Student Housing Under Construction at USC Health Sciences Campus
American Campus Communities has broken ground on another student housing development at the USC Health Sciences Campus in Boyle Heights.
Grading and shoring activities have commenced at 1630 N. San Pablo Street, where the Austin, Texas-based developer has received entitlements for the construction of a six-story building that will feature 95 units of graduate student housing and 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retails pace.  All of the new apartments will be four-bedroom suites, creating a total of 272 beds with central kitchens and shared bathrooms.
The new housing, designed by KTGY Architecture + Planning, will incorporate 3,500 square feet of lounges and study rooms, and outdoor amenities including a roof deck and a central courtyard.
Completion of 1630 San Pablo is expected in late 2020.
The project is the second student housing complex built by American Campus Communities at the USC Health Sciences Campus, following a nearby 177-unit development on Alcazar Street.
Both of those projects will flank a 200-room Hyatt House hotel, which is also under construction.

Vegan handbag brand Gunas to launch beauty line
Huw Hughes
|
Thursday, June 20 2019
US vegan handbag company Gunas has announced it will be launching a beauty line after receiving 250,000 dollars from a private investor in a seeding round.
The company said it will use the investment to produce 100 percent plant-based artisanal beauty bars, starting with pure olive oil soap in floral fragrances and volcanic ash. In addition to the money, the anonymous angel investor will provide Gunas with trademarking help, digital marketing and will help expand sales in Asia.
“Beauty soaps have a huge opportunity in terms of being animal-free and formulated with pure ingredients,” Gunas founder Sugandh Agrawal said in a statement. “This new direction is an extension of our core values of inner beauty inside and out, without harming any living being.”
Founded in 2009 by Sugandh Agrawal, Gunas creates cruelty-free handbags which are hand-crafted in South Korea, in sweatshop-free facilities. Over the past four years, sales of Gunas handbags and accessories went up by around 30 percent annually, the company said. In June last year, the brand won the Macy's Best Retail Bag Award in New York City at the Independent Handbag Awards.

Machado's agent denies White Sox offered seven-year, $175 million deal
Hours after ESPN's Buster Olney reported the Chicago White Sox offered Manny Machado a seven-year, $175 million deal, Machado's agent referred to the report as "inaccurate and reckless" on Wednesday.
Dan Lozano sharply criticized Olney and USA Today's Bob Nightengale for their reporting on Machado's free agency situation. Nightengale tweeted on Wednesday that the White Sox made the offer two weeks ago and see no reason to bid against themselves.
"The truth is that their reports on the details of the White Sox level of interest in Manny are completely wrong," Lozano said in a statement.
Lozano strongly asserted that violations of the Collective Bargaining Agreement may have occurred.
"I don't know if their sources are blatantly violating the Collective Bargaining Agreement by intentionally misleading them to try and affect negotiations through the public or are just flat out lying to them for other reasons," Lozano said.
"I am well aware that the entire baseball universe; fans, players, teams and media members alike; are starved for information about this free agent market for all players, including Manny. "But I am not going to continue to watch the press be manipulated into tampering with, not just with my client, but all of these players' livelihoods as they have been doing this entire offseason."
Machado and Bryce Harper are the two marquee players of the free agent class and both remain unsigned.
Numerous reports claim the White Sox are among the pursuers of both players. The Philadelphia Phillies have also been mentioned as being interested in both players.
But progress toward a deal has been glacier slow this offseason and Lozano sees it as part of the reason for inaccurate reporting.
"The absence of new information to report is no excuse to fabricate "news" or regurgitate falsehoods without even attempting to confirm their validity and it is a disservice to baseball fans everywhere when the media does just that," Lozano said.
Machado, who played his first six seasons with the Baltimore Orioles before a mid-July trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers, had been reported to be seeking a contract in the 10-year, $300 million-plus range.
Machado, who has played shortstop and third base in the majors, is a career .282 hitter with 175 home runs and 513 RBIs. He twice has been in the top five in Most Valuable Player voting.
Last season, he hit .297 with a career-high-tying 37 home runs and career-high 107 RBIs combined between the Orioles and Dodgers. He also sported a .367 on-base percentage, above his .335 career average, and his .538 slugging percentage exceeded his career figure of .487.

