*Sighs deeply in Tired* Even without the novella that's 100% going to provide him with a much-deserved soulmate, Matthew already has an immensely happy ending. He's sober now. He's gentler with himself. He he gets to be free and travel. He mended his familial relationships. He gets to be closer with his friends and bridge the gap that his secret created. Romantic love isn't the only happy route. In fact, it would have been disingenuous to Matthew's arc.

Can’t believe I haven’t mentioned this before but I have big big feelings about women and mothers within the Legendborn cycle.
Every woman that The Order touches is hit by some sort of tragedy. It’s part of the point. They’re not Supposed to be there, let alone in power.
“Nick’s mother, Sel’s, mine. How many mothers has the Order taken?”
Even Cestra as a Regent is outnumbered as one out of three. If you count the Seneschals it’s one out of 6. She is the token woman in a historically male power system. So historically male that any woman that rose to power in the earlier ages was killed.
The Order of the Rose exists to let women still pretend they have a hand in anything. But even then, they’re there to support chapter events rather than actually have a piece of anything worth something.
All of the trio’s mothers interfered, and they all paid for it. You can say this is just what The Order does to people who threaten their system, but even if you look at Martin - I genuinely think some action would have been taken against him for letting someone take his child without him noticing, if he were the mother.
I seriously doubt the council of regents actually believed Natasia opened the gates. She was absolutely just an easy scapegoat to cover up the actions of the scion of Arthur as a woman and a Merlin. Can’t even get into the way that The Order treats Merlins right now.
This is really long but. I hope the women of the Legendborn series all have some part in tearing shit down. They deserve it

One thing about the Kanes is that once someone become important to them and they trust you, they are loyal and would go to such lenghts to protect them, even doing unprecedented feats in the way. I love how we can see that with both Natasia and Faye and Sel and Bree. There are so many paralles between them and I can't wait to see mother and son reunited.

Me neither. I couldn't find any scene between them with romantic tension. They don't even like each other, they Just have powers than need each other. I really don't get It why people ship them so hard...
my deep dark ta6 confession is that i was never on board with nicolibby, not even from the beginning

we talk abt sel giving up his humanity to save bree but consider:
bree having no more than ten minutes to speak to her mother— the woman whose death motivated the entire first book— and using a few of those minutes to ask about sel’s mother to try and ease his pain and save his humanity——
there’s so much love and care and growth in that act— even aside from bree’s loyalty and care for sel, she’s come so far from the girl consumed by grief, driven by an obsession with her mother’s past.
she couldn’t even connect with her ancestors the first time mariah tried to help her. she was too overwhelmed with thoughts of her mother and their lineage, scared that her mother wouldn’t want to talk to her, scared of facing her mothers death head on.
now, she gives up time with her mother for the chance of helping sel— and herself by proxy. this is a far cry from the bree prepared to sacrifice everything to solve her mother’s “murder.”
and no one should be shocked by the end of bloodmarked.

