How to answer "How much is your expected salary?" during an interview
When you apply for a call center job your interviewer would normally ask you the question “What is your expected salary?” This kind of question is tricky one because the question itself is awkward. Your future employer is asking you how much do you expect to get paid. If you just answer the question without understanding the reasoning behind it you will end up giving an outrageous number to your interviewer which would definitely have a negative effect to your chances of getting hired. To answer this difficult question, we should first find out what is the reason your future employer is asking this.
What do you need to answer?
A salary is the payment made to an employee by an employer for the work done but is paid most commonly on a bimonthly basis (every two weeks). Employees are paid differently based on many factors including experience, skills, etc. Salary would normally include non-monetary compensation like paid vacations, HMO, and other incentives depending on the Company.
So when you get asked, “What is your expected salary?” It refers to the amount of money you are expecting to earn as an employee working for the company you are applying for. it is important to discuss this during your job application because this will help the company figure out if they should pursue you as a potential employee or not.

First of all, before you were asked that question, I must tell you that the company already has a salary range for you, most of the time it is a trick to get you to pick a lower range so that they can bargain on your potential salary with the company. Your job as the applicant is to research the call center company you are applying for and find out what is their salary range for the call center job you are applying for. This will help you negotiate with them to get the best possible salary offer without asking the company for an unreasonable salary figure. This will ensure that you and the company will come to terms when it comes to compensation and this should help you land your call center job with the company.

The reason the company asks this question is that the employer will want to know if their designated salary budget for the position matches their expected salary. When answering this question, do not show that you feel awkward talking about it. Instead, show them that you are confident. Also, don’t give an amount that is too low, just to be accepted. You may regret it if you are presented with a very low salary offer. On the flip side, don’t give out a number that is too outrageous as employers may be discouraged from hiring you if your expected salary is out of their budget. Look for the appropriate pay range based on your level of experience, location, industry, and position.

The best way to answer “What is your expected salary package?” is to give an amount that is in line with your expected salary.
Set it a little higher than the bare minimum you anticipate getting. Mention that you want to be paid more than you were getting with your previous employer. Additionally, let them know that based on their benefits package, you are willing to negotiate the salary package. Don’t forget to mention that your expected salary is based on your research and knowledge about the usual salary for your position and level.

Ways to Improve Your English-Speaking Skills

Speaking is one of the four harder language skills. Talking to a native speaker is different from hearing and comprehending, or even reading and writing. Also, if you’re working in a BPO company, speaking English is a must. Worried that you can’t? Don’t be, because, with the right tricks, you can improve your English-speaking abilities in no time.
1: Improving your English at home.

Read aloud. Ideally, every day for at least 15 or 20 minutes. You’ll get used to speaking for longer periods of time and forming long sentences won’t bother you anymore. And you’ll come across words that you can use to expand your vocabulary. It’s best to choose books with lots of dialogue. Since dialogue is a conversation, the language tends to be a little more casual and realistic. You know, reading poetry is nice, but conversing with people is a far more useful habit.
Also, listening to mp3s, podcasts, and news can make you improve your English at home. Scientific American, CBC, BBC, and Australia’s ABC Radio are great mp3s to get started with. Listen to music, too. It is not as good as listening to spoken news/podcasts/etc., but it is good. It would be best if you could focus on one song per day or such. Just make sure you actively try to understand it. Look up the lyrics online and sing along.
Watch TV and movies as well. Watching English TV and movies is the simplest method to participate in a conversation without actually engaging in one. Movies are great, because you can watch them repeatedly and learn new things each time. TV is good though, too, because you develop relationships with the characters, and you grow accustomed to how they talk and the quirks of the speech.
And lastly, take a record of you reading from a book. You will be able to truly hear yourself and be able to pinpoint the quirks in your English as well as any areas where you slow down and have trouble. Then re-record it and see how you’ve improved.
2: Improving your English with others.