Drink These: Big Bar’s New Winter Cocktails
If you love holiday libations then you’re in luck as L.A. has no shortage of festive winter cocktails. But of the many offerings this year, the ones that really stood out to me were the ones off Big Bar’s winter cocktail menu which debuted just yesterday. Leave it to bar manager Cari Hah and her team to take a season of good cheer and amplify it with drinks that will give you the warm fuzzies. A chocolate mint fizz, a light and frothy nog, and a Jager toddy! Christmas came early!
I was fortunate enough to get a sneak taste of the drinks, running through the entire 13-drink menu with fellow cocktail enthusiast Daniel “Thirsty in LA” Djang. Couldn’t ask for a better drinking companion!
Here were my favorites off the new menu.
Peppermint Cocoa Fizz
Peppermint Cocoa Fizz: Woodford Reserve bourbon, Wondermint, Fernet Branca, vanilla, creme de cacao, egg white, cream, fizz
Who says a wintry peppermint cocoa cocktail has to be rich and heavy? This ingenious take on a favorite winter treat makes it possible to enjoy it more than once. The sweet creme de cacao is balanced by the bitter mintyness of the Fernet Branca and lightened by the froth of the egg whites and club soda splash. “The peppermint aspect of this cocktail comes from two kinds of mint,” says Cari. “We use Wondermint Liqueur made by Death’s Door Distillery in Wisconsin. This mint flavor is deep and rich and there is also a bit of St George Absinthe which adds to the depth of the liqueur.” On an unrelated note, I want to buy a tub of that Andes peppermint baking chips they sprinkle on top of the foam!
Mount Crumpit
Mount Crumpit: Jameson Black Barrel Whiskey, Lairds Bonded Applejack, Amaro Montenegro, Lustau PX sherry, Miracle Mile Hello Cari Bitters
Named after the mountain that overlooks Whoville atop which the Grinch spends his time scowling at all those annoyingly happy, peppy Whos. This stirred cocktail will make anyone’s heart grow three sizes. A well-balanced and aromatic mix of whiskey, applejack, amaro and sherry, it actually makes me salivate WHILE I’m drinking it.
The Imaginary Monkey Star
The Imaginary Monkey Star: Star anise cardamom syrup, Mt Gay Black Barrel Rum, muddled banana, lemon.
During a time of rich, intense flavors, this banana rum cocktail is a refreshing change of pace with its layers of subtle but interesting flavor combinations. The banana, which is muddled from a strainer, comes forward first with the earthinesss of the anise showing up midpalate. I could drink this all day and night.
Frost Yo’Self
Frost Yo’Self: Star anise cinnamon infused Cointreau, Hennessy Cognac, Redemption Rye, lemon
Imagine yourself sipping on something while sitting under a Christmas tree amid gift wrapper carnage. It would probably be this cocktail you’re enjoying, a spice-infused crusta with the warming flavors of cognac and rye; heavy anise on the nose. By the way, you gotta appreciate how the sugar on the rim here is fine enough to resemble actual frost on the glass.
Apres Ski
Apres Ski: Clove honey, Jagermeister, ginger, pineapple, lemon, served hot
For those who were unlucky enough to catch that damn cold that was going around recently, you’ll totally understand when I say this is the drink your body was seeking out. “As you drink it, the warmth spreads from the drink to your whole body and it’s so comforting,” says Cari and she’s right. That ginger combined with the heat of the cocktail just soothes your body and soul.

