I never intended for GUE 4 to take this long— and so in the interest of expediting it’s release, I took some shortcuts in the inking process through the use of generative AI.
Hah! Just kidding. But now it sounds less bad to say that I did save time by using modified pencilwork in place of inks, and the result is an end product that is decidedly a little rough.
I promise, nobody is upset about this as much as I am; I really wanted to present everyone with a perfect end product. But creative stuff like this has a half-life, and as much as I am proud of my work on GUE 4, I am ready to move on and get to work on other projects. (Maybe even… GUE 5? )
If it makes you feel better, just pretend that I’m the Thief And The Cobbler guy, and that GUE 4 is merely an unfinished masterwork pieced together after my untimely death at the hands of Disney gestapo. (Or whatever actually happened to him-- It’s funnier if I don’t look it up. Haha. Parody. Don’t sue me Disney)
And please, don’t freak out when you get to page 5. I started using a new drafting method while working on this comic, and I promise the art gets cleaner quickly. In fact, I think an adapted version of the rough inking method I used here can actually be used to in the future for faster turnaround, without sacrificing quality. Many exciting adventures await.
My deepest thanks for your support. Please enjoy GUE part 4.

I always really like that trans girl in a frat piece bc I'm a trans OSU student and columbus boy. It is a very gay city i know there are trans affirming frats. Also not affirming ones but the affirming ones are the point here
Thank you for the kind words. As a cis person I am always a little worried that one of my jokes about trans people will cross a line or be construed as offensive, so I always like hearing when a joke resonates well with a trans person.
I also went to college in Ohio (Ohio Wesleyan), and I have a certain fondness for the state despite its total hostility to pedestrians. (My novella TMWWWBSASATWI is set there) The unexpectedly good square pizza makes up for the unexpectedly vomitrocious chili

Hey, I love your art -- I was wondering if you ever posted your illustration for Kafka's "A Hunger Artist" on here? It's really evocative and gorgeously framed, and I find myself thinking of it frequently!!
Tumblr media
Thank you for the kind words. A Hunger Artist by Franz Kafka is one of my favorite short stories of all time, and it’s a very quick read. You can read it right here:
https://www.kafka-online.info/a-hunger-artist.html
Go ahead, I’ll wait here.
I’d like to take us opportunity to talk a little bit about the story, if I may.
Although there are a couple different interpretations of the story's meaning, it unambiguously read to me as an allegory for the plight of the creative, likely drawing from Kafka’s own experience. The ‘starving artist’ comparison is obvious, but there’s much more to it than that. In a departure from most other depictions in media, the plight of the artist is not depicted as something noble or redemptive, but as a sort of self-destructive madness. The hunger artist dies alone and in obscurity, his impact on the world ultimately being completely marginal and insubstantial. When questioned about why he chose a life like this, he reveals that he doesn’t even enjoy fasting, he simply couldn’t find any food he liked. That is to say, a true creative does not select this kind of self destructive lifestyle because they enjoy it; rather, it is because they cannot possibly bear to do anything else. Kafka himself, It should be mentioned, supposedly despised pretty much every job he ever had.
As some of you may know, I developed severe tendinitis a couple months ago. Mentally, September was probably the worst months of my entire life. I reflected on this story a lot –I had wrought my own self destruction, and for what? A couple of bucks? A few comics that i’ll become embarrassed of in a year’s time anyway? Unsure about my prospects for recovery, I became incredibly depressed.
But having been starved of the ability to write or draw, I had a genuine epiphany. Standing at the corner of Boston liquors in Allston, I resolved that I would muster the strength to endure this, regardless of how long it took, because what awaited me at the end was nothing short of the greatest prize a person could ask for: That very thing derided by Kafka –the life of an artist.
There is no greater pleasure than making art. I mean that genuinely, I mean that literally. No, it isn’t noble, no, it isn’t redemptive, but in a totally hedonistic and self-serving way it is simply the greatest thing that life can offer, ambrosia in the mouth, better than sex, better than drugs, better than anything that money can buy, and I feel pity for anyone unable to experience it. I am not being hyperbolic, I am not being metaphorical. I am stating this in the plainest of terms, having lived a life without it for the last couple of months.
So although my personal relationship to the story has changed in the past couple months, Kafka was right about one thing; nothing else tastes good, at least not by comparison. We must imagine the hunger artist happy.

If it’s not too rude to ask, what’s the status of the GUE? On the back burner? Dead? Something big in the works?
chapter 4 is 30 pages long, completely sketched out and just needs to be inked. It would've been out right now if it wasn't for my hand injury, but I am gathering my strength and I'm going to do my best to throw together a rough ink job and get it out as soon as I can.
It's not on the backburner, I promise! I'm just an idiot who likes to bite off more than he can chew. I am in love with this project and have no plans of stopping anytime soon.

Some of your comics remind me of super early Sam Hyde/MDE skits. Like 2012 and before then. It’s great! Keep it up.
this is like telling someone their work reminds you of Hitler's paintings

My Book
In case anyone here doesn’t know, in addition to comics I also write comedic short stories now and then. The one I’m most proud of is my illustrated novella, TMWWWBSASATWI; if you’re a fan of my work, and want to check out something more long form, please give it a read!

(I’m only getting around to promoting it here now because I just discovered that for the past year and half it had been missing some of the pictures??? lol. The linked version is fixed though)
