weird but i guess ultimately predictable that people keep using the sexy fallout ghoul as evidence that people (mainly women) will lust after men "regardless of appearance" when actually mainly what that proves is that looking hot is so much more complex than society (advertising) would lead you to believe

It's not that women automatically see past the physical, it's just that you don't necessarily need to have a nose to be physically attractive

People tend to throw out the phrase "extremely specific kinks" as though that inherently implies something transgressive, but in my experience, the overwhelming majority of extremely specific kinks are so innocuous that you could see them in public and not even clock them. I've been using Tom's fennel for years, but am now trying to find one with fluoride in it, and finding a toothpaste that is no mint and yes fluoride should not be such a huge and infuriating quest. still got some more grocery stores to search, but not even the children's toothpaste in the nearest one had any that were suitable.

When kids are trying to explain a problem they are having to you, you need to ask questions. Kids often don't have the words that they need to explain what is going on. So, they substitute in words that they do know that are as close as possible. If you take what they say at face value, you can sometimes entirely miss the actual problem.

A recent example is a kid, ten years old, I know who kept saying that their problem is that they "get bored" when reading. I've been helping by recommending books and other material relevant to their interests to their parents, but it didn't seem to work. So, I came over, sat down with the kid, and asked them to read as much of a short story as they could before they got bored.

They could read about sixty or so words before they were unable to focus on the text any longer.

According to them, this has been a problem since they were seven. But because "boredom" was the only word they had for it, they received attempts to get them more engaging texts. That's a great strategy for most book-shy kids, but not when it's looking far more like an undiagnosed disability. This kid has amazingly supportive parents who are now looking to get them more expertly evaluated, but because they didn't have the language to explain how bad the problem was, it flew under the radar for three years.

Ask kids clarifying questions when they're having trouble, especially when the problem you think they are telling you about isn't being solved by solutions that would normally work. You might figure out why those solutions aren't working.

I myself have made it a point in recent years not to share any content that glibly uses the phrase, "not your grandma's " because it's a) lazy and b) dismisses the real fact that grandmothers and older textile artists have worked hard to keep craft traditions alive and evolving, not to mention their immense skills. "oh nooo, is it oppression to tell kids when to go to bed now?" yeah actually. like. very straightforwardly. if i can't get up in the middle of the night to make a frozen burrito without being punished, i'm being subjugated. why was this supposedly different when i was 13? because i didn't know how to make good choices about my sleep hygiene yet? how was i supposed to learn if the only thing ever done was enforce a bedtime for me? how was i supposed to feel out what feels good and healthy for my body if the entire structure i existed in was about imposing someone else's desires on my body and ignoring any negative effects for the sake of following the rules?

treating "bedtime abolition" like something silly and frivolous is putting a lot of faith in the idea that parents unilaterally understand what's going on in their children's minds and bodies and always act with the utmost respect and care for their internal experiences. this idea really does not pan out in reality. like. at all. yes, even among leftist parents.
