blurry christmas lights AND dancing dust, can it really get any better than this?
i left this footage pretty much unedited (minus the parts of my kids bumping into the camera that i decided to take out). christmas lights are one of my favorite things, blurry ones are even better, and this dust is just magical. it kinda reminds me of snow, which we sadly don’t get much of here in mississippi. i hope this inspires someone to make something wintery and beautiful 🙂
i just added the background music out of boredom. it’s called “flurry” and it was my first RECord i ever posted at HitRECord almost a year ago, i can’t believe it’s been that long already!
**disclaimer: i mayyy have shaken an old blanket in front of the camera to get extra dusts in a few shots. just didn’t want anyone thinking my house is always this dusty. i have way too many dusty video RECords (dusty dance, dusty piano) – maybe it’s a sign that i should clean my house.

Paper Cranes + Tealily Christmas Party 2014

Every year we have our Christmas celebration at our little nesty studio where we invite another beloved studio to share a good time with. This year we invited Joel and Trish from Tealily Photography whom we love so dearly. They are awesome in what they do and we have known them for so many years for shooting together.
Every year, as a competitive bunch and kid at heart, we have our little charade/pictionary competition that are always filled with so much fun and laughter. This year is no exception.
This year we also have a little sharing session, where we shared how we have grown and what we can do better. Trish happened to share two bible verses that she held on dearly in her heart, allow me to share one of them that is very fitting as we embark on a new journey in 2015…

Megan Duffy is a Los Angeles based actress who has appeared in over 50 national commercials, guest starring roles in television shows including Mad Men, Criminal Minds, and Torchwood: Miracle Day, and has a leading role opposite Elijah Wood in the feature film “Maniac” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. She is a lead cast member of Blumhouse’s role playing podcast “Fear Initiative” and can be next seen in the Christmas horror anthology “All the Creatures Were Stirring” directed by David and Rebekah McKendry which will premiere in December 2018. She recently made her directorial debut with a music video for the LA based electronic dance duo Smoke Season, and makes a terrific homemade beef jerky.

FALKLAND ISLANDS – Penguins Tea and Scones

Grey skies, chilly winds and whitecaps greet our arrival off Port Stanley in the early morning. “Dress like an onion” we’ve been told and I have to go search for my base layer, thermals, fleeces, waterproof and scarf. And I can’t find them (at first).
First time on the ship’s tender and it’s not as bad as I feared. Then a short bus ride to meet Charlie, a fourth generation Falkland Islander with his sturdy 4WD. God, he surely needs it with the off-road driving over soft, rutted and furrowed peat bog to get to the Bluff Cove Farm at the sea to see the penguins.
We climb out to be greeted by more locals, Joan and Emma, and a colony of hundreds of Gentoo penguins. Across the way on the grassy hill is a lone King Penguin. What to photograph first? Down by the beach there are even more, as well as the Upland geese.
The whole experience reminds me a little of when I went in a motorboat to Handa island off the west coast of Scotland in 1998 with David Brentin. After a beach landing and walking for six kms in drizzle we lay quietly on the wet ground to see little Disneyesque, orange beaked and orange footed puffins nesting.
After having our ‘fill’ of the cute little penguins here, we take up the invitation of the locals to walk across the grassy hill towards the sea and the Sea Cabbage Café. An amazing array of home-made cakes and eats with cups of tea or hot chocolate are laid out on plates and served by old ladies with serious faces in aprons.
Charlie’s waiting to take us back to the wharf. He’s a lovely piece of work, “not very good with the readin’ and writin’, or computer stuff, but I know my animals’, he says pointing out the ‘Belted Galloway’, cattle from the Hebrides in Scotland chewing on the grass. It’s Christmas Day tomorrow. He tells us he’s killed the 3 month-old lamb and they’ll bake it and serve up with mint sauce, and the first of the new potato crop and carrots.
The wind has dropped. I hope Charlie’s wife was wrong when she told us that they’re expecting a Force 9 gale tonight and she’s glad she’s not on our boat!

Interview at the Dallas Zoo with the Canon C100

Over the Christmas holiday traveled with a local TV crew down to Dallas, TX to produce a 60 minute on-location show for their daily lifestyle show. Over two days we visited 8 locations, conducting interviews at each location. There were two shooters (including me) and two talent. We split our locations and did two shoots per day. The shoots were all run and gun with majority of the lighting being available.
This segment was the most interesting to me and my first attempt with the C100. I received the C100 on Christmas Eve and toyed around with it for a couple of hours. Then two days later shot this segment. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the camera. Fitting into the TV stations mold, I shot everything in 60i and used the Wide DR feature. Everything in this segment was shot handheld with a Red Rock Micro Shoulder rig, Small HD DP6 monitor and Letus’ FF unit. I used the Canon 24-70mm lens (version 1) for the entire shoot as I could only bring what I could carry on the shoot. The footage was recorded straight to SD cards and I used the double slot recording, just to insure that I had a backup of the footage. In post (PP CS6), I warped stabilized 95% of the b-roll shots, CC and graded the shots using a blend of Film Convert and Magic Bullet. Overall, I was happy with the warp stabilizer in CS6 as it saved majority of my shots from appearing overly handheld. The close up of the giraffe shows a bit of a wabble because of the warp stabilizer. A miss on my part before exporting out to the master version. Every non-technical person I spoke with thought it was just because I was hand held and didn’t seem to matter to them. This was a quick turn in that all four packages had to be produced in 2 days to make time slot. Editing was made simpler with the use of CS6 since it handled the AVCHD codec rather well.
We were in and out of the zoo under 2 hours. It was a cold and wet day, so there were no visitors and majority of the animals were hiding or inside, because of the weather. The final product went to air in 720p, 29.97. I exported using Media Encoder and changed the interlace feature to progressive to avoid any interlacing issues on the 59.94 to 29.97 conversion. This version is a reflection of that setting.
Overall, I am happy with the C100. Just need more time with it, so it can become second nature. I’m coming from using the 5DM2 for the last year. This wasn’t the most ideal situation for how I’d like to produce, but if the shoe fits, wear it, right? The TV station ran it’s own graphics, etc on playback through their control room.