Create reasons to speak English. You have to take control of your life and force English into it if you want to improve your speaking beyond just a mediocre level. Not just at home or at work, you must allow it to infiltrate every aspect of your life. All of them.
3: Training your brain.

Try to learn new words each day. Choose a few terms to write down and make an attempt to use from the books, websites, and TV shows you read or watch. You will lose it if you don’t use it.
Don’t overthink it, either. It’s quite simple to just have your body and mind locked up when you are around an English speaker, causing you to lose all memory of the words you know in the language.
If you manage to speak anything at all, you end up stuttering, which makes you feel awful and makes you swear never to speak English again.
Be patient. Above all else, you need to be patient. Learning a language is a process that can take years as well. If you get frustrated with yourself, you risk quitting. So don’t be hard on yourself. It will come. It will. Having an effective technique to monitor your progress is the simplest way to avoid becoming overly frustrated with everything.

Steps In Applying For A Call Center Job
There are many steps that you will face when you apply for a call center position. You will need to create an outstanding resume that recruiters can peruse and gauge if you are qualified. You will also go through several screening steps and interviews before you sign a contract.
Aside from the basic papers and documents and interviews that you have to prepare for, you also need to ready yourself both mentally and emotionally for your application process.
Make a Great Resume
When applying for any company, you need an excellent resume to impress different recruiters. You need to have a resume that looks both simple and powerful. It has to look professional. You can use one of those resume templates online like on “Canva” or download free templates.

If you cannot use a free template just remember to put the following on your resume in chronological order.
Contact details –You need to put your name, email address, cellphone number, address, and additional online contact information like the social media platforms you wish to be contacted on.
A photo –This is optional because you will be talking over the phone, but if you wish to add a picture, better use a professional-looking photo of yourself in a passport-size copy or a 2×2 printout.
3. Work Experiences–Add the jobs you have worked for to your resume. Start from the most recent one. Add some of your job details there like your work tasks and position. This is vital because your recruitment specialist needs to know which part or account he or she can match you.
4. Skills and Trainings–If you have attended seminars, you can add them to your resume. This is especially good for those who do not have much work experience. You can also add your soft skills such as computer literacy, typing speed, and the like.
5. Educational Background –Put your collegiate and high school details. If you have received any awards, add them as well.
Submit To Different Portals

Once you have your resume completed, the next step you need to do is to submit your resume to a job portal. Job portals can be an online marketplace for jobs such as Jobstreeet, Indeed, Monsterjobs, and many more. Online portals typically allow you to deposit your resume there. You also can look at the job market and send resumes through the portal to different employers.

As we’ve mentioned, job portals are online spaces to find employees and future employers. It’s an open space where people can find jobs and offer jobs. Basically, it works like an online depository of resumes and much like an online marketplace.
What’s great about job portals is that they have a wide selection of jobs that you can choose from. You have the freedom to submit your application to any company listed on their site.
However, the downside to job portals and marketplaces would be the fact that they will not put any effort into you to get hired. It’s up to you to send out your application and work on your job search.
b. Recruitment Firms
Another type of job portal or job assistance page would be the recruitment firms. Recruitment firms are normally companies are tasked to look for specific employees. Their task is to match the right applicant to the right company. So if you have the qualifications, you will be sure to find a job if you pass your resume to a recruitment firm.
Many people prefer to apply to a job market page instead of a recruiter. But to be clear about it, recruiters are better at finding you the job that you need. They both earn the same amount from the company if they find the applicant that the company is looking for. But in a recruitment firm, you are sure to find the best job match. They will also put a lot of energy into getting you hired.
Recruitment firms normally have a wide partnership with many companies so you will surely get the best employer for your career path.
c. Applying Directly
Of course you do have the option of applying directly. This application type would entail you to walk in to many different offices. This can be a bit taxing and difficult on your end. But if you feel that you will ace the interview with just one application to one company, then you can go for this route.
Of course companies also have their own websites where you can pass your resume, but if you wish to apply to several companies, you have to submit your application letter to each one. After that, you will also need to visit each company’s office.
Direct applications are better for tenured agents who already know what they want and are familiar with the application process. But if a tenured agent feels that he or she wants to shop around for better offers going through a recruitment firm or a job portal is better.
Go to your Interview
Now once you have submitted your resume, you will now be interviewed. The first interview is usually on the phone or online. It is essentially done to gauge your English speaking skills.
If you pass the initial phone interview, you will now go to the first face-to-face or online interview. This interview will be to gauge your personality and confidence. It also checks for your communication skills.