Report: Oilers first-round draft pick Philip Broberg to play in Sweden
The Edmonton Oilers 8th overall draft pick will play next season in the Swedish Hockey League, according to Swedish outlet Hockey Sverige.
The article, published on July 5, quoted Skellefteå GM Erik Forssell who said he would be playing next season there.
“We just got that message. That Philip plays with us. It feels good that it is clear. And we are happy that he plays with us this winter,” Hockey Sverige reported Forssell saying.
When the Oilers drafted Broberg, the desire was for him to be playing a lot of minutes and it’s safe to assume that’s what will happen for him.
Broberg was signed to a one-year deal with Skellefteå before the draft, so there was a clear desire from him to play there. His CHL rights were owned by Hamilton.
“I think the most important thing is that when you’re a young player is that you play,” Oilers GM Ken Holland said after the draft. “(If he’s going to be) important on the team over there, then I’ll certainly listen. If he’s going to be a five-six (defenceman) then I think he’s good but he’s best served to be over here.”
Broberg has two years of eligibility in the CHL, so I could foresee a situation where he comes to North America after this season to get a taste of hockey here.
Personally, I would have much rather see him get two full seasons of play here in North America. It’s not to be understated how big of an adjustment it is to the smaller ice rink.
The six-foot, three-inch, 203 lb. left-shot rearguard played for AIK in Swedish Allsvenskan league last season, scoring nine points in 41 games.
So now, let’s see how he continues to progress.

After the end of another lousy October day, what's next for Clayton Kershaw?
LOS ANGELES – He couldn’t say what was in his heart, Clayton Kershaw said, if it was telling him to stay or go, if this was the end here or just another lousy October day here.
An hour had passed since he’d watched the Boston Red Sox win a World Series, with his chin resting on a dugout rail. He’d been had for three home runs in seven innings, three outfielders dangling on outfield walls, another one of those October days, and before that a whole season had passed again, quickly again, like they tend to do anymore.
There’d be no need to pack for a few cold days in Boston. No flight to catch. The creeping inevitability that came with the past week of baseball had caught him. Had caught them all. The Los Angeles Dodgers, winners of six division titles in a row, World Series participants for the last two of those, were again not good enough. They were beat, 5-1, on Sunday night in Game 5, and on another fall night hosted a party they were not invited to.
[Yahoo Store: Get your Boston Red Sox championship gear right here!]
He’d been here 11 years. Eight falls. Now he could choose to go. He has, he said, three days to decide. In the moment, Chase Utley across the room saying he was ready to go be a full-time dad, Kenley Jansen nearby saying he was scheduled for that heart procedure, Yasiel Puig in Spanish saying they’d all go home with regrets, Dave Roberts in the interview room deflecting questions of his own future, Kershaw smiled a sleepy smile and said he simply didn’t know. These were the questions he’d perhaps intended to address while drenched in a happier occasion.
Clayton Kershaw allowed three home runs in what could be his last start for the Los Angeles Dodgers. (Getty Images)
More
Would he start over again here? Would he start over again somewhere else? And what sort of pitcher, at 30, would he be when he got there? Would it be as fun? Would it ever be as familiar? Is it the money? Is it something else? What would his wife, Ellen, want? Where would he raise his children? Could somewhere new live up to his expectations? Could he live up to its?
How does this all go from here?