MEXICAN GOTHIC REREAD + RAMBLES C1-2
the book i’m reading here is mexican gothic by silvia moreno-garcia. it’s one of my favourites, i definitely recommend it to any horror/mushroom fans!! anyway on with the reread. spoilers!! duh!!
CHAPTER ONE
page 5, lines 5-7
“Give me a kiss good night.”
“I’ve got to run, but you can still have a bit of my lipstick,” she replied, taking her cigarette and putting it in his mouth.
this is the first thing that wowed me when i read the book for the first time lmao. this is just so incredibly iconic of noemí. like… oh my god. this is what got me so invested in her as a protagonist
page 6, lines 19-20
She had assumed Father had found out she was out with Hugo and meant to rip him from her arms.
i think this sentence also does a really good job of establishing noemí’s character - it paints hugo as passive and noemí as active, showing how she views herself as more dominant than would be typical for a 1950s mexican socialite.
page 8, lines 17-25
When was the last time Noemí had spoken to Catalina? It must have been months ago, maybe close to a year. The couple had honeymooned in Pachuca, and Catalina had phoned and sent her a couple of postcards, but after that there had been little else, although telegrams had still arrived wishing happy birthday to the members of the family at the appropriate times of the year. There must have also been a Christmas letter, because there had been Christmas presents. Or was it Virgil who had written the Christmas letter? It had, in any case, been a bland missive.
sorry for the huge passage but oh my god this is so fucking creepy on a reread. like, the way marriage just isolates a woman from her family so easily… idk… oh my god it’s so scary to think about this happening to you. like you could be undergoing torment and nobody would know because appearances are being upkept… oh it’s terrifying.
page 9, lines 14-15
“You must understand I would take no pleasure in putting a niece of mine in a place like La Castañeda-“
ah yes! catalina would be sent to an asylum! because that’s where mentally ill women were sent! sorry this just irritates me - mostly i like Mr Taboada (Noemí’s father) but sometimes i remember he’s a 1950s man :(
page 11, lines 7-8
In the smirk and the clever, dark eyes, child and parent greatly resembled each other.
noemí’s relationship with her father fucks me up actually… reminds me of my own with MY father lmao. the parallels consistently drawn between them… i love it when a girl is her father
page 13, lines 35-36
“He is her husband and has a right to make decisions on her behalf.”
MR TABOADA!!! URGH!!!! sorry. i do like how even Noemí’s father who’s meant to be presented as a reasonably sympathetic & forward-thinking character displays obvious, casual misogyny. it’s a great look into the morals of the time and it’s realistic which i like
CHAPTER TWO
page 17, lines 3-6
He was fair-haired and pale—she didn’t realise anyone could be that pale; goodness, did he ever wander into the sun?— his eyes uncertain, his mouth straining to form a smile or a greeting.
FRANCIS INTRO!!! i am so immensely normal about the man, as i’m sure you can tell. also this bit is hilarious to me because like. noemí… this is gonna be ur husband by the end of the book. i love them. they’re legitimately one of my favourite book couples i’m in love with them both
page 18, lines 24-25
…he said, gripping the wheel with both hands with strength she would not have imagined from his limp handshake.
i’m looking respectfully. ok ignore my giggles but this is legitimately a really good early example of francis being strong/powerful and choosing not to use that power to hurt noemí. am i reading into it too much? perhaps!
page 18, lines 34-36
“Is… is your English any good?”
“Lessons every day since I was six,” she said, switching from Spanish to English. “I’m sure I’ll have no trouble.”
THRASH HIM NOEMÍ!!!!!
page 20, lines 12-15
Her mother would have said he needed iron in his diet and a good cut of meat. By the looks of those thin fingers he sustained himself on dewdrops and honey, and his tone tended towards whispers.
i love it when noemí describes just how utterly ugly francis is in the most fascinated tone. she wants to STUDY this man
page 20, line 23
“It’s like driving in a bowl of milk.”
i’m mystified by what this means please help
page 20, lines 27-28
and the house seemed to leap out of the mist to greet them with eager arms. It was so odd!
FORESHADOWING!!!!! THE HOUSE WANTS YOU NOEMÍ!!! also i think it’s so funny how she needs an exclamation mark just to say how fucking weird this place is
pages 20-21, lines 34-3
It might have been foreboding, evoking images of ghosts and haunted places, if it had not seemed so tired, slats missing from a couple of shutters, the ebony porch groaning as they made their way up the steps to the door…
noemí refuses to be scared by the very scary house because of what shit condition it’s in. iconic behaviour, in my opinion. in an alternate universe she goes in there with a duster and the mushrooms don’t stand a chance
page 21, lines 33-35
“Noemí… offered her hand to the woman, who looked at it as if she were holding up a piece of week-old fish.”
LOVE that this is florence’s intro. florence doyle is my problematic fave tbh. but i love nearly every character in this except for virgil. is she refusing noemí’s hand because she’s not myceliated, because she’s not white, because she’s a person and florence generally hates those? WHO KNOWS! not me!
page 22, lines 21-22
“Do not wander away from the house on your own; it is easy to get lost and the region is puckered with ravines.”
no words. no words at all. florence. florence you cheeky. no words. YEAH I BET YOU’D KNOW ALL ABOUT RAVINES
page 23, lines 16-17
“I hope you brought a sweater.”
“I have a rebozo.”
blah blah blah noemí having a mexican alternative to florence’s english way of doing things blah blah blah

