casting with different wands
handheld wands
Using magic with a wand is like breathing, like drawing in air then letting it out a second later. It comes naturally. Tracing the magical symbols in the air is like impressing upon the atmosphere your will, and it agrees to follow your call. Traditionally they are made of wood, and often certain types of wood resonate with certain types of wizards. Wands are popular with younger and novice magic users because of their ease and agreeability
staffs
Staffs are connected to the environment, even more so than wands. As a longer instrument of power, they are able to withstand the call of a greater force of magic. Instead of tracing magical symbols in the air, one calls upon the natural source by gesturing with the staff, envisioning the symbols of magic in their minds. Different types of magic may require different gestures, requiring more than the movement of just a wrist. The staff is an instrument of magic, versatile in use but harder to master. Still, similar to wands, they call upon the magic in the atmosphere to impress upon it the caster’s will, and the magic agrees to follow your call. Staffs are popular among students with a more complex understanding of their magic, ones that require less focus on the technicalities of their spells.
swords
Swords focus magic into the user, sharp like the physical blade. Using a sword as an instrument of magic requires precision and an intense mastery only achieved by hours upon hours of practice and dedication. The sword is an extension of your body and an extension of your magic, extending your will upon the physical plane in a way only you are capable of directing. Swords are double-edged, and must be used carefully, lest the user be harmed by their own magic or their blade. Swords are popular amongst those who practice their magic with discipline, and those who have impeccable control over their wants and desires, and therefore have control over their magic.
bows
Bows, similar to swords, are precise and diverse, though perhaps less powerful. The bow is characterized by the precision and focus required to wield a sword, yet using a bow feels as natural as using a wand due to its composition of wood and its connection to the surrounding atmosphere. Channeling magic through a bow requires the mental envisioning of arcane symbols, the spell then executed by the arrow shot through the symbols. The bow is a difficult weapon to master as it requires a complete understanding of how to combine the arcane and physical aspects of magic. They require intense focus and a clear image of what the caster wants to be carried out. Bows are popular amongst those who prefer a balanced approach to their magic, a jack of all trades of sorts, and also those who are decisive in their dreams.
“arcane focuses” (wands that aren’t a typical weapon, such as the lamp, flute, eyeglass, relics, etc.)
Arcane focuses encompass all unorthodox instruments of magic. They are tailored to the user’s tastes, habits, and magic, and they generally embody something of value to the caster. They require emotional attachment to use, and often wizards find themselves channeling specific emotions to cast different spells. Similar to a wand or staff, arcane focuses draw from the natural magic surrounding them, and they are able to draw in the magic and shape it to the wizard’s intended spells. Arcane focuses require casters to be in tune with their emotions and require an acute awareness of their relationship to other beings in the world. Arcane focuses are popular with those who have mastered the textbook magic styles and have a desire to continue expermenting.

Sort of follows THIS DRAWING of Grandmother Raven. Same plot/story from that drawing.
AU/Headcanon talk below
But like in my story with my wizard (Death/Liam specifically) I just imagine Grandmother Raven being this creature the wizard eventually learns to be more wary of?
Not scared - like Grandmother Raven isn't the evil one in it. But it is an uneasy feeling that at any time she shows up, it is better to stay up on your guard. Do not turn your back to or fully trust.
She will still advise and talk to the wizard. However, all judgement and interpretation of the words themselves would be left to the wizard rather than mindlessly follow along.