Your interviews will gauge your demeanor to know if you are hirable. It will check how well you can communicate. They will ask you questions that describe who you are and expresses your thoughts and opinions.
Aside from the initial interviews, you will also have a final interview. Here the operations manager can meet you and give his or her final say if you are to be hired or not.
Pass The Screening Process

After the first interview in the office, you will be given an exam. The exams normally take an hour or so. These exams are used to check your IQ and grammar. Most of the time the exams are about English proficiency and logical reasoning. If you pass this, you will not go to the English-speaking test. English-speaking tests are normally done over the phone in the call center office. It can be Versant or Berlitz.
Versant is done through an automated voice prompt versus Berlitz where an actual person gauges your speaking abilities in English. Versant is easier to pass than Berlitz. If the administrator of the Berlitz test cannot get your accent or pronunciation, you will fail automatically.

Sign The Contract
After you pass the screening process, you will be given a job offer. The job offer will contain all the pertinent information related to your new work. Read it carefully and don’t just sign without knowing what is on it.

Your JO will state the salary package the company will be paying you. It will state other benefits like your HMO package and other allowances.
If you feel you are happy with the contract, go ahead and sign it. Usually, the HR personnel can give you up to 24 hours to think about the offer should you feel uncertain about it.
Get Your Requirements

Once you have signed the contract and accepted the job offer, you can now start getting your documents ready. You may need to have the following.
NBI Clearance
Medical Examination –usually sponsored by the company
1×1 and 2×2 pictures
MDR for your your PhilHealth
Police clearance or barangay clearance –some companies don’t ask for this but just in case be ready.
TOR or Transcript of Records –You need to prepare this way before you apply as some schools take time to send you your records. Prepare For Day 1
Prepare For Day 1
So once you have all the requirements in place, you are now ready to work. On Day 1 at work, you can drop by HR to submit your documents. Be early so that you will know which area your training room will be in. Ask the guard at the reception to guide you.

13 Different Types of People You Will Meet In A Call Center

Call centers are fun, energetic, and dynamic workplaces. They are full of different types of people from different walks of life. There, you will meet young people who are just in their early twenties or even in their late teens, moms, dads, thirty-somethings, and even grandmas and grandpas. You’ll meet introverts, extroverts, ambiverts, and everything in between.
But of course, there are call center archetypes. These are the usual people you will find in a call center.
1. The Always Late

They are people who you have always seen sweaty and running in a panic daze. They probably have wet hair still dripping as they rush into the floor. Sometimes, they even text you to log them in or prep their station because they are now on the elevator hurrying to the floor.
The Always Late agent always has an excuse to his or her team lead about being late. Most of the time, they blame traffic jams and bad weather.
But the always late also has a friend, the Super Late. Super Late agents show up even if they are late for several hours. They don’t look haggard even if they are late. They just walk ever so slowly to their stations, munching on food as they sit down.
2. The Serious Type

The Serious Type of agents are those who are super focused at work. They care about the team and their metrics and getting money and commissions for their family. They also don’t drink after shift. If they do, it’s just to bond and improve their team standing.
During their shift, they don’t make chitchat with their seatmates. They typically have the perfect notes, follow QA guidelines and get good CSAT scores.
Your TL loves them. The bosses love them too.
3. The Noisy Ones