I don't know....how Bree knew Nick invoked the same feeling of safeness in Sel as he did in her... how when Nick saw Sel in the blood walk he reached for him... how they clasped each other's necks, foreheads touching, breathing in the same air... how they had been fighting so long they forgot how they grew up together and trained together and how it felt t be together... how what brought Nick out of hiding was the feeling of his Oath, thinking Sel had died... how amazing their connection is even though we as readers are seeing their relationship at the worst it's ever been

I vote for Matthew and Eugenia because Make Matthew and Thomas and Charlotte and Gideon in-laws is a win-win!
Saga of finding out Matthew's endgame love interest🔎 join the investigation!
Volume Ⅰ
➤Esme Hardcastle
I'm starting with chronological order. We know that she used to have a crush on Matthew during the "Academy era".
Nothing but shadows:
Matthew's friendship made other friends creep forward, too. Esme cornered James and told him how sorry she was that Mike was being an idiot. She also told him that she hoped James did not take this expression of friendly concern in a romantic way.
"I have rather a tendresse for Matthew Fairchild, actually," Esme added. "Please put in a good word for me there."
Unfortunately, we haven't seen any of her interactions with Matthew during TLH🤷🏼‍♀️ But who knows, maybe after he returns to London we'll get something?👀 Personally, I found this idea pretty interesting, Esme seems like an adorable and confident girl✨
Volume Ⅱ
➤Eugenia Lightwood
Listen, listen. First of all I should mention what @roseofthomas validly pointed out: Matthew is officially 17 in the beginning of Chain of Gold and Eugenia is 21. And I also would be against anything romantic between them if it stayed this way. But TLH plot covers an entire year. So in Chot epilogue Matthew is already 18. And he leaves London for at least one year. So when he comes back he's 19. So what we got is ~ 19/23. Which is not a huge gap and Matthew will be an adult. Everyone remembers Malec's age gap? Diana & Gwyn? Yeah...So everything I'm talking about below I say in the context of Matthew being 19. Deal?🌱🌿Deal🌸🪷
I reread every part where she's mentioned. And I can confirm that we didn't get any info on how Matthew sees Eugenia except "she's a good girl". We know that she's not exactly a part of "the gang", at least before Chain of Thorns. She had her own group with Catherine, Ari and Rosamund and Barbara. So it's unlikely that Matthew sees her as some older cousin like James does.
Interactions:
1. Thomas’s sister Eugenia had danced with Matthew, tossing her long dark hair.
2. It was Eugenia, who had come up to them, her yellow cap askew on her dark hair. “Never mind. I am not interested in your dull friends. Matthew, will you dance with me?” “Eugenia.” Matthew looked at her with a weary affection. “I am not in a dancing mood.” “Matthew.” Eugenia looked woebegone. “Piers keeps stepping on my feet, and Augustus is lurking about as if he wants a waltz, which I just can’t manage. One dance,” she wheedled. “You’re an excellent dancer, and I’d like to have a bit of fun.” Matthew looked long-suffering but allowed Eugenia to lead him out onto the floor.
✨Parallels✨
1) Eugenia was kinda "dating" Augustus Pounceby, who actually loved Catherine but still gave Eugenia an idea that they can work. Apparently he saw her as an "if I can't get Catherine, I can at least have Eugenia"
VS
Matthew was kinda "dating" Cordelia, who actually loved James but still gave Matthew hope for her affection. Apparently for Daisy it was "if I can't have James, I can at least be with him"
2) Eugenia leaves London after Augustus proposes to Catherine. She feels humiliated and wants to be away from Enclave to get some peace.
VS
Matthew leaves London after Cordelia breaks up with him and comes back to James. He wants to heal and doesn't really want to be around Jordelia for some time, cause he's still getting over Daisy.
3) Eugenia returns to London after a few months and acts pretty confidently. It's implying that she healed mentally in Idris and is ready to be back in action. She's slowly becoming a part of the gang but it still looks like she spends more time by herself.
VS
I believe that Matthew eventually returns after a year or so and I expect him to act pretty much the same. Like he feels healed, has more confidence in himself and is fine with being around kissing Jordelia. But he still feels a bit lonely (my theory)
--------------------------------------
My bestie @afloralrib mentioned that their relationship has "Penelope & Colin" vibes and has some valid parallels WHICH IS TRUE
--------------------------------------
Volume Ⅲ
➤Claude Kellington
Exes, exes...like yeah BUT CASSIE said "no obvious love interest". And I believe that ex is someone who immediately comes to mind, so idk....and he broke his heart🥺. Still possible tho~
Volume Ⅳ
I remember someone mentioned Matthew/Grace but...I really don't think that it can work between them, even though he forgave her. So we'll just have to wait and see🌿🌱
𓇬Epilogue𓇬
That's it, my researchers. Thank you for joining me in this pointless adventure 🫶 cause Cassie will probably say that his true love is Claribella and leave it be💅🏻

