im wondering if elden ring has references and inspirations to annihilation/southern reach series
annihilation mentions a crab with a human face on it, the face of one of the past expedition members. meanwhile the crabs in elden ring above godwyns corpse are mutating to have his face on their backs
Tumblr media
godwyn himself feels like hes inspired by the crawler to me. underground, infecting the entire rest of the land, passively and clear without reason, maybe instinctevly? but also he seems to be a horrific mix of biology. between clams, fish, man, flies, and treeroots, hes become this mash of concepts. just touching him could implant death in you
Tumblr media
the mimic tears themselves feel like a very direct concept. annihilation has several instances of people being copied
the erdtree itself too seems to follow the same idea of annihilation. in annihilation, a meteor crashes on earth and whats in the meteor begins to warp and change the world around its range growing more and more, everything under its gaze is not immune to it
its heavily implied that the erdtree itself crashed into the lands between, and from this, it began to take over (with the help of marika). the greater will wants nothing more than to expand its control over the land and bend those to its will.
thematically too, the erdtree is kind of like a lighthouse, right? visible from all of the lands between shining its light, it serves as a reminder and as a reference point to its inhabitants

Weird thing enjoyer found another weird thing to enjoy
Various Frankenstein doodlings. Abt half were from reference half from imagination.
Most of these are related to the Royal Ballet version which I watched a video of the other day. So good and such a wild combination. The elegant medium and the grotesque subject matter.
I also had to draw that amazing puppet version that was made for the Hamburg state opera. lil cutie he is

I'm like if a chivalrous knight kissed a fair maiden's hand and said "my lady, I fight for you" and then walked off and immediately tripped over his own armor and fell on the ground

level 1 fantasy author: what if you could fuck your clone lol?
miyazaki and grrm: your clone ceases to be an exact copy of you a second after it enters existence. the subjective nature of consciousness means that a different experience of reality is created. a unique history inevitably results in a different person with their own memory and desires. you and your clone would immediately be separated by the vast, lonely distances of individual consciousness. and even if you were to merge again, you would not find the comfort of yourself but the horror of being known by another. holding your hammer before the ring of life, the same strike would express contradictory yearnings for rebirth and stagnation
also miyazaki and grrm: just to be clear, in this scenario you're still fucking your clone, you're both getting divorces to do it, you're making clone babies, you're making your clone bark like a dog,

Miyazaki has stated about the name of the DLC that "there is also another hidden meaning to the title, but this is something for the players to find"
What is an eclipse but a shadow cast upon the sun.
Calling it now but the final boss of the DLC is gonna be Godwyn

ok putting this behind a readmore because I got out of hand in explaining this:
I think what people overlook is how Griffith was... not the worst person alive from the start of Berserk? Sure it was suspicious the way he was so possessive of Guts, his unbridled ambition raising some red flags, but the events of the eclipse were a direct result of him becoming broken beyond recognition and not coping well with that. He was this perfect, beautiful prince who was full of promise, and that was tragically taken from him.
This is where I thought Miquella would be going, if they decided to go that route. But since the trailer's made it clear that he checked out of his body well before mohg got a hold of it, there's no point for him to snap. He still has, as far as we know, total agency over himself and his choices.
Meanwhile, Godwyn is literally a family tragedy still rotting in the proverbial basement. Everyone adored him, even when it wasn't compelled (something Griffith didn't even have supernatural control over, might I add!). He had tremendous political influence, if making peace between Leyndell and the dragons is anything to go by.
And now he is a shell of his former self, and while there are Those Who Live In Death and Miquella attempting to bring him back... there is no way he's gonna come back the same, if he does. The game already refers to him as the "former" body of Godwyn. Not unlike how Griffith is reborn as Femto after his trauma.
Tumblr media
People point fingers at Miq for Castle Sol, but that's only because he is mentioned by name as an accomplice to the event. The eclipse is an event for Godwyn's return -- and I for one am terrified of the way the shotel refers to the eclipse's power as his.
Tumblr media
and in addition to that, there is also the way that Fia describes the creation of her mending rune. In the game, runes can be gestated, discovered, or abandoned entirely. But again and again Fia explicitly describes the creation of her rune as something like the birth of a child - one that her, Godwyn, and you have inheritance to.
Tumblr media
Now this point is wayyy more of a stretch than the others I've stated, but take a guess who else ends up having a child that inherited the traits of three parents.
Tumblr media
all of this is to say: while of course miyazaki is perfectly capable of creating original characters and concepts that are more than just references to existing material, if Griffith is at all in the discussion of this game, we're looking at the wrong fair-haired charismatic demigod in my opinion. Also, uh, I am terrified of Godwyn and the upcoming DLC. thanks for reading <3
