If there's one piece of advice I can give to fic writers who feel discouraged by the "content creation" culture and lack of community engagement in modern fandom, it's to try writing for an audience of one.
And I don't mean write for yourself!
Find one weirdo friend that enjoys sharing ideas with you, and write fanfiction for them. Get to know their taste, and tailor your writing to it. One person who will message you while reading your stuff and want to discuss it deeply and dig into and challenge your ideas - they will give you more creative satisfaction than a hundred vague, vacant comments of praise.
Maybe some other folks will end up reading and enjoying your work! If they do, they will probably have more in-depth things to say, too, because you'll be writing deeply on a specific set of concepts, not creating broadly palatable, derivative, marketable drivel meant to appeal to a large audience.
And if no one else reads it, you'll still have that one weird friend.

Peter knows he's a pretentious asshole. It's an immutable aspect of his personality, and he's beyond acceptance of it.
In fact, it's his favorite quality about himself; a point of pride that in every scenario, he knows with certainty that he's the smartest, most capable, most stylish person present. And if his bare minimum is the most people's best effort, why would he be anything other than a pretentious asshole? He, of anyone, deserves it.
The one drawback – one that he only admits to himself – is the distance that it creates between himself and others.
Not people in general. He couldn't care less about any given person off the street, and if half the town died one night, his main concern would be avoiding the same fate.
No, it's the distance the pack keeps that bothers him. It's not physical distance, either – 30 members living together under the same roof does not beget privacy – but an emotional gap that he doesn't think will ever be bridged.
Not that he faults them, necessarily. He's difficult to get along with on a good day, and add in his dubious morals and position as Left Hand, it would be more surprising if he were a favored member of the pack.
If he were to be completely honest, he'd say he's not even interested in his packmates as individuals. Sure, they're family, and he'll always be loyal; he'd even go so far as to say he loves them.
But he just doesn't – fit in with them, as juvenile as it sounds.
There's no one in the pack whom he can look at and say Ah, yes, this one knows me. And sometimes it feels like he's standing chest-deep in the ocean, letting waves crash over his head and swallowing briny water while the others laugh and play on the beach. There's an emptiness in his chest, and for all that he ignores it, it continues to grow.
One day he fears it'll consume him whole.
He wonders if he'd mind it.