Yes! He was always touching her in a subtle way during Bloodmarked. Grabing her wrist when Erebus and the Regents were being bitches in the begining, wiping her tears and taking her hand when they were talking after he put her insides toghether and after she exploded in Volition and runing his hands up and down her lega while they were runing from Erebus after Nick ruined away. And I didn't even need to talk about the firefly scene.
I had this Legendborn/Bloodmarked thought that upset me and I’d like to share
Been thinking about Sel admiring, yet quietly being jealous of the casual affection and quiet love people show each other in small gestures. He’d see it from afar. How couples/people who loved each other would entwine or press arms together in physical contact, smoothing back their friend’s hair as it blows in the wind, sharing warmth huddled in the cold together and wiping a crumb off their partner’s face after a meal. But then Sel would catch himself staring and look away quickly, thinking to himself how it must be to share such casual affection. The lack of words but the reassurance that somebody cared, all within those small actions.
And Sel never had nor shared nor been given those small acts of physical love. His touch was always taught to be in acts of casual violence, in the threat of what he could do with the power coiled up inside him. And from such a young age too, he grew to understand his own touch as something to be given out of punishment or rage.
And seeing Bree he’d wistfully think of the casual affection he wanted to show her. He wanted to wrap a coil of her hair around his finger just to examine it in the afternoon light, warm her cold hands with his breathe, cradle her face and hold her tightly just because he could. And he’d catch himself physically clenching his fist, restraining himself from reaching for her at times.
Sel was seeing himself for the first time in so long, not as an instrument of magic and power in a centuries-old conflict of legend, but simply a boy made to hold the girl he loves.
TLDR: Sel’s love language truly is physical touch

The energy team Conrad puts in trying to make Jeremiah a villain who didn't deserved Belly is so tiring. Only this week I saw people saying that Jeremiah was like Adam, who cheated on his sick wife, because he hooked up with another girl when he and Belly broke up and is honestly ridicolous. Say what you want to say, but the fight between Jere and Belly left Very clear they were broken up.
They make Conrad amazing because he "worked on not being his dad" but forget that Conrad was always Adam's favorite and Adam was always harsh and neglectful of Jeremiah who always tried to get his dad's affection and was like this with Susannah too and we read in his POV that he isn't this bitter, jealous brother than team Conrad try so har to portrait him as, but he looked up to Conrad until he started to treat Belly like trash.
Jeremiah was the one who suffered the most because of Belly's mess and indecision. Jenny had to do everything to destroy his character to make Belly and Conrad getting toghether after she dated Jere for years, went after him to college and accept his proposal. Because in any other circunstances Belly and Conrad would look Just selfish and toxic people.