What is in his heart?
“I don’t know,” he said. “I really don’t.”
About an hour after sunset, the sky having gone from purple-gray to black, Kershaw left the Dodger Stadium mound. He’d pitched seven innings on the final Sunday of October, the final day of the baseball season. He didn’t win. None of them did. A year ago, on the final day of that baseball season, he’d pitched four innings, and he – they – didn’t win that either.
Kershaw crossed the field, managed the stairs into the dugout, sat on the bench. He lay his glove on the bench, his cap on his glove. This was it, he was done pitching, and Roberts’ handshake was welcome but unnecessary. While it had become popular conversation to wonder where his velocity had gone, if it would return, and what sort of pitcher he’d be if it didn’t, he was also the guy who’d posted a 2.73 ERA across 26 regular-season starts, who every day established the professional standard for anyone who bothered to watch, who for a very long time was as good a pitcher many had ever seen.
“Clayton is the Dodgers,” veteran Rich Hill said. “He’s the heart and soul of this organization. When you look at a guy like that, who has put it on the line for so many years and had so much success here, as a Dodger I just hope they do the right thing.”
Over the last six years, the Dodgers are 31-30 in the postseason. (Getty Images)
More
Story Continues
Kershaw watched the Dodgers as they were set down in order by David Price in the bottom of the inning, then stood. Leaving his cap and glove behind, he walked the length of the dugout and turned left. He spoke to no one. No one spoke to him.
They’d once run into a blossoming Houston Astros team. Then a 108-win Red Sox team. They were eliminated on their own field, in front of their own fans, who gave way to Red Sox fans. In the course of those half-dozen NL West titles, the Dodgers also were 31-30 in the postseason, ultimately a win short last year, three short this year, and they threaded some satisfaction from that, though not very much.
“It sucks,” catcher Austin Barnes said.
They’d batted .180 against the Red Sox. Machado helped only a little, batting .182 himself. Cody Bellinger hit .063. Across two World Series, he hit .114. Kershaw’s ERA in two starts was 7.36. Jansen blew two saves. Roberts battled matchups and bullpen management, often paddling against the greater talent, that ending predictably.
The Dodgers will return a decent bet to be good at this again. Corey Seager, their shortstop, will be back. Walker Buehler and Julio Urias, 24 and 22, will be regular starters. A bullpen isn’t so hard to rebuild. Roberts is good at this and it would be a surprise – and a mistake – if he were not back. There’ll be plenty of money to spend. They’ve won without really winning, which remains a problem, and now they start over again.
With Kershaw. Without him. He couldn’t say. Or wouldn’t. He’s due about $70 million over the next two seasons. It is not, yet, the team’s decision whether that – he — is the best way to spend $70 million, but could be if today’s opt-out becomes tomorrow’s negotiation.
“Look, you know, I know the future questions are coming for myself,” Kershaw said. “I don’t want to take away from tonight, obviously, and what everybody is feeling. I never want to put the focus on just me or anything like that. This was a tough one for us tonight. It really was. Myself, personally, you know, it was tough. … I’ve got three days to think about all of that stuff before anything happens. And so it will be an eventful three days for me and I’ll try to figure it out.”
His hair wet from a shower, he walked from the clubhouse, beneath a clock that read 9:15. He hugged a security guard. He waved as he made his way down a quiet hallway, away from a party that raged without him. It would not be him, again. It would not be them.
Another lousy October day.

