This might be nothing or it might be the start of a great fun project
Full spoilers for everything Gloomhaven (including locked classes and upcoming Frosthaven content) and everything ATLA. Less so LoK as I don’t care much about it.
Today I have stumbled upon the idea of how fun reskinning the Gloomhaven game for the ATLA world would be. I was surprised noone had thought of it. So I decided to be the change that I want to see in the world.
Just think about it: - a sprawling world to move through, with various communication routes requiring different card decks - so instead of Road, City and Rift events you get Sailing, Flying and Journeying (is there a better way to convey “going on foot”?) events - the nations and their bending from ATLA map so nicely onto the mana from GH! -- this also makes it a great opportunity to create enemy characters from every Nation and to make it possible to sometimes side with them (just like in the Gloomhaven Battlements A and B scenarios) - separate classes for every character: -- Aang starting with having both his standard Airbender (air mana required for everything?) deck and an all-loss cards Avatar deck - somewhat like either a Quatryl Blink Blade or a Harrower Geminate (FH classes) and then moving on to get new elemental cards and changing the standard deck part into a mana-juggling character - like the Savvas Elementalist -- Sokka as a cross betweeen a Quatryl Tinkerer/Quatryl Demolitionist with maybe some sprinkling of Inox Brute in-between? -- Suki as Human Bannerspear - this is the one I had the least trouble with. -- Zuko as Aesther Nightshroud - only using Fire instead of Dark mana, maybe with some of that sweet hand to hand Valrath Red Guard abilities? -- Toph as Savvas Cragheart with a stronger emphasis on the use of Earth mana. On a higher level she would get metalbending abilities (no idea how to make it fit with the standard GH elements) -- and I honestly have no idea where to place Katara’s starting deck. Yes, I know it should be using Ice (so in here “Water” mana) but I just have no idea what style would be good for her - certainly not the Vermling Mindthief. Maybe Aesther Doomstalker would be a good fit for here? Later I see her as a kind of Aesther Voidwarden - especially the cards which force the enemies to attack each other seem like a perfect opportunity to present bloodbending.
By now I can easily see that summons wouldn’t fit in well with this. None of the characters seem like the kind to own summons (discounting Appa, Momo and Druk of course). Maybe if there was some mechanic to turn enemy characters into allies and so unlock them for new players/after retirement (would it even make sense to have retirement there? Or is it better to make it like JoTL, a standalone campaign?), then Azula could have Mai and Ty Lee as her high level summons (kind of like the Shambling Skeleton of the Necromancer or whatever her name is now?).
Would I make anyone else into a character? Iroh? Hakoda? Pakku? Maybe. Other people? No idea. There’s a lot to be done. We will see whether I just abandon this after posting just this one thing or whether I decide to see it done (or whether I start and then my squirrel brain switches midway to a new special interest - I have no high hopes to be had about my ability to see something finished). Still, I wish very much that I will be able to do it. It seems fun.
