More knocking it out of the park: in 2.07 the flashback when Rosamund Pike plays Moiraine as completely different than we’ve ever gotten to see her so far and yet it feels wholly in character and immediately your heart breaks like “Oh, this is who she really is, I’ve spent the last two seasons with just a fragment of her, this serious, semi-miserable duty-bound shroud she’s been forced to wear over the rest of who she is”.

and then the double gut punch of the end of that scene, Sophie Okonedo and Pike just staring at each other completely devastated but both so honor bound they’re immediately accepting the loss of all their joint dreams for this new reality/ this new calling, and the worst part is that willingness to accept the loss in the face of duty is part of what they love about each other. They’re both just like “Oh. So this is what it will be. Oh” and your heart breaks even further oh that scene killed me

i think the WOT show just did such a good job of making the characters feel so grounded and real and like, moving past classic fantasy beats to touch more universal experiences so you feel connected to the characters during the utterly unrelatable high fantasy sequences

like I already blathered on about moiraine's cigarettes, it's such a wonderful moment that Pike gave her all to, like we have all come home from college and found that old pack of cigs (or that album you weren't supposed to buy or that joint or whatever your version was!) hidden away in our sock drawer and taken a moment to savor the memory of when we were young and invincible

or this vulture recap waxing poetic about how nice it is to have a scene that starts with Lan pissing on a tree and the humanity of that

or my other personal favorite, when Anvaere yelled at Moiraine that she was their mother through and through and I needed 0 context to go "oh shit," because don't we all know exactly what it means when your sibling tells you that you are exactly like your parent during a fight??

and then moiraine stomps over to slam the door, like, THAT IS THE UNIVERSAL SIBLING FIGHT MOVE, IT IS INSTANTLY RECOGNIZABLE

Also a small thing I noticed is that all through the first season whenever Moiraine mounts her horse Lan automatically comes to her to use his hands as a mounting block for her, then also while she’s in the air quickly grabs her cloak to fan it out behind her- maids of honor should be required to take lessons from this man he’s so quick to ensure Moiraine has a good drape on her train

and there’s something that’s just so tender and caring and weirdly regal about it, he’s just so quick to attend to her and make sure she’s comfortable and looks like a boss

and then after she leaves him with Alanna is the first time where she goes to mount her horse by herself while Lan just stands there gobsmacked

but also I like to believe maybe just a little like “See Moiraine, you need me! ENJOY SPENDING THE REST OF YOUR LIFE HAVING TO DO THREE WARM UP BOUNCES EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU WANT TO MOUNT YOUR HORSE, LIKE SOME KIND OF SHORT IDIOT”

I just want show Moiraine to have like the worst time with the Aiel, by which I mean I don’t want them to actually do anything to her but I want them to acknowledge that she isn’t just any old Treekiller, she’s Lady Treekiller of House Treekiller and former potential heir to the dead tree throne

Like I just want them to be like so fucking rude about it but still be intimidated by the fact that she’s an Aes Sedai so they don’t try anything but they really want to and the whole time she’s just staring off into the distance really defeated because honestly she can’t even blame them because she hates her family too

I know us Mo & Lan fans are collectively hurting after 2x02, but can we take a moment to fully appreciate the soul-crushing scene in 2x01 where Moiraine, fully aware of the absolute futility of it all, attempted to channel in a last ditch effort to save herself and Lan from certain death - and there was the briefest moment of shock and hope on her face until she realized the weaves were actually Verin's?

I have to say, after digesting it a bit and rewatching episode one, I think they made the right call for Moiraine/Lan. I know there's been a lot of criticism about them behaving like two children - and it's not not wrong - but Tomas and even the others make it clear why this is happening. (Not talking about book spoiler-y other things obviously.)

Moiraine and Lan haven't had to really talk to eachother for 20 years. They've relied on the bond the way you or I rely on talking things out. It would be like losing your sight or your hearing. Of course Lan's frustrated! Of course Moiraine is closing off! They don't know how to be together without the bond! It would be weird if they weren't struggling, these two are shifty, stoic, stone-cold fucking weirdos who are now traumatized!!

Yes, BOTH of them.

Moiraine has lost her connection to the source which is directly compared to being assaulted, and Lan is completely helpless. He can't just fix it. He can't fight it. He can't even support her because she won't let him. Meanwhile it's like he's lost a limb and everybody is telling him that it isn't about him but it is. It's about both of them, grieving the loss of this powerful connection they had.

Mentally I'm still here.

Sam's acting... chef's kiss. His blind panic. His terror. His gentle sigh at the end, caressing her cheek tenderly, like she's made of glass.

And Riley's delivery of that line... Gazing all over his face. That tender whisper. Even down to the way she closed her eyes in relief. Each time I rewatch this scene, I swear I can almost feel my heart sing. It's like the moment Daisy woke up in his arms is the only moment she was truly, genuinely happy and at peace in this entire episode. And that's so fucking sad.

Also I keep forgetting to mention. Perfect song choice. Love the Bellamy Brothers.
