to say naomi was tired was an understatement at this point. she can’t even remember if she’d felt this bad during that part of her tenure in the opa. glass comes to her lips, crisp and cold. images of eros keep replaying in her head over and over again, in such rapid succession that it’s a little difficult holding the conversation with amos. another hand reaches out, gently anchoring down to the back of his neck as if her thoughts wouid whisk her away. nails scratch in a slow, circular pattern while naomi gathers her thoughts.
“ i didn’t want to believe fred johnson was a good person, “ the engineer finally whispers. “ or, maybe i couldn’t. can’t really think of the distinction right now. “ what she did know is that based on hew few conversations with camina, naomi was extremely impressed by what tycho offered.
turning her head, she looks all around her. bodies gyrated. smiles stretched across a number of faces. some of them were fake, they had to be. still, as her mind drifted back to camina she also thought about all the perks given for working on the station. she thought about the recreational aspects, clean streets, and overall feel of the station. how much different would her life have been had she grown up in this kind of environment? what if this was the effort and care put into every belter home?
“ makes me feel a little better about docking here. still not sure how i feel about being sent out like a hunting dog, though. “

to expand: naomi steps onto the canterbury to hide. she’s trying to run from what happened in the opa. she’s trying to run from the fact that she was manipulated into silence and her child was a tool in that.
because this was all attached to the opa i think, at least subconsciously, naomi tried to erase anything “ belter “ from her, well, life. she acted like everyone else on the cant. she stayed away from everyone else. there was no connection to her heritage or what made her feel so strongly about joining the alliance to begin with.
then they find tycho.
and she finds drummer.
now you see naomi opening up. she’s blossoming like a flower under the sun. she indulges in more tattoos and spends time around more belters. on top of that? she looks fucking HAPPY. it’s like she’s found a piece of herself again and it’s all because drummer took the time and effort to gently nudge naomi from this ten ton wall she’d created around herself in the five years since she first started running.

at first, naomi just smiles. the hand holding her drink curls up to press the lip to her cheek. out of though, mostly. as they sit in a corner, tucked away from the gyrating and loud music of the dance floor her eyes are taking in as much information as possible. yet, the engineer also finds herself deep in thought.
she’d heard of king arthur from camelot. both versions, actually. the first being an old earther tale from way too many millennia ago. the other, about a shift in power gone wrong. oddly enough, their stories aligned more than she’d found comfortable but naomi never said as much out loud. didn’t take a genius to guess he got the joke one too many times. people thinking they were clever or the first to make such a link. in fact, she was pretty sure miller muttered it under his breath when they all collided into each other a few days prior.
“ because there are other precious things, “ naomi takes a light sip, eyes still firmly fixated on the dance floor in the hopes of finding a glimpse of amos. “ and in the belt we make our own light. “ in more ways than one. she wondered how an earther could understand. it wasn’t her right to assume dottie wouldn’t. only that some concepts were inherently harder for the other side to grasp.
the conversation also walked more along a metaphorical line. after all, they were drowning in man-made light. fluorescents advertising everything up and down the tycho’s hallways. her statement still stood, though. as long as there were colonists on the belt there were belters who looked deep within for an inner light. it was that light that kept them going, kept them hoping, and kept them fighting. if they didn’t have it then they would’ve been stomped out a long time ago. either the weight of earth would’ve crushed them or the weight of mars would’ve snuffed them out.

growing up in the belt and being in the opa meant following her gut. naomi relied on her own instincts to survive. but, then she couldn’t. then someone started holding something over her head and she had no idea what was up or down. after so long of holding those instincts back by the time she landed on the canterbury she didn’t know herself anymore. all naomi knew what was eating away at her and i think, in a lot of ways, giving in to the instinct that she trusted amos was the spark she needed to become herself again. amos helped her navigate back to the confident young rebel she used to be.