The noisy ones are those agents who are always laughing at something on the floor. They seem to be entertained by anything and everything. Noisy agents typically treat life on the floor as something fun. They joke around and make people laugh. Sometimes, they treat the bay as their little wet market.
They can play unusual games like dressing up and having fashion shows. They like making gossip and befriending anyone and everyone. Noisy agents usually are part of cliques with women, men, gay and lesbian members. They are practically the most colorful people you will find on the floor.
Most of the time, this noisy circle of friends keeps the floor alive and happy. However, when you cross them, you may end up hurt. Some of them could make fun of you and bully you for no reason. But don’t worry, most of them are just loud and noisy but not mean
4. The Smokers and The Vapers aka Chimneys

Chimneys are the chain smokers who spend their breaks in the smoking area. They vent out and release their stress through inhaling nicotine. Sometimes they smell horrid when they hit the floor because they have been baking in smoke in the smoking lounge. 
Chimneys like to hang out and share stories outside the floor because they feel that the “fresh” air outside is much more comforting than staying inside. They can run, smoke, and run back upstairs again in no time on their very short fifteen-minute breaks. During, they spend half of their time smoking as well. 
Some of the Chimneys don’t really smoke. Some of them vape. While others are just nonsmokers but hang out with their friends who do smoke.
5. The Fashionistas

Fashionistas are those agents who dress to impress when they go to work. They take time and effort to look good and smell good. They usually wear glam make-up and pretty clothes to work. On the other hand, men who are fashionistas wear nice kicks to the office. They spice up their workdays by wearing cute outfits. It’s a lovely way for them to de-stress and unwind at work. 
This sort of agent also loves the spotlight at work. They usually have the cool stuff. They have the latest phones and shop a lot on paydays. They need their salaries to finance their wardrobe needs.
6. The Seller

Sellers are the lifesavers of the floor. They sell all sorts of things. For offices that allow food on the production floor, the sellers would usually pack lunch or snacks to sell. Sometimes, they make more money from selling than what they get paid for doing calls. 
Some sellers don’t sell food. They may sell perfumes, underwear, clothes, even kitchenware, and furniture. They can have brochures of Avon, Natasha, MSE, and so much more with them. On paydays, they rake a lot of money, and they usually stalk you at the ATM, demanding to be paid on what you owed them in the previous days.
7. The TL’s pet

The TL’s pet, otherwise known as the right hand of the TL is someone who follows their team leader around. TLs love them, but some of their teammates hate them. They can be called sipsip or suck-ups by their colleagues for being too close to their bosses. They are the people TLs trust with checking the team’s metrics and whatnot. 
The TL’s pets are usually agents who perform well. Team managers like them a lot because they are easy to coach and deal with. Higher ops love them, too, because they are assets to the account.
Although many may get envious of them and bad-mouth them, TL pets are still the star of the show because they are the ones who typically get promoted.
8. The Jet Setter

Jet setters are those agents who love traveling. They are #travelgoals. All their leaves have already been pre-plotted for vacations. If they do go absent stating that they are sick, chances are they are on a beach somewhere, getting baked by the sun.
Jet setters typically work really hard. They need those commissions and extra pay to fund their travel dreams.
9. The Always Sick

The Always Sick agent has an excuse for everything. They will typically call your TL to advise them that they are sick, their kid is sick, their dog is sick, and whatnot. They always have a medical certificate for everything and anything. They go to the clinic a lot during their shift.
This agent may have a health issue; however, they are not fit to work in the graveyard shift or a hectic call center account.
10. The Problematic One

The problematic agent is the agent who is so hard to coach. Whatever their TL tells them, theyjust never listen. He is always late, doesn’t hit the metrics, and COMPLAINS A LOT. He screams at customers from time to time. He hates his teammates, QAs, the training team, and everyone else. He seems to be drunk after shift most times. He only likes to work on paydays. 
Problematic agents have issues with their attendance too. They can just not show up and they are never reliable.
11. The Borrower

The Borrower is the type of agent who always borrows money. They seem to be broke all the time. They are charming and kind when asking for help. But when it comes to asking them to pay you back, you will hear a lot of excuses from them.
Borrowers lurk around people who seem to have lots of money. They seem to be like emotional vampires who suck not only your money but also your energy.
12. The Office Flirt

