An Analysis of the Nature of Luffy and Sanji’s Relationship
Whoa, this is my first text post. It’s a very long post, too. I don’t recommend reading if you don’t like long posts.
Intro:
Prior to the release of chapter 856, the relationship between Luffy and Sanji’s relationship had always seemed to be ambiguous in nature. Granted, it was an intricate relationship that had experienced gradual, rich development over the course of the manga. However, I was never able to identify the fundamental characteristic of their relationship. This was always frustrating to me; the majority of Straw Hat/Luffy relationships could be characterized by one principal trait. For example, Luffy is the one in whom Robin can place her unadulterated trust. Luffy is the one ho will accept Chopper as he is, regardless of his eccentricities. I racked my brains fruitlessly for a continuation of this (doubtlessly intentional) pattern in Sanji. It was only until chapter 856 that I gained a more thorough, consistent and concise understanding of the interactions between Luffy and Sanji. I’ve decided to share my interpretation with you guys, since the relationship between these two is (in my opinion) a tad underrated. Beware: my writing gradually deteriorates in quality. (I was getting tired, okay?)

"And I think for that reason I find fan fiction especially a really interesting and really rich mode of expression that, of course, a lot of people look down on 'cause it's - you know, it lacks a certain literary polish. But I respect that about fan fiction. Like, I respect that fan fiction is so much the product of a compulsion, of a yearning, that it almost forgoes all of these pretensions of polish, of quality, of sophistication. And in that sense, for me, there is something that's revealed at the heart of fan fiction that I think is essential to all great literature, which is this desire to put yourself in the same space as the transcendental, you know, to almost touch the hem of it without really quite grasping it."

its sooo devastating how the survivors of robert’s rebellion that we meet are all, at least in some ways, stuck at the age they were during the war. ned thinks of both lyanna and seeing the dead bodies of elia/aegon/rhaenys in the throne room constantly and it impacts so many of his decisions. cersei’s behavior— catty rivalries with teenage girls, whining at tyrion all through acok to make tywin come back to KL, etc— is more like that of a sixteen year old than a 32 year old. catelyn’s been pissed about ned bringing jon home for literally fourteen whole years at the start of the story. even lysa tully is still pining after petyr like a teenage girl in love despite barely seeing him for a decade and a half… tfw you will never get over the things that happened to you when you were seventeen

And if it frightens and torments you to think of childhood and of the simplicity and silence that accompanies it, because you can no longer believe in God, who appears in it everywhere, when ask yourself, dear Mr. Kappus, whether you have really lost God. Isn’t it much truer to say that you have never yet possessed him?

This is an issue that needs to be discussed much more often; the way people minimize Jon's abuse is disconcerting. Like much of the issues within this fandom, it goes back to the persistent double-standard that is so prevalent.
The worst thing is that Jon's abuse and Catelyn's treatment of him is nothing but obvious - there is no ignoring or missing it. People choose to minimize and play blind with it. The woman literally told him he should be in Bran's place, who was at the verge of death at the time, later ending up crippled. One does not have to struggle to imagine the pain this must've caused on a 14 year old boy. To then turn around and ignore it, all while victimizing and being the utmost beacons of sympathy and empathy for other characters, some of whom are sufering from similar or lesser treatment/abuse, is extremely strange and just speaks of the moral incongruence that stains this fandom.
Typical fandom nonsense when justifying Catelyn’s emotional abuse of Jon Snow
Tumblr media
This standard is only applied to Jon Snow. Cersei was murdering bastards! How dare whiny, thin-skinned, over sensitive Jon Snow complain about the emotional abuse he experienced growing up as a child - at least he did not get murdered!!
Also Catelyn being a better person than Cersei is setting the bar very low indeed.
All our other main character POVs are also nobles who have it much, much better than the small folk or in many cases their counterparts. And yet the same readers who love to play oppression Olympics when it comes to some characters - even going so far as to write that Sansa was traumatized by Ned’s ‘favoritism’ towards Arya and that Ned Stark abused and groomed Sansa -  will be over here shrugging off the deliberate and forced social ostracization a small child experienced growing up and seeing his half-siblings get the love and attention denied to him.
Hell, Sansa playing a pretend bastard in the Vale gets more sympathy in this fandom than the actual bastard’s thoughts and feelings on this. How dare Harry the Heir treat Sansa like a bastard, she was so hurt! But look isn’t Sansa so kind, gentle and polite in treating Jon Snow as a bastard 🥰 🥰?