Legal battle pits Horton Plaza owner against burger joint
Stockdale Capital Partners declined a request to participate in this story, but court documents highlight a different version of events. The firm, in its complaint, argues that Irwantio stopped paying rent in November 2018, did not respond to multiple notices and illegally abandoned its restaurant venue. It’s suing the Irwantio business and Oren Loni, who is listed as a guarantor, for breach of lease and rent owed. A copy of the lease shows that Irwantio agreed to pay minimum rent starting at $112,000 per year and going up to $151,607.52 per year in 2027 — increasing on an annual basis — along with a percentage of gross sales, depending on business. Stockdale did not say how much in total it’s owed.

Elon Musk first envisioned double-decker 405 before tunnel idea
Elon Musk shed some light Thursday on how he arrived at the idea to build privatized, high-speed tunnels for cars and 18-passenger “pods” beneath Los Angeles.
Musk said previously that he used his commute to brainstorm ways to address the traffic congestion he experienced going from his Bel Air home to work at SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne. But before he conjured up the tunneling scheme, Musk had a different idea: Turn the 405 into a double-decker freeway.
“I had a very well thought-out design,” the entrepreneur told Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti at a “fireside chat”—there was no fire, not even a flamethrower—to open the National League of Cities conference, held in Downtown LA.
Multi-level freeway interchanges are a familiar sight in Los Angeles, including an elevated high-occupancy platform of the 110 Freeway. Double-decker freeways have historically presented a seismic risk in other cities like San Francisco. A stacked section of a Bay Bridge on-ramp collapsed in the Loma Prieta earthquake, killing 42 people.
By signing up, you agree to our Privacy Policy and European users agree to the data transfer policy.
Musk said his double-decker would have been “seismically safe,” made of steel and built in pre-fabricated sections.
Extra lanes were added to the 405 freeway—although not in a separate level—when it was widened in a five-year construction project. (Musk was so frustrated with the project’s progress in 2013 he offered to put up money to speed the process.)
But the expansion of the freeway actually made travel times one minute longer as more cars crowded the new routes, a phenomenon transportation planners call “induced demand.”
Musk came to his own realization that adding extra tiers to the 405 was a bad idea after puzzling over how to build off-ramps that wouldn’t get gridlocked.
“The corner pieces were getting tricky,” he said, reasoning that people would have become frustrated exiting the freeway’s multi-leveled lanes.
Tunnels, Musk said, were a better option.
“You have to go 3D,” he said Thursday.
Garcetti asked Musk why he didn't explore the possibility of flying cars (known as “vertical takeoff and landing” vehicles, or VTOLs), but Musk said these vehicles were too loud, dangerous, and vulnerable to weather conditions.
Musk unveiled the tunneling idea in a December 2016 tweet, saying: “Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging...”
As the idea gained traction on social media, Garcetti said he received a text from Musk the next day asking if he needed any permits to start digging.
“[He] texted me the next day saying, ‘Do I need permits for this?’ And I said ‘yes, there are probably going to be some permits that you need,’” Garcetti revealed Thursday, laughing.
Musk reported having “promising conversations” with Garcetti, whose office endorsed the idea in a statement.
Since Musk was building his experimental test tunnel in the city of Hawthorne, where SpaceX is located, he did not need permits from Los Angeles. But Musk’s tunneling venture, which he named the Boring Company, did require approval from Hawthorne’s City Council, which it received in August 2017.
Tumblr media
A map of the broad network of tunnels Musk wants to build in Los Angeles in two phases.
Courtesy the Boring Company
Three months later, in November, the Boring Company applied for permits to start digging a 6.5-mile tunnel parallel to the 405 freeway in the city of Los Angeles. A second phase of the project would add more tunnels close to major destinations such as LA Live, USC, and the NFL stadium in Inglewood.
The Los Angeles City Council voted to consider exempting the project from environmental review. Two neighborhood groups opposed the motion by filing suit against the city.
Experts have been skeptical of Musk’s tunnel idea, noting that the project faces outsize hurdles when it comes to environmental laws and community approval, and is not likely alleviate traffic congestion. Renderings show cars and pods entering and using the tunnels one at a time, much like a freeway on-ramp.
In August, the Boring Company submitted a proposal to the city of Los Angeles to pursue a tunnel from either Los Feliz or East Hollywood to Dodger Stadium, offering fans 4-minute rides to games for $1. A public meeting in August meant to start gathering community input was sparsely attended.
Musk said the Boring Company’s tunnel-boring machine has been digging at a rate of one mile every three months—about the same speed as Metro’s TBMs. The test tunnel is now 6,000 feet long—a little over a mile—and will open to the public for rides in December.