The Office Flirt is the guy or girl who wants to date anyone and everyone in the office. They usually use their charms to get their way around. They like flirting with newbies. They also like flirting with bosses. They can be seen dating one poor soul to another on the floor. They can flirt with ANYONE, single or taken, it doesn’t matter.
13. The Hopper

The Hopper or the notorious call center jumper is the agent who ditches work when things get challenging. They always have a resume ready, and sometimes you can catch them drafting their resignation letter right on their office PC. They see working in the office as a pastime or something just to make money, and if things don’t work out, they just bolt and leave. 
Unfortunately, even if they try to hide in their resumes that they have hopped here and there, recruiters still catch them and kick them out from the get-go. The information on their CVs is just too flaky, and their call center gallivanting is found out.
So Much More
Of course you’ll meet so many more types of people in the BPO industry. It’s like Russian roulette, you never know who you’ll knock into.Just remember to be nice to everyone and prioritize work. You will make friends and enemies, but remember that you are there to work first and foremost.

And because many of these BPOs handle offshore clients or companies located abroad, they provide high salaries. Aside from the high wages, there are other incredible benefits. The salary offered by most call centers is higher than what you would get in working for a local company. Salary ranges from 17,000php to about 40,000php. On top of the basic salary, there are also non-taxable allowances. This may include night differential pay which is the additional payment you get when you work between 10 pm to 6 am.
Other allowances you may get would be clothing, rice, transportation, internet, and many more. You may also get bonuses when you hit quotas and perform well.
A higher salary will allow you to help your family. It will also enable you to fulfill your dreams. You can fund your travels through this job. You can afford to hang out in coffee shops and buy those expensive fraps. You can now afford to pay for your brother or sister’s tuition or help you, mom or dad, with their maintenance meds.
2. Growth

There is growth in working for a call center. You can get promoted in as early as six months if you perform well. You can get a higher position as an SME (subject matter expert), team leader or manager, quality assurance analyst, real-time analyst or trainer. You can even go higher than that and get promoted as a senior team leader or an operations manager.
You can get positions outside of the operations, such as moving to recruitment and HR or IT. If you work well and hit the metrics required of you, your supervisor or TL can endorse you for that promotion.
3. Make New Friends

There are many unique, bubbly, and fun people you can be friends with as you work in a call center. You will meet people who have various interests, and they can click with you. Many different individuals will surround you for several hours, and you will share your thoughts and feelings, and you will bond with them.
People who have worked together in a call center usually form a bond for life. The friends you will make there will share with you the highs and the lows of your day-to-day work.
There will also be fun activities like team building and company parties to enjoy with teammates. You can also have virtual hangouts if you work at home. Team lunches and post-shift drinking or eating sessions are common ways to unwind and hang out.
4. Health Cards

Having health insurance is a big deal. It allows you to get checkups without paying for them. Most BPOs offer HMOs to their employees. Some even extend this coverage to your family members, spouse or children.
We have heard of many cases where an employee got sick and did not pay for a thing because they had coverage. If you spend for such hospitalization, it would cost you thousands right out of your pocket.
5. Equal Opportunity

Many Filipinos, due to poverty, were not fortunate enough to reach college. Typically, there are fewer chances for people who do not have a college diploma in the past. But with BPOs landing
our shores, doors opened for those who may only have finished high school or are college undergraduates. Getting a job at a BPO, even if you are only a high school graduate, will allow you to earn more money than those with the same educational attainment who work in other jobs.
The job market is pretty saturated, but BPOs continuously hire people, which means there is much opportunity for everyone to apply. Even people with disabilities or the elderly can work in a call center.

