As the woman sat up and Dug climbed off of her Carl immediately recognized her. It was Ellie. Of course it was Ellie, Dug didn’t just run off like that after anyone, and he certainly wouldn’t tackle a random stranger from halfway across the park.
He tightened his jaw and steeled his heart. He wouldn’t let her in, not again. Not after what had happened, not after she had just left. He felt a twinge of feeling as she pushed his hand out of the way but he quickly swallowed that back down.
Carl watched carefully as she extended her hand to Dug and wanted to smack her hand away. Dug was Carl’s now. Sure they had gotten him together, but it had been he who was left with the care of him after she had run off abroad. She hadn’t just left Carl, she had left Dug too. Thought the golden retriever clearly seemed to forget that that was the case as he nuzzled her hand.
“Traitor.” Carl whispered at the dog jokingly. He cleared his throat, figuring he would have to be the first one to speak if they were ever to have any sort of civil conversation. “Well, interesting to see you here Ellie. What brings you to little old Swynlake?”
Sorry About That... || Earlie
Ellie had just gotten off the flight that day the flight taking her away from her beloved adventure. She wasn’t sure why or what made her go back to Swynlake maybe it was the lore or the whispers of the magic that inhabited the town.
She was looking at her notebook one moment and the next she was on the ground her cheek throbbing. It took her a moment for her mind to catch up with her body. And it took another moment for her mind to register that only one dog had ever done that before. She didn’t even let her mind reply the memory, to get her hopes up. But the paws, they looked so familiar.
She sat up her gaze on her lap making sure everything was working and then her world seemed to go into slow motion. That voice.
The voice. The only voice to ever make her weak to her knees. Her breath hitched in her throat. Why, why was he here? Did he know she was going to be here?
She knew he was offering his hand but Ellie couldn’t take it, because if she did all the walls and drive she had worked so hard for would all come crashing down. How to get out of this?
First she pushed his hand away keeping her eyes on the ground as she stood up wiping off her jeans. With her eyes down she knew it really was them. She reached out to her dog, letting him sniff her. “Hi baby,” she whispered, smiling when he nuzzled into her palm, just like he used to.

Sorry About That... || Earlie
Carl was taking Dug for a walk like he did every morning before he went back to his flat and stayed holed up for the entire day doing research that he would never show to anyone and that would never get published. That had basically become his routine since he had ended up in Swynlake a little while back. Sure he had made a few friends but he hadn’t really made any sort of real connection. He couldn’t bring himself to do that, not again. So he walked Dug and talked to Dug and sometimes he could swear Dug talked back, but that had to just be in his mind right?
Carl took Dug on a nice long walk that particular morning, completely intent on getting his ridiculous golden retriever to just relax by the time they got back to the flat so Carl could have some uninterrupted time to his thoughts. It was all for naught though because fate would have it that Dug would not be settling down that day. In fact, just as their walk was drawing to a close, Dug slipped his collar and bolted. Carl chased after him as per usual when Dug was being a moron, but he could not catch up before Dug leaped onto an innocent bystander and tackled her to the ground. Carl ran over and grabbed Dug by the scruff of his neck. Carl had to wrestle with him a bit to get the collar back on him, but he eventually did and then he held out his hand to the stranger to help them up. “Sorry about that, Dug is an idiot with no manners and a tendency for violent hugs.”

“No…oh, all right!”
Full Name: Carl Fredriksen Face Claim: Ben McKenzie Pronouns: He/him Age:  27 Sexuality: Straight Current Status: Taken
Character Information
It could be said that Carl Fredriksen’s story didn’t really start until he got to uni. Sure he had a childhood, sure he had a family, but what was interesting about the second child of your standard suburban family? That’s exactly right. Nothing. Carl was just another face in the crowd, a man destined for pretty much the same old same old: cubical desk job, skinny tie, and meaningless talk around the water cooler. But a fire ignited the kindling of something much much bigger for him the day he set foot on his University campus.
Fate would have it that Carl really couldn’t afford to go to uni until he was 21, which was when the average student graduated. But it was no problem for Carl, he just wanted to learn about history and archaeology and zoology. Though he was older than most of the older students, he didn’t attract many friends. That was an effect that being perfectly ordinary had on a person’s relationships. He kept his head down, and he kept to himself pretty much all of the time.
Well… He did until Ellie. What could be said about Ellie? She was Carl’s polar opposite, and we all know what they say about opposites. Carl fell hard and fast for the loud outgoing girl in his entry level history class who always made sure the prof knew when they made a mistake. They ended up having many classes together the spring semester of that first year and they sat next to each other in all of them. Ellie wasn’t just someone who Carl met because of the spark that would thrust him to something more, she was the spark. Carl talked more, laughed more, and cared less.
Carl found as their schooling progressed that he was desperately in love with his best friend Ellie and he could tell she was in love with him as well. All he wanted was to graduate, and settle down, have 2.5 kids and that white picket fence life that he had grown up in, because even though he had grown out of his boring past, he thought that was all that could be his future.  Ellie had her plans though, and they were not the dream he had. Ellie wanted to travel the world, to put her degree to use, to be an anthropologist, not just study anthropology.
Carl couldn’t go with her. He couldn’t bring himself to do that. How could he? All he had ever known was that home was in one place. But Ellie left anyway. She went after her dream. And Carl quickly learned that home is not a place, home is a person, and Ellie was his home and she was gone. He knew Swynlake was on her list of places she wanted to go, because of the high concentration of Magicks, so he moved there, hoping, just hoping, that maybe he would run into her again.