Dodgers 2018 offseason roster breakdown
The Dodgers’ season is over much earlier than expected, and here is a look at the roster heading into the offseason. There are 46 players on the 40-man roster, including six on the 60-day disabled list, split into a few relevant groups.
Free agents (7)
Manny Machado Brian Dozier Yasmani Grandal Hyun-jin Ryu John Axford Daniel Hudson Ryan Madson
The Dodgers have a top-heavy group of free agents, though since Machado and Dozier were acquired midseason they are ineligible to receive a qualifying offer, which is set this offseason at $17.9 million for a one-year deal, per multiple reports. That’s up $500,000 over last year.
A decision will have to be made whether to make a qualifying offer to Grandal, and possibly even Ryu, by the fifth day after the World Series ends. The player(s) have 10 days to accept or decline the offer, and if they sign elsewhere could net the Dodgers draft pick compensation.
Options (2)
Clayton Kershaw has two more seasons remaining on his contract, paying him $32 million in 2019 and $33 million in 2020. He can opt out of his deal and into free agency within three days after the World Series. Should Kershaw opt out, expect him to get a qualifying offer.
“I haven’t made the decision yet,” Kershaw said Sunday night. “We have three days to talk, between us and the Dodgers, see what happens, and we’ll go from there.”
David Freese has a $6 million club option for 2019, with a buyout of $500,000 if it is not exercised.
Under contract (5)

*Jansen can opt out of his contract after 2019.
The five under contract on the 40-man roster total $78.5 million for 2019, $74.625 million toward the competitive balance tax threshold which increases to $206 million next year.
Chase Utley is technically still also under contract for 2019 but in July announced his retirement effective at the end of the season.
Yaisel Sierra is still under contract through 2021, but remains off the 40-man roster, with his salary not counting toward the competitive balance tax.

2019 estimates from MLB Trade Rumors
Yasiel Puig’s contract is up but he still has a year before free agency, making this his first offseason eligible for salary arbitration. If somehow the Dodgers retain all 13 of these players and they earn the projected salaries above, the arbitration gang would total $45.7 million in 2019.
The remainder of the roster is comprised of players with under three years of service time.

Trail Blazers troll Steph Curry while he watches brother Seth Curry
Trail Blazers troll Steph Curry while he watches brother Seth Curry originally appeared on nbcsportsbayarea.com
Warriors guard Stephen Curry used his night off to watch his brother Seth suit up for the Portland Trail Blazers Saturday night. The elder Curry saw LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers walk away with a 114-110 victory, but not before the Blazers got in some good old-fashioned trolling.
They didn't stick to social media, either. On the Trail Blazers' broadcast, a lower-third graphic identified the two-time MVP as "Seth Curry's Brother."
The graphic perhaps should have read "Bad-Luck Charm." Seth Curry finished 0 of 5 from the field -- and 0 of 4 from deep -- against the Lakers on Saturday. But, the elder Curry was able to have another reunion, linking up with ex-Warriors big man JaVale McGee after the game.
The Currys will reunite the day after Thanksgiving at Oracle Arena, when the Warriors host the Blazers in their first matchup of the season.

VA picks developer to put 900 homes for veterans on West LA campus
West L.A. Veterans Collective has been selected to undertake a long-awaited revamp of the sprawling Veterans Affairs campus in West Los Angeles.
The collective will build at least 900 of the 1,200 supportive housing units that the VA has agreed to put on the 400-acre campus along Wilshire Boulevard.
“We look forward to breaking ground on what will be the largest housing facility for homeless and low-income veterans in America,” says U.S. Vets president and CEO Stephen Peck.
The collective is a partnership among Century Housing Corporation, U.S. Vets, and Thomas Safran and Associates.
The first piece of the major project will be repurposing the existing Building 207, which is expected to hold more than 60 units of permanent supportive housing for homeless and chronically homeless senior veterans, according to Peck.
Building 207 will also hold community space, a library, a gym, case management offices and landscaped outdoor space, Peck says. Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2019.
While work is underway on that building, the developers plan to begin community outreach for the remainder of the project. The plan is to mix new construction and reuse of existing structures, as environmental requirements and the VA allow, says Thomas Safran and Associates chairman Tom Safran.
A combination of private and public funds will pay for the transformation.
This campus redevelopment has been in the works for a few years.
That sketch of what the existing VA property could become emerged after the agency settled a lawsuit in 2015 brought by a group of disabled veterans who accused it of misusing the 387-acre property.
The veterans cited decades of use of large chunks of the property for commercial endeavors instead of housing or services for veterans.
A 2016 blueprint for the retooled campus featured housing; employment, legal, and health services; and recreation spaces.

