ALL THE TRIMMINGS (and we aren’t talking turkey!)
The construction of your home and the details embodied in the finishing of it are very important to setting the aesthetic style of your home. Traditionally modern and contemporary style homes have very sleek, minimalist trim packages, where more traditional and transitional homes will have more elaborate trim work. Trim work – or the mouldings around your doors, windows, ceilings and floors are what define your rooms and give your home a ‘finished’ look.
By adding trim work or a ‘moulding package’ to your home, you can create interesting detail, define spaces and increase the value of your home, with very little investment. Many homes, depending on the era they were built, have lots of trim work and others have very little. There is middle ground.
Without question, a door is always trimmed out. This piece of moulding hides the area between the door jam and the wall material, giving it a nice finished look. If this is the only trim work you have in your home, then you are really missing out.
If you have nothing other than door trim, at least consider adding baseboard moulding. The addition of this moulding creates a clean break between your wall colour and the floor. Baseboards also protect the walls from scuffs and damage from cleaning and vacuuming. Without this moulding, your room will look unfinished. Baseboards come in a variety of sizes and profiles. Consider the overall ‘look’ of your home when choosing a profile (style).
Next, trim out the windows. Believe it or not, by adding this simple trim you will make your windows appear larger. Before adding the trim, the window jamb (the vertical area around the window) was probably painted the same colour as the wall. This area now becomes part of the trim and should be painted the same colour as the trim. A clever way to enlarge the look of a window is to add a mock transom. This will allow you to hang your drapery higher up on the wall, giving the sense of a larger window, thus a brighter room.
If you really want to define your space, add crown moulding. You can add crown moulding to all areas of your home, but some people choose to use it to define the more formal spaces in their home, like the entry, living room and dining room. In the case of crown moulding, don’t be afraid to go big. (Go big or go home as they say).
Mouldings and trim work should be painted in a satin or semi-gloss paint. These sheens are more durable than the standard eggshell used on walls. Although high gloss paints are the most durable they tend to be a bit too shiny for this application and can end up looking like plastic.
Give your home the attention it deserves. It will reward you in many ways.

Grey Matters
Grey is a key colour in modern home décor.
Grey Matters. In all the homes I have worked in over the years, greyed tones have always been the most popular. Whether it’s brown, gold or red – adding a hint of grey not only tones the colour down, it also makes it warmer at the same time.
Many people think of grey as a cool colour. And it can be, depending on the grey chosen. However, all the beautiful warm taupes we see being used everywhere are versions of ‘warm greys’.
We will continue to see warm greys being used throughout interior (and exterior) spaces. Colour pallets derived from nature’ wonders are the inspiration behind this colour way.
Tonal variations of driftwood and pebbles combined with whites and cream create a calming environment. Warm greys used on walls with contrasting warm white on ceilings, doors and trim create a neutral backdrop to get creative with furnishings and accessories. Accent with splashes of stormy blues and greyed greens, you have a relaxed, welcoming colour pallet that is timeless.
Think of the interior of your home much as you would your wardrobe. Like a basic black, grey or white  suit, you can add colourful accessories or textural elements to elevate the style. Bring in colour with toss cushions, candles, flowers and art pieces. Add texture through fabrics, carpets, wallpaper and blankets.
Use your walls, main architectural features and major furniture investments as the backbone to your space. Keep these neutral where possible. You can add drama by creating a feature wall - painted in a favourite colour, dressed in dramatic wallpaper or a specialty wall finish for a real ‘wow’ factor.
Your home is your greatest investment. It is where you rest, play and entertain. It is also where you surround yourself with those you love. Choose colours that bring you peace and joy to create an environment you want to come home to.

Your Guide to a Successful Home Improvement Project
Have you ever tried to sketch something from memory, only to find that it looks nothing like you had imagined it, or had a great idea and found once implemented wasn’t such a great idea after all?
Turning your house into a dream home is a lot like that, especially if you don’t have experience with interior design or construction.
Whether you are looking for a major change or just something to tweak your space, identifying what works best for you can be challenging. Once you start thinking about all the unknowns and take a look at what you are working with, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
However, with an expert at the helm you can achieve harmony and functionality in your home. The first step in any successful home remodelling or renovation project is getting expert advice.
When you take the step of consulting with an Interior Designer, you are working with a professional who can guide you through the process and come up with ideas and solutions to make the most of your space. They help you maneuver through the obstacles of space planning, storage challenges, lighting inadequacies, visual harmony, material functionality, and a variety of other technical aspects that might not seem obvious.
Your Interior Designer helps you make the most of your space to ensure you enjoy your home for many years to come. This is why a consultation is vital before you begin any design, renovation or home improvement project.
Consultations will set up a focused vision, give you exciting new ideas, and save you both time and money. Here is a guide to prepare you for your Design Consultation for a successful home improvement project.
1. Determine your goals. What areas of your home to you want to address and why? Is this your forever home where you want to invest for the future, or are you getting ready to sell? If you are planning on doing your project in stages, the decisions you make now will affect future work down the road.  The Designer can help you plan your project so it evolves smoothly.
2. Be honest (and realistic) about the budget. You may not be able to have everything on your wish list right away. Having a figure in mind for the project will help the Designer determine the scope of work and create a plan to make the most of your budget.
3. Think about how you use the space. Take a close look around and be objective about what you are working with. What are the challenges you face now and what do you need to make it more functional?
4. Gather images of rooms you like. It helps to provide the Designer with images of rooms you like so they can see what style(s) you gravitate to. Clip out pictures from magazines, visit Houzz, Pinterest, and other sites online to gather inspiration. Make notes about what exactly you like about each image.
5. Determine what existing furniture pieces you want to keep and what you can let go of.   Maybe now is the time for a fresh start. Look at everything you currently have and ask yourself if it actually fits with your vision. Often times we hang onto items only because they fill a space. If it is something you truly cherish and must keep, the Designer can suggest the best way to incorporate it into the new scheme.
6. Have an open mind. The Designer will come up with ideas you never thought (or heard) of. That is why you hired them! Some things may seem challenging, but they might just be the boost you need to come up with something you didn’t consider before. Keep your mind open for new opportunities and alternate ways to approach things.
7. Eliminate distractions. The consultation is the first step to realizing your home’s full potential. Schedule the consultation when you and the Designer can discuss your plans without the distraction of children, pets, and ringing telephones. This is especially true for people who need calm and silence to concentrate. You want to set up the meeting to be a success, to make the most of your time with the Designer.
Ideas are exciting, options are endless.