Kane Coded
@multifairyus for you love!! I would’ve done more but I think more would have ruined the story. Without further delay, please enjoy my Kane Coded Story❤️❤️
Tumblr media
“So, Kingsmage. How long has it been since you’ve played?” Valec’s voice had all the charm and charisma in it. He was enjoying this. Selwyns’ nervousness, his clammy hands, and the slightly less sure of where his hands should go on the violin.
“I don’t have time for your taunts Valechaz…”
“Sure ya do, it’s my bar—“
“It’s Dame Lucille’s.”
“Regardless, you go on when I let you~”
Valec placed two shots on the table, and Selwyn clenched his jaw and looked away. Offended. He trusted Valechaz, enough he should know better.
“I don’t drink.”
“Not even your beloved Bree and Nicks’ aether?” Selwyn looked at the shots, and the smell hit him. Nick’s summer grass and cedar wood hit him first. Bree hit him harder. She always smelled like power, with enough sweetness to make Selwyn tipsy off of her. Nick always smelled like home, and these days he was home. Bree was power, and everything he thought he couldn’t have. Her sweetness balanced him. She made him better without trying.
“You know I wouldn’t give you anything you don’t like little brother.” Valechaz grinned at him and pushed the shot glasses closer to him. Only for a moment did Selwyn hesitate, and then the aether was gone. His gold eyes looked slightly off center, and his heartbeat was slightly faster.
Selwyn was still in control, the taste of their aether burned his throat. He loved it, the feeling of them clouding his senses. He relished being surrounded by their scent. His heartbeat was faster. It thrummed in his ears, and in his fingertips.
With a new found confidence, Selwyn grasped the neck of his violin.
“There’s the Selwyn Kane I know.” He closed his eyes, and pictures Nick and Bree. They’re the only ones that matter. Who will ever matter to him, his heaven away from this shitty world he fights for. The power to keep pushing, his motivation to come home after every mission.
Valec takes Selwyn center stage, and the show begins. His fingers begin to dance across the strings. A slow movement first, slowly building up. Every note is a small confession, straight from his heart. Then a call to their hearts, from the buildup.
Boom!
The crescendo hits. Fast and precise. Never missing a beat, or a note. The song is for Nick and Bree. He was never good with words, so maybe his violin could express what he can’t.
His heart took over, and played for them. It was only him, Bree and Nick. No one else mattered. Not the stares he got from staff or patrons, just them. In this moment where time stopped and he played his heart out for his loved ones.
His eyes were closed. He wanted his heart to speak for itself. The song slowed down. The decrescendo fully admitting his feelings for them until he could play nothing else.
The song was over.
Selwyn opened his eyes and met theirs. Nick first, then Bree. Nick had a light blush on his cheeks. His eyes looked through him and into his soul. There’s nothing he could hide, and even less that Nick couldn’t see. Bree had almost come to tears, with a small smile on her face. She looked ready to kiss him on stage. The applause echoed in his ears and he walked off stage.
When he returned back to his waiting room, Valechaz was sitting on the sofa smirking at him. “Well done, kingsmage.” Bree and Nick came in soon after and Valechaz left with a grin on his face. Selwyn was ambushed by both of them. A kiss on both cheeks, and crushed in a hug.
“You were incredible.”
“Truly magnificent.”
On and on they showered him with praise, and wrapped in their arms, Selwyn could only accept it. He wanted to melt, cry, and kiss them back. But also wanted to feel their love, for just a little while longer.

We don't talk enough about Matthew and Cordelia platonic relationship and Cordelia's grief because they lost that at the epilogue.
They were great friends and they understood each other. They found comfort in each other and shared Secrets and helped each other to forget.
Taking the epilogue and the fact we will probably have Matthew's novellas, I totally believe they Will get to have that closeness back. Cordelia already started to feel the barrier between them crumbles and Matthew did needed time to get over his romantic feelings for her. Matthew, Cordelia and James Will have a beautiful life with Matthew being close to both of them.