Call center management teams usually think of fun activities because they know that happy workers are productive workers. Take dress-up days or theme days, for example. Have you ever heard of a company that allows its employees to go to the office dressed up for a pajama party? Summer outings are fun events where the account goes to a resort, and people can go swimming and have games.
The fun vibe in a call center and the energy can motivate you to love your work. 
Still, Having Doubts?
You may have heard those people belittling call center workers. You may have heard people from the older generation saying, “Sayang ka, sa call center ka lang nag wowork. (It’s a waste that you only work in a call center.)”. But don’t let these negative words deter you.Working for a callcenter is a decent job with high pay. Just like personal values, work values have to do with your preferences, purpose, and desired path. It is important to consider these values as you explore your current job satisfaction level and think about future career development. If you feel like you must compromise your morals in order to keep your job, that's a huge red flag. Have you ever felt pressured to manipulate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to receive better performance incentives? When you find yourself consistently operating in those gray areas, it could be a sign that it’s time to quit your job.

Staying in a job where you aren’t pushing yourself to learn new skills can leave you feeling like you are approaching a dead-end. It is one thing to love what you do and do it well, but if you’re only doing the bare minimum, it might be time to quit your job and find a more fulfilling role. Staying in this type of situation might limit your growth potential and also lead to feelings of resentment. This is especially true if your manager or other senior leaders have turned down your requests for opportunities to grow for yourself.
There is no room for advancement.

Your manager should be helping you advance professionally. If they’re not, that can be a sign of a lack of opportunity for advancement. If you’re unable to qualify for promotions at a large company, consider looking for something else. And that goes for new businesses as well. Small companies often lack established career paths. But it’s a problem if management is unwilling to discuss how your role may change as the team expands. Even in an ambiguous startup environment, there needs to be a plan for career development. If you're wondering whether you have stayed at your company for too long, it might be time to leave it.
Your pay doesn’t reflect your responsibilities and performance.

If your company is unable or unwilling to pay you fairly for the work you’re doing, you might consider finding another job. While you should be receiving regular cost-of-living raises at a minimum, your compensation should also reflect your responsibilities and performance. Being undercompensated can signify a disconnect between how you and the company view your value and growth potential. And staying in this situation will lead to frustration and resentment over time. Keep in mind that there are other companies out there that will pay you what you’re worth.

PASSION OR PRACTICALITY?

When you grow up, what do you want to be?
Suddenly, you’re 18 years old. Officially an adult now. You’re a senior in high school, and you are about to be asked that same question a lot of times, which was so fun and easy to answer when you were a kid. However, practicality has conditioned you, as time passes by, to think carefully before responding to what you truly want to be when you grow up. Because this time, the expectations are a little bit different.

This time, your answer comes with a fat paycheck, and you better know what your projected yearly salary is going to be. This time, you better know how many years it will take you to pay off your student loans, and it better be in a timely fashion. This time, you better have a detailed plan for the rest of your life, and that involves being able to facilitate at least two kids and a picturesque lake house. This time, you better be practical.
The career path you’re taking…
Over the years, you find yourself struggling with the inner battle of passion vs. practicality. When you enrolled in a well-known State University, it was for one and only one reason: to become a writer. And you didn’t fail to become one. You graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing. However, being an artist isn’t easy. It takes a lot of courage to pursue this one for you to survive your everyday life. They say passion is for those people who are privileged enough. Because when you’re an artist, you don’t actually care about your salary. You won’t think twice about giving your all as long as you give others the satisfaction of your artwork.

And suddenly, you realize that practicality is a must too. Yes, you’re passionate. There’s no doubt about that. But, how can you pursue your passion if your stomach is aching because of hunger? How can you pay your bills with your passion? Whether we like it or not, sooner or later, we’ll find ourselves pursuing a career that can make us survive our everyday lives.
Life is not all about rainbows and butterflies. We don’t always get what we want. We may find ourselves in the BPO industry with a competitive salary, a lot of benefits and incentives, and much more. We’ll realize that we may not find ourselves pursuing the career we are always talking about, but it can make our lives better as it is. Sometimes, being practical is the best choice. Maybe, sooner or later, we’ll find ourselves loving the practicality of life. We’ll realize that in the middle of the path we’re taking, we find ourselves embracing what's on our table right now.