Here are the street closures for the LA Marathon
Thousands of runners will hit LA’s streets Sunday for the 34th Los Angeles Marathon, set to kick off at 6:30 a.m.
That means that for those not participating in the 26.2-mile race, getting around the city could be a challenge Sunday morning.
As in prior years, street closures for the event are extensive, and affect some of LA’s busiest thoroughfares. They’ll begin as early as 2 a.m. Sunday and will primarily affect streets included in the race route.
This is the 10th year since marathon organizers adopted the current route, which starts at Dodger Stadium and concludes in Santa Monica. Along the way, the course winds its way through Downtown before cutting up past Echo Park Lake and over to Sunset Boulevard. Runners then follow the street to Hollywood Boulevard, passing by the Walk of Fame.
The westward route then dips south to the Sunset Strip and then south again to Santa Monica Boulevard. After a quick detour in Beverly Hills, it extends north toward the VA Hospital and cuts west on San Vicente. Finally, runners enter the final stretch on Ocean Avenue and finish the race close to the Santa Monica Pier.

Street closures will end as more runners approach the finish line. Most streets in the Downtown/Dodger Stadium portion of the course will reopen before 10:30, while the area around the Santa Monica finish line will be closed until 9 p.m.
Maps from the Los Angeles Department of Transportation further detail the street closures and locations of traffic officers throughout the day. The city of Santa Monica has more information about the schedule of street closures on its website.
Because the route passes through so many busy areas, service on more than a dozen local bus lines will be impacted by the street closures. Temporary detours are detailed on Metro’s website.
Despite those service interruptions, public transit may be the best way to get to the race if you’re participating or cheering on the runners. Shuttles reserved for racers will make pickups at Santa Monica City Hall and Union Station early Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, Metro will run Expo Line trains every nine minutes for most of the day, to allow spectators to efficiently get to and from the finish line.

Clippers host t-shirt fundraiser, blood drive in honor of Thousand Oaks shooting victims
The Los Angeles Clippers aren’t done honoring the 12 victims of last week’s Thousand Oaks shooting.
They were one of four teams along with the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks to wear “Enough” shirts with the names of the victims on the back after the shooting.
On Monday before taking on the Golden State Warriors, they started selling those shirts with all the proceeds going to the Ventura County Community foundation. In addition, the team joined up with Cedars-Sinai to host a blood drive in Staples Center from 6 p.m. through halftime.
The Clippers gave out tickets to future games against either the Sacramento Kings, Charlotte Hornets and Phoenix Suns to those who donated.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who has been a vocal advocate for gun control, and Clippers coach Doc Rivers both praised the organization’s efforts. Kerr said that while he was happy that the NBA and commissioner Adam Silver supported the teams’ efforts to raise awareness, the government also needed to step up in the discussion. The Warriors coach also had harsh words for those using the Second Amendment as a shield.
Steve Kerr criticized the response to mass shootings and said the Warriors have moments of silence every week. (AP)

”We can’t just keep spewing out the same garbage about, ‘Well, it’s the Second Amendment; it’s the price of freedom.’ Give me a break,” Kerr said. “We don’t have freedom if we can’t walk into a bar, a movie theater, a concert without being worried of getting murdered. So I’m glad that the NBA has backed up the players, I’m glad that Adam Silver came out and supported the players for wearing the shirts and I support the players. We’re all in this together, we just want people to be safe and so I’m all in.”
Rivers echoed Kerr’s sentiment about speaking up. The Clippers coach said it was one of his proudest moments as part of the organization.
“Instead of doing a moment of silence and saying nothing, we said something,” Rivers said before the game. “We wore something, and more importantly, we spoke about it.”
The public address announcer reiterated the Rivers’ statement on behalf of the team.
“The Clippers are using their collective voice right now to tell the world that gun violence is never OK,” the team’s public address announcer, Eric Smith, said.
