ya'know, now that I'm a professor and professional and stuff, I feel like I shouldn't do individual commissions. But I really want to! It's not even like a "this is an emergency, i need money" thing, it's purely for fun and to interact with people

I really, really want to do some painted icons this summer. I just really want to do some rendering. I've always been sooooo bad at marketing myself, though. I don't need to jack the prices up super high, even. I just want to PAINT stuff. I miss painting so badly and there's a special joy in trying to capture someone else's character and succeeding. Idk...I want to do ones in this style (like D&D or PF2e tokens). Maybe 80-100USD$ a pop?

NEVER STOP HAVING TRUE VISION PT. 2 | Sketchbook 2/2022 Another favorite. I was on fire that day. The design, the shape language, the mouth shapes, and the texture of the pen are all working.

NEVER STOP HAVING TRUE VISION PT. 1 | Sketchbook 2/2022 This is one of my favorite sketchbook spreads of all time. This is one of my very favorite spreads, ever. My bread and butter will always be intense emotions, mouth shapes, and comically enormous sharp teeth. As I drew these strange clairvoyant animals, they started to transform.  I love the idea of transformation as a metaphor for catharsis.

Sketchbook 1/2022. Hey, it's me! Some self portraits from when I had really long hair. I had an undercut all the way around and really long hair on top. I've since shaved my head and liberated myself, lol. The hair was handsome, but I hated the upkeep. I've never really liked doing self portraits or fixating on what I might look like in a different form. I also feel strange talking about myself in any other context than some skill I am pursuing. I think I'm slowly warming up to the idea (maybe). This was enjoyable.

Sketchbook 2018. I was trying to figure out the construction of my characters' heads for my 4th year film. Construction (3-Dimensional drawing) is one of my greatest loves in art. I have studied it mindfully for about 11 years. A head is just a piece of architecture with planes that behave according to the rules of perspective and physics that we observe every day. I love being able to sculpt with my drawings, and the feeling of confidence of having mastered the rules. Every single animation production I've worked on has asked me to solve some difficult drawing problems for them. I've given a lot of lectures about this subject to my CalArts and Community College students this year, and their passion and curiosity about the subject always ignites me. It's something you're just expected to "figure out" as you progress as an artist, but there are rules! You can learn! Here's me just flexing and having a blast, lol.

Sketchbook 6/2019. A long time ago, I did a lot of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon fan art. I had a charmander character and a cyndaquil character. A few years ago, I decided to sketch the charmander again. I was quite pleased with the style I arrived at for her. I've still got some PMD art left in me.

Old Comic, like 2018 or 2019. I was trying to figure out the relationship between my film characters. This is a liberal use of the word "comic", it's definitely more of a storyboard with some bounding boxes missing. As far as I'm concerned, proper comic artists are wizards that practice unknowable magic. This is back when the grandma (older coyote w cigarette) was less of a cartoonishly evil caricature and more of just a deeply flawed being. I wanted to explore how no one is 100% evil or 100% good, and the role of Karma in all of that. Karma was represented by a different character. The story initially centered around how the younger coyote dealt with the fact that her grandmother was a bad person, despite caring for her and protecting her. I only had 6 minutes though, and having so much emotional depth wasn't conducive to brevity. Also, getting shot in the dick is funny.

Initial Owl Sherriff designs from 2019, I think. I never picked a name for her (maybe I will someday). Man, I really struggled with design. It was like trying to find a book on a shelf while blindfolded. I would make decisions, and sometimes they would work, and sometimes they wouldn't. But I had no idea WHY something did or didn't work, which was immensely frustrating. Eventually I came to develop my own internal "language" of understanding design through lots of life drawing and having a few breakthroughs and feverishly writing them down. Reading lots of textbooks and revisiting the principles of design helped a lot, too. It's easier for me now, but I think it might always be a weak point.

My god, Instagram really hates sketchbook spreads. There's a LOT of value in how the entire two pages are composed, and that's my favorite thing about working in a book. Whenever I post a full spread, it gets totally quashed. That website is such a dumpster fire, and yet everyone is on it...I really miss gallery websites. In 2007 I would log on to DeviantArt and just spend hours looking through galleries and relishing in the detail. That's completely gone with modern day "consume as much as possible" social media culture.
Tumblr has such a good blend with the ability to form images into blocks and then ZOOM IN on them. I have so much art to post and so many insufferable text posts to make
